Minesweeper only kind of works for me. I have to refresh after every click in order to get the numbers to appear, but I think that it's just incompatible with IE running on Windows 7.

I probably missed something, but WHY IS EVERYBODY'S AVATAR THE SAME??

Seriously, I can't tell Somebody from Reier from anyone else.

Minesweeper is broken, which sucks because it's really the only game there that I'm any good at :(

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Least favorite robot!
« on: March 27, 2010, 04:00:36 PM »
Tough as Nails is my favourite bot of all time, guys. It was designed elegantly and beautifully to take advantage of its surroundings in order to win. Plus, it was great to see a team with actual creativity for once, not "aw, well Chaos 2 won a while ago, so let's just build some flipper." Seriously, once Chaos 2 got it's first win, basically EVERY ROBOT WAS A DAMN WEDGE OR A FLIPPER. Wheely Big Cheese and Gravity were sweet, but every other flipper in Robot Wars drove me off-the-wall nuts.

I also really liked 13 Black too.

As for bots I really disliked, I did not like Chaos 2 at all, or Tornado, or Pussycat for that matter. I also didn't like Biohazard because it was really boring to watch, and I didn't like Hazard either. Although Hazard was at least exciting, it beat up Complete Control, which I wasn't too happy about.

Instead of holding a pointless tourney, in which basically anyone with a brain will enter an SnS with FBS.py, why not just ask for two teams for Nar v2.3? After all, how is it even a real and competitive tourney if a) there can only be extremely little variation in bot types at absolute most, b) you basically will end up telling us how to mold the bots to fit what you deem to be acceptable, or c) the whole point isn't to even have a tourney but just as a ploy to make us build for you?

You would save a heck of a lot of time and effort on everybody's part if you just said "hey guys, I need a team of rammers, and SnS with static weapons. Build and send your bots!"

And if you're going to host a tourney, at least allow for some variation. It's much more fun for everybody if you have no idea what the competition is going to be like.

A valid point, Shish-kabot, but you're forgetting one little fact.

RA2 =/= Real Life.

Jugglers, popups, glitches, and the like all don't work too well in the real world the last time I checked. Also, more spikes =/= more damage in real life either. RA2 physics are much different than IRL physics.

So, while you're right when talking about real-world bots, we're not talking about the real world here at all. We can do different things in RA2, and as such, we categorize diffferently.

There are cobwebs in this thread :O

I don't want to be pushy, but the last post here was 17 days ago, and we've had nothing since the splash was posted back in February. Is this even going to get started?

So, S32 is fighting his ass off for you, condemning Stagfish for bashing you, and then you turn around and pull something like that. Seriously, you wonder why people find you annoying and immature... well, what you just did is why...

And I was about to comment on how much progress you've made as a builder, too. Your last bots were really showing significant improvement. But that really was not cool.

Copy/pasting the AI folder into DSL 2.1 seems to work fine. I guess that I'll go with that then.

I have honestly had enough of this... This tournament cannot end fast enough for me  :ermm:

Joe, remember this: Everybody not BAWWWWing right now really, really appreciates the immense amount of work that you've done for the community, myself included. CC is one of my favourite tourneys, so keep up the beyond-excellent work that you're doing.

Also, you are not obliged to even reply to any of Avalanche's posts. If HE did not put in the effort to AI his own bot, and had you do it for him, only creating more effort for yourself, he has no right to complain. Beggars can't be choosers. We had this argument before way back when on the old forums during ianh05's Tag Team Challenge Tourney, and we came to the same conclusion then: If you do not AI your own bot and trust the host to do it for you, you have no right to complain.

Yeah... not the best idea at all IMO. I thought (along with most of the community I'm sure) that the purpose of Nar AI was to create the Starcore pack of DSL. You haven't changed neraly enough of how the game feels for it to be a new mod, and with the altered .txt's, it's not compatible with DSL 2.1, which BBEANS will be in. I can't test my robots against any of your superior designs, because none of the components will act the same. It's a completely useless pack with the changed .txt's.

