Other Tutorials / How to fix a .bot file with a bad custom skin
« on: October 21, 2017, 01:33:45 PM »
A spectre is haunting GTM, earning the ire of many a frustrated builder who have ended up with a broken .bot file after attempting to apply a custom skin.

Here's a quick guide on how to remove a broken skin from your bot. All info taken from https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?page=page2187 and https://gametechmods.com/forums/tutorials-and-tips/guide-to-the-bot-file-(re-up)/

To explain why skins can crash the game, RA2 bots only accept custom textures in 24-bit .bmp format. Furthermore, the image must be square with sides equal to a power of 2, which means something like 256x256, 512x512, 128x128, or 1024x1024. Any other format or size will either look distorted or just break your bot.

You will need Notepad++ to edit your .bot file, available for free on its website.

1) Find your broken .bot file in the Robot Designs or Teams folder and open with Notepad++. As always, right-click on the field in the bottom right so that it says UNIX. Be sure to make a backup copy of the file just in case you misread one of the steps!

2) Scroll to the very top of the file and click on the first line so the text cursor is placed there. Use Ctrl-F or Command-F to go to the first appearance of the text "RAW". This will take you to the chassis section of the component data and makes sure that your next search is not caught by the wrong result.

3) Leave the text cursor where it is and run the find function again to search for "true". You should be taken to a line with only the text "true" and the next line(s) either being really ugly or just saying "false".

4) If you have the right line, you'll have found the boolean "true" which tells the game to scan for a skin in the line under it, where the skin is encoded really messily and a "false" appears at the end. To remove the skin, just change the "scan for skin" indicator from "true" to "false" and delete all the skin information from the next line. If this is really lengthy and takes up multiple lines, just highlight and delete all of it. One way to highlight multiple lines is by putting the text cursor at the end of the "true"/"false" indicator line, scrolling down until the skin data ends, and pressing Shift+Left Click. After this is done, make sure that the line under the indicator value still has a single text of "false".

5) Save the .bot file and try it out. You should end up with a working bot with the faulty skin now removed. If not, you can try again with the backup you made earlier.

Hope this helps some of you out!

Do you mean how to fill out the weapons tuple for a bot's AI line, like 'weapons':(16,17,18,19)? Easiest way is to download apanx's .bot exporter as it tells you all the components and their corresponding IDs. Or you can go into the file with Notepad++ and count in which order each component was attached with the first attached component being ID 1.

I like the shark, but that don't look like no baby to me. You can probably put the blue snapper up beside the green if you snapper load which lets you shorten the wedge a bit. Use the extra weight and switch to shinies to get better drive or a shallower chassis.

You can probably finish up on the drum with a few adjustments; don't know why the drive isn't upgraded or why there's that extra chassis space at the back. Then switch to all or mostly razors since they're really the only way you'll get that drum width without overloading the motors, or you'll just have Z-teks struggling to power 180+ kg of weapons.

You may find this page (which *I* definitely created back in July 2008) useful: https://wiki.gametechmods.com/index.php?title=Jargon

You can keep one copy of each "AI" folder in the same installation of one RA2 game. Then just rename them as needed so that only the one you want to use is called "AI". If the pack comes with components or arenas, I think those can simply be merged into the same folder.

Great first bot. Try implementing some of the suggestions you've been given; I would add that you can try saving some more weight by mounting the drive motors somewhere coming off the snapper along with the weapons, though if you opt for RAD drive it doesn't really matter. Also see what you can do with some other bot types, which don't really require as much snapper loading or glitching to be effective.

Edit: Didn't realize this was your first post, welcome to the forums!

Was expecting to see more HS, but we've got some cool entries. I like Lightning, Badnik, VB's HS, Pwn, and AS's bots.

Don't know why MNB approved any entries other than 1, 2, or 4, but it's nice to see some good submissions this month.

I could've sworn you've built this bot before, anyway lose the rubbers or some weapons to get more battery, you need at least another Nifty (500+500+100+100 or 312.5+312.5+100+100 by motor drain measure). Then if you still have weight, you can try a blade on the wedge, casters, or an anchor with an ear. Also, try turning around the green snapper and using a 140cm with snapper loading to see if it saves you some weight and extends the wedge a bit more.

The size is not that bad, it just looks compact in the picture. The DDTs both start facing forward and fire upward - actually I put a smartzone that sticks through the bottom of the chassis because the razors will be able to hit below the bot when they glitch out.

Also, I found that the DDTs would not rupt with 400 battery input, but would always work with 500. So maybe 500 is actually required to be "fully powered" even though they drain 312.5.

Another MW popup for another tournament, this time a Rupt glitching true popup. It doesn't quite have the explosive flipping power of your typical rupter, but at least it works! 397.9, 2 blacks, and DSA.

You have to use https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php. http://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php doesn't redirect to the secure site and forces you to log in, at least if it's been bookmarked or copypasted into the URL bar
