I really think it shouldn't be in Stock, just because there are so few design options that actually work in Stock. Plus people have had so much time to optimize their Stock building. I'm in favor of the Retooled idea.
That said, I haven't actually played Retooled at all yet.

Lemme just say that was a really good episode! Usually I kinda skim over 10+ minute RA2 videos, but I actually watched all of this one. Hey, Big Time Hammer did pretty good! Glad you knew how to AI it, I sure didn't. And I'm against the byebot next, which is always nice. Still though, anthyding could hadplen.

that's why i entered a stiltbot. i figured the extra height would let it survive slightly longer in this trial, since the HW had to knock out my legs before it could hit the chassis. doesn't matter because the robot's terrible and it's a rumble anyway, but at least it managed to do the thing it was built for

Stock extenders are hexagon-shaped, so if you look closely you can see it rotating. What I usually do is put on the extender without rotating at all to see which way the attachment point is going. Then I remove that extender, and put a new extender, rotating the second one to the relevant position.
Alternatively, you could try out DSL or Ironforge, both of which have square extenders with attachment points on all sides, so it's way less of a pain.
I think there is a skin pack or something that adds a mark to the proper side of the extender, but I donno where it is.
