Site News and Feedback / "Foul Language"
« on: April 08, 2016, 08:51:33 AM »
Quote
Foul Language — It is generally seen as bad and it may get you into trouble if you use it too often. GTM has members of all age groups and you shouldn't assume that they grew up under the same circumstances as you. Be polite and use words that won’t offend people. Search engines, like Google, also see it and it negatively impacts GTM’s SEO score (resulting in less visitors). For this reason, it is not sufficient to obscure foul language using asterisk or depend on the word filter. Warning will be issued with increasing severity if you can't control yourself.

Is this actually something that's enforced anymore? If you do a forumwide search for "sh**" or "****" (just two examples of foul language since this rule is really vague), you'll find multiple examples of people using foul language on the main forum and the mods not batting an eye to it. If this rule's isn't actually in effect then that's fine, it was stupid anyway tbh. The actual rules page itself should be updated to reflect that though.

The only difference is that he learnt how to use the Magic Wand tool. TRB, you need to get rid of your black backgrounds and not use 4 different fonts.

He also didn't build a bot that was just a horrible mess.  So there's that.
That's debatable.

nah weather it's 4WD or 6WD is mostly inconsequential on a HW popup. The main difference here is that he'll have less weaponry. Ditch the side plows though unless you plan on moving them further forward like so.

The main thing you need to focus on with popups is size. No, not making it smaller. You need to make the chassis as large as you can and as shallow as you can. Basically you want to have a chassis something like this:
Don't worry about having your chassis exposed when you do this, since chassis HP scales with size. Larger chassis means you'll be able to use upward snapping burst motors easier, and they'll act as a srimech.

Right now you have 1600 output from the 2 black batteries, and the 3 DDTs are using 1500 of that 1600. Since spin motors are 100 each, 2 DDTs and 6 HPZ are 1600 exactly. I'd use either that or 3 snapper2's. Battery stats are located here.

wedge

it wedges things

Al 5. Chassis is nearly unkillable against HS, might even pull an OOTA every so often. Skirt wedge is pretty decent as well.

fact: "Biggie Botbash" is the name of one of the tournaments that came with the stock version of RA2. Did anyone actually play the in-game tourneys more than once or twice? I didn't.

I haven't built a serious robot in stock since December or November. With Robot Arena 3, AKA "haha yeah right that'll happen when pigs fly and RA3 comes out lolzerz" coming out in a month, I might as well make something for Trios of Terror 2.

4WD HPZ flipper with plastic. Got lucky with the nifty + snapper stack. Unnamed, but I might as well just name it "ALLAHU AKBAR" or something, since that's what it does. Rushes in, gets one maybe two flips in, and then dies if the opponent isn't already OOTA. It's kind of like 09's bot, except better with a lighter setup and more battery power.

battleshots because I feel like it:

Real talk, was stock always this tedious compared to Ironforge, or has Ironforge simply spoiled me too much?  :dumb)

What's the deal with U-shaped chassis in Ironforge anyway ? They're way more common there than in Stock/DSL for some reason.
U shaped chassis gives robots all the stability of a giant 10x10 chassis wedge with a lot less of a weight investment. Why wouldn't you use a U shaped chassis?

There's no reason to change or abolish the current rep system. There are no outstanding problems that I can see.
The "outstanding problems" with rep is whole point of the thread though, innit?

new guys make judgements based on it
Again, I feel like AU titles already accomplish the "who's who" game. Maybe instead of getting rid of reputation entirely, it could be reworked to have a different enough purpose from titles to make it non-redundant. Here's a 5-minute MS paint mockup of what would be a good solution IMO:

(craaig's post in the pic is really cheesy, but you get the point)
It's basically an upvote/downvote system for individual posts rather than permanently marking someone's profile for something they posted. Similar systems are used on Facepunch and Reddit. People can upvote exemplary posts that new guys should be modeling thier own posts around and downvote bad posts. Voting should be fairly anonymous though, so people don't start flame wars over "HEY SO-N-SO WHY DID YOU DOWNVOTE MY POST? FITE ME IRL" or whatever. Although moderators/admins should be able to see who's doing what.

It should also be as available as possible to people so you don't have the same few people giving out all of the rep. Maybe you get voting privileges after being a member for a year? Feedback is appreciated.

but, in the meantime, stop making a joke of things.
I feel like the reason people treated rep as a joke (myself included) is probably because it is a joke. One of the things that people have been told time and time again when they say "wowie my rep went down u guise sux"  is that rep is just a number on the internet and that it doesn't really matter, and they're right. Rep is so incredibly flawed right now that getting rid of it or completely reworking it would be way better than what it currently is. Rep in general mostly works (people who contribute in a meaningful way generally have + rep, people who post dumb things generally have - rep), but the exact value of how much rep in either direction seems to be completely random and all over the place.
For example, why does Serge have 5 rep when he's contributed multiple tools that furthered modding RA2, compared to toAst who's 5 rep can be summed up with "made some funny posts". How come Lemonism has 15+ rep for basically "making cool bots" when Sage only has 10, considering he did the same thing for far longer and way more frequently? How did Jonzu manage to amass negative a billion rep? Certainly his drama queen asshattery (which was mostly in junkyard anyway IIRC) would validate at least some antireputation, but wouldn't his frequent showcasing and hosting of multiple tournaments cancel that out for the most part? How come Joeblo has ~10 rep for doing a lot of tournaments and RA2 modding progress (not to mention being a moderator), while I have ~20 for doing the same thing?
(nothing against you personally Lemonism/toAst, just using you as examples )
Reputation doesn't actually reflect what someone's done for RA2. It really seems that it's mainly a popularity contest as opposed to a measuring how much people have done for RA2, along with not taking contributions made before the latest rep reset into consideration. When it doesn't actually mean anything important, why take it seriously? A spam rep has about as much worth as "funny post!" or "shut up".
This is as opposed to marking people AU/vet, which is at least kind of an indicator of who's done things for furthering RA2, and honestly makes rep a bit redundant. People can get colored titles that say "this guy's good with robits", and you can get numbers that (supposedly) say "this guy's good with robits". Why? IMO you should keep the less flawed system and scrap the other one.