EDIT: I guess I can try to rip the AI out of your pack and put them into my DSL so I can do my testing there, but still, modded components weren't your best idea.

This might help :P

Ah I see... I had the snapper on the baseplate with the attachment point facing up. I think I could make one that way, but I'll have to see when I get back home.

In other news, I'm currently in Prague in the Czech Republic. I bought a soviet red army helmet :D

Well, i was just trying to distinguis between an FBS and a SNS. Now that I see the general consensus for FBS is a bot where the chassis moves, but the bot stays still, why is it call FBS.py?

To be honest, I have no idea. It should be SnS.py if you ask me...

I'm guessing that this is as good a time as any to jump back in to this debate.

Anyways, I never said that I did not agree with categorizing. Should there be taxonomic ranking for bot types? Of course there should be. I never said that distinctions were not there in certain sub-categories. You know as well as I do, Sage, that I could not look you in the eye and tell you that a chained HS is the same as a HS. They're not. But, what you guys are doing is looking for distinctions that simply are not there. And since biology seems to be a popular analogy here, allow me to take a stab at it.

For simplicity's sake, let's say that Stock robots are elephants, and there are two main bot types: HS (Asian elephants) and Gut-Rippers (African elephants). Let's focus on the African elephant branch. Here, we have certain sub-categories - let's call popups Bush Elephants and jugglers Forest Elephants. Right now, everybody is happy. I'm happy, because all different types of elephants grouped according to their species and sub-species, and you guys are happy because you have your nice taxonomic rank.

This next part is where we are right now. A scientist (let's call him Dr. Ray Ran) suggests that there is a third sub-species of African elephant (let's say this is a "true" popup). It is exactly the same as the Bush Elephant, except for where it lives (North Africa vs. South Africa). This hypothesis has not been accepted by the scientific community, as it has been determined that the Northern Elephant is not different enough to be considered a seperate species (this part is not an analogy - as far as I can remember, biologists have had this debate).

My point is this: you can make taxonomic rankings, but even the science you have cited to support your claims has had this same discussion and come to my conclusion. There are certain distinctions that just are not there, or are not prominent or important enough to deserve a seperate family (eg: SnS and MBSnS). Just stick to the major differences (Chained and Regular HS are different enough. So are HS and "slow" HS). Focusing on everything minor is just a waste of your time and energy.

I never said you were emo. I said that your robot will be less durable than my grandmother's china collection :P

Your weapons have a total of 3000 hp. By comparison, Sparkey's bot has 8000 hp of weaponry, and it is the next weakest. Long story short, even Sparkey wil out-gun you >.<

I can see how you mounted the weapons, but I'm not sure about how you did the wheels. Very nicely done, although mabye there are other things that you could do with 40+ kg instead of the ramplates (castor armour perhaps?).

Sage, your bot makes my eyeballs hurt D: Great design, but I don't want to have to close my eyes every time I visit GTM's :P

I voted for #2. It was probably my favourite design (Core Drill was a close second) but the "that's a tree" part really sold me. If I have to see it every time I come to GTM's for a month, it would make my day every time. (And no, I didn't make it)

EDIT: Holy Swiss cheese, Batman! It has a R0B0 Smiley too :D

Site News and Feedback / Re: Idea
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:25:17 AM »
I tend to agree with the basic gist of the idea (being too many crappy tourneys). There was a time that I entered absolutely every single tourney because I could keep up. Now, without an army of pre-made bots at your disposal, it's damn near impossible. Hell, I hardly even read the signups section because of all of the junk. I'm not sure what we could do though without destroying the chances of people like JB running the CC series only ~3 months into their tenure at GTM's. Mind you, if my memory serves, CC1 wasn't a huge tourney, but it gained buzz because it was so well run.
