Existing Games / Re: 15 favorite games of ALL time
« on: September 27, 2011, 09:18:53 PM »
In no particular order:

15: Codename: Iceman  -  One of the first games that I got for my 286 computer.  16 bit graphics, guns, car chases, great plot.
14: City Connection  -  By far my most favorite game that I had on my Nintendo Entertainment System
13: Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega was king then, and Sonic wore the crown. It was so insanely groundbreaking back then.
12: Dungeons and Dragons Pool of Radiance - Squeeeeeee! I was able to change the color of my 8 bit character!  (this was a big deal then)
11: Sewer Shark - By today's standards... the game is awful.  But it was incredibly fun back then (Sega CD btw)
10: Twisted Metal 2 - Still the best in the franchise
9: Wipeout - Got me hooked on Techno Music... have not looked back since.
8: Mechwarrior 2 - Best Soundtrack ever... ground breaking gameplay... insane action that made me sweat bullets. <3 <3 <3
7: Mission Force Cyberstorm - Not as good as Mechwarrior 2... but excellent strategic turn-based gameplay.
6: Soul Calibur - If I wasn't in my dorm room at college, I was at the pool hall kicking ass and wasting quarters.
7: Diablo - If I wasn't at the pool hall kicking ass... I was in my dorm room playing Diablo flunking out of college.
6: Worms - <3
5: Scorched Earth - Like worms but less cute.  scratch that... Guild Wars deserves to be on my list. I was playing that RPG for 3 solid years... still pop on from time to time as well.
4: Gran Turismo 4 - I think I lost 1/2 a year of my life playing this...
3: Robot Arena 2 - Still the best after all these years. <3 <3 <3
2: Full Throttle - I worship this game.  If you never play it... at least watch the walkthrough on youtube.  It's just as much fun to watch as it is to play.
1: Flat Out 2 - I can't say enough how much I WORSHIP this game in every way.  The characters, environments, gameplay, soundtrack.... etc etc etc.  There has never been a game that has pulled me in and slapped me around like crazy so much.  I loved every frickin minute of this game from start to finish.

I have a hard time with this one because servos, pistons, and PHYSICS are not happy with this game.

Had a couple of ideas that used servos and whatnot... but they didn't perform as expected due to the limitations of the game.  :P

It's been quiet in RW Virtual too. I wonder why Tournaments are not so popular anymore... even there is about 50 active members =/

I was wondering the same thing too.  Then I checked out the forum stats and noticed that overall activity takes a huge hit in September.  Members have less time due to school I guess.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Deciding on a weight class...

The only east cost competition worth going to is NERC's motorama or Franklin Cup in Harrisburg and Philly respectively.

Gah! So, are there any competitions in Boston not worth going to?  :P

I honestly don't want to put a bunch of time and effort into a bot only have that competition as my only option.  I was hoping there would be a few small-fry comps nearby that I could practice with.

Hmmmm.... I might have to do some web digging first before considering a build.  If I come up empty, I probably wont waste my time and focus on other projects.  I'm also trying to find a good RC carpet racing track nearby to race at.

Thanks for all your help everyone.  I will keep you posted if I find a Comp somewhere closer to compete in.

one for Joey's robots in australia :P

He could face Doomkiller.  Though I think dk's entry would be a firey ball of cardboard with hundreds of shaving razors taped to it.

General Support / Re: Sorry, another generic "Robot Arena 2 Crashes" query.
« on: September 23, 2011, 02:58:18 PM »
I had this problem for a short bit too...

Note: I run my RA2 stuff from my non x86 program files folder.  I also have Win7 Pro 64 Bit.

My game didn't like launching into window mode.  I had to open the .cfg file and change it so that it opened to full screen first, then I would change it to window mode if needed (which I have to for screenshots... it wont take screenshots in full screen mode)

I also found that Kaspersky Antivirus liked scanning this OLD game like crazy.  I went into my AV program and added RA2 to the trusted applications so that it would leave it the heck alone.

After I changed the .cfg to open RA2 in fullscreen it hardly crashes at all.  In my case, it seems my machine just likes it better that way.

Real Robotics Discussion / Deciding on a weight class...
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:11:47 AM »
I am feeling rather ambitious for this upcoming winter... Have to admit, seeing all of you build bots and compete is contagious.

Currently, I do not have a gameplan.  I need help finding out which competitions I can enter in the New York / Boston area of the United States and which weight class would work out for me.

If anyone can provide links to websites that would have rules and info for competitions around here that would be pretty awesome.  I might be willing to drive out to Philly, but that is kinda a stretch...

Thanks for your help.  I am going to use this thread to figure out my gameplan.

-Determine class and potential competition future
-Rough design ideas
-Determine cost of parts and best sites to order from (Paypal preferred)
-Solidify design ideas
-etc etc etc
-profit?

Awesome round 2 is awesome.

Scrap vs Somebody has to be my favorite match thus far.  Such a spectacular amount of carnage.  Teeth getting punched out and scattered across the arena floor!

Ryoku75 hasn't been online since august. I doubt that this "duel" will even happen.

/facepalm

I didn't even look at the dates. XD

Beer on a weekday... oh well.

If you are lucky, you can hook up via the online match mode in the game, but it will be super laggy.

Usually people use Hamachi to play against each other.  Damned if i know how it works.

Oh, and make sure that your games are exactly alike... if one of you builds a bot using components that the other person does not have in their game... it will crash.

Hope this helps.

<3 the name.

Yeah, what they said.  The drive is overkill.  Try to strictly use ants for all your builds.  The general rule with ants is one per spinning motor and you should be set.

Glad to see you in the DSL showcase section.

Nice!

Man, this bot does have magical self-righting capabilities.

To sweeten the deal. I will offer +1 rep to the successful host that completes this.

Grim Fandango.

Yes!

And I thought I was the only one that remembered that game.  Pretty much anything by Lucas Arts from the early days could make an awesome movie.

Grim
Full Throttle
Dig
Monkey Island
etc etc etc...
