Other Tutorials / Re: How to fix the F2 camera on modern systems
« on: April 27, 2016, 04:40:23 PM »
Its been awhile since I last worked on it but I have a V2 of the action cam that would allow you to have an orbit-style camera for all of the bots (even the AI). Maybe someday I'll go back and finish it but I'm a little busy with preparations for RA3 ATM. I usually use the V1 action cam instead of the builtin orbit cameras.
Nice, I haven't used Action Camera yet(but I do plan to)
When I heard that the F2 camera was broken(I didn't even know that was broken, thought it would just be that bad) but still worked in Wireframe Mode because "it lags the game" I thought that this might have something to do with the framerate(quite a lot of old games have problems with it, for example Sonic & Knuckles collection, the game has no framelimit in windowed mode at all, but there's luckily a debug.ini which allows a framerate limit.) thought I'd try it out and boom it worked, so in the end it was clever thinking and try and error.

What's DSL 2.2 exactly? I can only find download links to 2.1(but I guess they're 2.2 anyways)?

Also since I'm new here I don't know all the glitches, but as far as I understand it's the following:

Am I right with that?
Standard=no big clipping parts(but smaller ones are allowed I guess?9
IRL=no clipping at all, just what would work in real life
AI parts=normaly unaccessable in DSL
BFE=Bot File Editing
AAM=?
Hax mode=(is this the one that glitches out certain motors and allows you to place stuff in them?)

I do understand what's basically meant, something that doesn't abuse any game glitches.

Was going to reply earlier, but I recently noticed that there's no description at all while going through the downloads section, it might be good to add a link to the original topic as well.

I have no issues with anthropomorphic animals, unless:

-it becomes creepy
-it becomes fetishized
-fans of anthropomorphic animals bring them into unrelated forums/discussions
-fans of anthropomorphic animals stir sh** and drama about other people not liking them

some people in the forum may recognize what i am talking about

Of course, this looks like typical mindless cute, feel-good stuff, so nope.
pretty much my opinion on MLP fans:

-You're a fan of it? alright
-You have an avatar of it? ok
-You feel the need to post your pony stuff everywhere and see references in things that clearly aren't references? get out.

I could do a comment here about how Red's argument is not valid and how he's just seeing something negatively(possibly because he thinks that something he dislikes is something everyone in the fandom does?) but I'd rather not risk my reputation.

As for the movie, haven't watched it yet but I do plan to do that somehow, looks like a good movie which only has the problem of each movie, limited time, so expect a slow intro and then for it to suddenly start and get into action with the usual movie negative and positive events.

General Support / Re: Game crashes on splash screen
« on: April 26, 2016, 08:10:34 AM »
there is a bot6 in rookies for some reason.
It's really strange how the game writes wrong values(which only happen in non XP mode?), think that the "can't win a match" crash also happens because of something similar(from what I understand, the game writes the value if a robot is currently in an event in the teams file, if you quit the event and keep it for later those crashes start happening).

Oh, lord. I just looked up what Penders did after sonic with his "original characters donnut steel" and I found this on his website

(Image removed from quote.)

What the hell did he do to them?
That one isn't too bad, the original was nightmare fuel with those spike teeth and creepy look.

Fair enough, you don't like it, and I understand why. To answer your question: Yes, there are copyright issues, as a former artist of the sonic comics (which much of sonic chronicles was heavily based on) has taken copyrights on some of the common enemies and settings in the comics (SWATbots, etc.), as well as some of the storylines being almost completely parallel to the comics (e.g. Shade is very similar to Julie-Su, as she is also an echidna who defected from the "evil" side). So, Sega are playing it safe to ensure that they don't get into a copyright battle with this artist.
Thanks, nice to see that there are people on the internet that understand others opinions. I do have to say that it's not that bad, still a ok game and I can see why people like it, after all it's the closest we got to a Sonic RPG.
Was this the same dude that now took Julie Su(which is why the comics had to reboot) and is now doing his "original" thing with "totally not knuckles"?

If that guy's name is "Penders" (or something similar, because my memory is terrible), then you'd be correct.
From what I remember it is.

Originally wasn't going to reply as I don't have much positive to say, but oh well, might as well do:

Sorry, I don't really have much in common with your opinion, I do think that this is sadly one of the worst sonic games, with a lot of lack for a potential fun sonic RPG, instead we get a game that's full of gimmicky controls, new characters(which from what I've seen, didn't add much) and music that's made out of random background sounds.

This game could've just taken part in sonic's classic universe, having an open world like green hill where you actually fight motobugs and buzzbombers instead of random green armored armadillos and swarms of wasps, graphics are ok(could've been better, but then again it's the DS) and music... I'd say it's on the bad side but some tracks do somewhat sound ok, as if they were some alpha/first preview. I guess it was also the Ds' hardware which made the music so low quality.
Quote
From what I heard, the music was low-quality, because it was rushed, as they planned to use original sonic music, but they couldn't get the rights off the band.
It does actually use some sonic tracks in it, and those aren't exactly high quality either.