BTW, you said you cleaned up the garbage reps, but you didn't even get all of them. That might be because you decided to manually go through the bazillion pages of meme reps. 25 reps per page, (currently) 51 pages, and assuming you went through all of them means you reviewed roughly 1275 reputation changes... wow. I actually happened to be on when you started doing this, and you were undertaking all this work at 2 or 3 AM. Don't do that to yourself dude. :dumb)

Might as well do the same for the snappers so that it's more stable.

I've noticed that ironforge crashes more during battle than DSL or stock. It might have something to do with the beefed up motors and decreased weights.

Let's not forget that it was only sometimes 248.9, and had a 50% chance of being 249.0.

Sides look really vulnerable. FS vs something like and HS or SnS is already a bad matchup, having your sides exposed makes it even worse.

I've seen this copypasta at least 52 times before, I know I counted every single one, I have a photographic memory. I see it pasted everywhere by low life unoriginal ****ing sh** cunts such as yourself. And you know what, it isn't funny. I didn't even giggle. I didn't even smile a little bit. NOT EVEN A ****ING LITTLE BIT. You could have got a psychologist to analyse my facial expressions and body language and they'd come up with ****ing nothing. I am dead inside when I read your memes, and I have to listen to Evanescence to wake me up inside again. I had absolutely no emotion at the bottom of my soul, a part from disgust. I hate this meme bullsh**, more than I hate that sh**ty RPJK meme. You're probably like "rpjk meme is so funny le wow xDDD". ****ing sh**ty meme copying faggot plebeian. How do you live with yourself? Being so mentally deficient that you are physically incapable of an single original thought, that you have to copy paste sh**ty internet memes? How sad. How pathetic. Why don't you kill yourself? If I were you, I'd honestly kill myself right now. Memes are an art. Memes take effort and artistic integrity to create, and you think you can just spam that stupid sh** and pass it as a 'meme'. You don't know what MEMEING is. Every meme I've created is original, and actually funny, you don't know anything about harvesting memes. You're honestly a ****ing deadset idiot, ruining the meme community for you own pathetic self indulgences. You seriously think this copypasta is funny? LOL you're a deadset ****ing mentally deficient cunt.

Modifications / Re: Mr. AS's Mod (yet to be named)
« on: April 01, 2016, 02:48:17 AM »
Can't have a mod without weapon motors.

Right now it only has the default z-tek skin, but I'm probably going to give it HOT ROD FLAMEZ!!1!11 or something.

Weapon Z-teks (probably going to be renamed to avoid confusion with regular z-teks) come in 5 sizes and weigh anywhere from 25 to 105 kg. They're pretty long, and as such are recommended for use on VS or FS instead of HS. Unlike other weapon motors, the weapon z-tek can pass through the chassis. Can't be attached to the baseplate though, because that would be caster armor. Think ironforge piston.

This trait will be exclusive to the z-tek, the other weapon motors will act like weapon motors usually do.
The end result of the stuff in the spoiler box is basically that weapon motors are noobproof and have slightly nerfed maximum speed, while having quicker acceleration. This also means less chance of robots going full ADHD-spikeball mode.

Because RA3 is coming soon, and if that turns out to be good for use to essentially abandon RA2, then this will be my last tournament for this game.  So I'll have this go out with the three major mods that have different meta-games out there (sorry AS).
You can't do a tournament in a mod that isn't out yet.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: The General Chatter Thread.
« on: March 30, 2016, 04:39:47 PM »
Hi.

RA3 is very real. DSL 3 DSL 2.2 (basically dsl 3) also got released after almost a decade. Ironforge is basically a lot more balanced DSL without any filler. Stock isn't too active compared to DSL/Ironforge, but a new glitch was discovered sometime last year by 090901 and I called Advanced Stacking or ASAS which basically breaks the game even more. Robot Wars RA2 Mod (actual name) was also released. It's a replica pack with some extra custom components thrown into it, pretty cool.

Activity-wise the place is just business as usual. Old guys leave, new guys come in. Old members occasionally come back in. You know how the saying goes, you're here forever. MLP fad mostly died down after S2 (which is coincidentally when I decided to get off the MLP meme train). Inf shows up from time to time, says "I'm gonna release a new version of inf AI you guys, just you wait!" and never does. Geice is actually still around. He showcases sometimes. He's hosting a tourney right now over in the tournament section.

I was actually wondering where you went. You just kind of left without any notice. I suppose that was better than making a drama-filled "I'M LEAVING GOODBYE FOREVER" thread like TeamXtreemer did, though.

Reputation is probably the most worthless thing on the site apart from gigafrost's fear/respect rating hogwash (that nobody's bothered updating for years btw).

If you look at the most recent upreps/downreps on the first 10 or so pages, half of them are just sh**posts, and the other half are MNB's (which are also sh**posts).

Some gems include:

plus if we get rid of it, it'll stop arbitrary "why did u guise downvote me!!!1" GF-esque situations.

and opening it to everyone would be pretty cool. I don't think a week trial of whatever system would hurt either

Fun fact: it was originally open to everybody to use, but people abused it and it was restricted to AUs/vets/mod/admin only.