Is it really copyright issues that stopped the second game? I've heard that the first one just didn't go that well so a second one was never considered.

In short, I wouldn't say it's a good game, but probably ok. Fan Games have always done a better job at it, even if they didn't have high quality art and only were good for it's time, I do remember Final Fantasy Sonic(named because it has a Final Fantasy styled battle system) and Sonic RPG, which I'd consider somewhat good if you're ok with newgrounds stuff and don't find everything instantly cringeworthy, even if they were basically flash movies for the most part.

Other Tutorials / How to fix the F2 camera on modern systems
« on: April 25, 2016, 01:10:27 PM »
As most of you know, the F2 "follow" camera doesn't work on newer systems. This won't be a detailed guide, but it tells you the reason and what kind of software you need to fix it:
Apparently, the camera is that slow because Robot Arena 2's framerate isn't limited(except in Wireframe mode?), so all you need is a fps limiter(for Nvidia cads you can use Nvidia Inspector) and to create a profile on there(leave all options unchanged except framerate and set that to 3060 fps, don't forget to add robot arena 2's .exe and to save the profile).
That's all, worked for me.

and all the components are the same as RA2? Using the same physics engine? Smells like a quick money grab to me. I predict you will all be back to playing RA2 within 6 months time unless they make RA3 highly moddable from the onset.
They just picked the normal parts for a start, even if the game only had that it would still be superior, better graphics, sounds, better balance, stable game and multiplayer and actually being compatible with newer os'es, and as you can see they're actually listening to gametechmods and aiming to make this a fun game, so I'd say that they are definitely far away from being a cashgrab game.

wait.. so this is real this time? Trying to catch up.. The game comes out in a month on Steam? From the same developer? and how long have we known about this?
It's real yes, we've known about it since... uh, 2015? I don't think it's the same development team(not the same people, published under a different company) however they seem to care about their fans a lot and already know that they can't reach all expectations.

What version of 3DS max are you using?
The one in the screenshot? That isn't max, it's a software called Fragmotion, I prefer to model stuff in that and to only import and do the needed things in max.

To get a competitive heavyweight nowadays you'll be looking above your top estimate.
BattleBots give competitors $8000 towards their bots.
Series 3 was a loooong time ago :D
Yeah I know, it was just an example that even back then those were very expensive. Think the only series when they were somewhat "cheap" were 1 and 2(and some of the weaker Series 3 bots)

Hypno disc's wheels from S3?
Yep, not sure if I should add more details or if it's too low/high quality, also probably needs a retexture but I can't find any good textures around. I do plan to make it's stats somewhat similar to how the original ones worked, low weight, medium hp, low grip(Series3's version had the wheels spinning around a lot) and low fracture(because I don't expect those wheels to hold on for long after taking heavy damage)

Thank you! :)
It's always hard to judge the cost of this bot as a lot of it was scavenged material, but an estimate for all the internal parts, wheels, wedge and plastic would probably come to somewhere near or just above £100. Not a cheap hobby but it's so worthwhile :D
That's nice, I imagine it being harder to get used parts here(then again my parents have a lot of metal parts in the basements), definitely can see why the lighter weight classes, especially featherweights, get made, 100$ isn't that much compared to 1000$(Series 3 Hypnodisc cost 800$, and bots could easily range from 200$(reusing parts) to 3-4000.)

Well, looks like I'll make complete custom components which replace the original ones instead of reverse engineering the original ones(there's currently no way other than pyra2, which doesn't work anymore, and creating an import script would be, while still understandable, a rather long and difficult task, maybe someone who has more knowledge could take a look at it, that is if RA2 still stays alive(and with that I mean it working on new Systems without cameras breaking and compatibility issues)).

Anyways, some progress, can anyone guess where that's from?

Site News and Feedback / Re: Youtube Video Embed
« on: April 24, 2016, 03:03:42 PM »
TBH, I'm not quite sure what happened. The SMF plugin that we were using was very old and outdated so I replace it with a plugin that was still being updated. I've actually been meaning to do this for quite some time.

On a side note, I looked into how to change the behavior of embedded videos when they are quoted but it looks like I would have to replace the auto-embedding nature of them and make it so that you needed to wrap the URL in a bbcode (something like [video]VIDEO_URL[/video]) for the link to embed. Are you guys alright with this? Personally, I think it would be better but it would also be more work for me. I've already tweaked the plugin once so, either way, I'm going to have to manually update the plugin whenever there is an update.
The problem of having bbcode is that all old topics(including the ones of past tournaments, which are locked) would have no embeds anymore. I can definitely see why having bbcode is better, sadly it breaks the reverse compatiblity(unless you have some kind of script which automatically adds the code)
