Hello!
I'm new to these forums but I've been playing RA2 for a while and stream on Twitch sort of regularly. I'll be streaming RA3 tonight starting around 8 PM EST for a few hours. Come watch if you want! Or don't watch if you don't want!

Managed to catch the second half of your stream. It was... enlightening. FRIDGE BOT for the win!

Shame that Hellachopper was DQ'ed though. The arena walls are now 1.75" thick and apparently they were STILL too dangerous to fight!
Was there ever any actual confirmation that "dangerous" meant "Your weapon is too powerful to contain" rather than "You've already started one LiPo fire and we're not convinced you won't spectacularly malfunction again"? I'm skeptical that Hellachopper is really that powerful of a robot, or that they wouldn't just be able to turn down the weapon speed rather than having to be banned outright.
Hellachopper's builder left me a comment on Reddit that seemed to point toward the safety officials' perceived instability of their weapon being the reason for their disqualification. There were plenty of lipo fires at the event, haha.

I was at the full taping of the event, and have been helping piece together which alternates got to compete. This was a much larger event than the previous season, and you all definitely won't be disappointed. :)

Since it's Unity I'd imagine people would be able to take assets from the Unity store and use them to make components.
Which, I hope that doesn't happen.

lol, You guys know I am deathly paranoid about pimping my own projects these days. XD I only posted #4 on Reddit because I left it up 2 days and no one claimed the free link karma.

I'm honestly astonished, not just that they acknowledge it but actually recommend it despite the site's admittedly abrasive content. XD
Pressure's on now. Gotta make episode 5 a good one.

Thanks guys :D I've been reading at work, but since this website is blocked at work I haven't been able to post a proper thank you. XD

It's a hard sell for the first couple seasons because you don't really have footage on-hand that you can default to, so spoilers unfortunately happen.

Chomp would have only had a chance if they got a lucky poof with their flamethrower. Otherwise, saw that coming a mile away.
Warhead pretty much just had a repeat of his last opponent, and that fight was humiliating. The slow mo replays were painful to watch. Warhead did not stand a chance at all.
Kinda bummed that Ghost Raptor only had 1 weapon and now it's toast. I was eager to see what became of Warrior's minibots. Worth it.
The best part about Plan X's fight is that the brain was devoured by the screws. Not only did Bronco win, it put its opponent in a permanent vegetative state. I have no idea how I'm going to play this one for BattleBots Update.

This is my first time really reading one of your articles.
"I like it" is an understatement and a paragraph of rectum snogging just looks bad, so have whatever this sentence is and consider it a compliment.
I get ya, haha. :) Thanks! <3 Sadly, I won't be recording and uploading the videos anymore due to copyright strikes and that :/. There are plenty of others that upload the fights, though. You'll just have to wait a bit longer for their videos.
That sucks man. I appreciate what you did for the first two episodes, it was not only doing a solid for the robot combat community (especially our international friends) but it also let me work on the go. :)

So, I have a general construction question. I understand most of the parts of assembling various kinds of weapons (except for pneumatics/hydraulics) but one thing that eludes me is how you put hubs and wheels and stuff onto driveshafts. I would imagine a press-fit would easily come apart, which makes set screws an obvious choice. But not every motor has a "D" head.
That leads me into my next question, how are the actual blades getting mounted on their weapon shafts? $50 follow-up, how are free-spinning axles built?
The "lower" tech the solution is, the better. I'd like to actually build a lightweight if the sport makes a comeback, but I'm not really keen on spending tons of cash on motors and batteries and all that. I take the Team K.I.S.S. approach to things and just pick parts from junk/scrap. That said, are Power Wheels batteries allowed? They are SLA's. (I'm terrified of batteries and working with electrical components, so having a robot that charges by literally plugging it into the wall is nice.)
edit: Let me clarify "low tech". The other day I was trying to take a motor and its belt/pulley assembly off of a clothes dryer that was being thrown out. (I stopped because I ended up slicing a finger open on part of the metal frame.) Being realistic here, what's the feasibility that the pulley assembly would have been of any use to me in making a spinner? I would assume the motor is a bust because it needs 110V or something, it was the pulleys I wanted.

That's a load off my shoulders because I felt like I may have been a bit too edgy on Chuck.
edit: I trust GTM because you all are an amazing bunch of folks. Please let me know if I ever push something too hard or you think I'm getting a bit unraveled/unclear. I installed Google Analytics on BBU before launching it, and watching the page hits skyrocket after being posted on Reddit and shared by the actual teams and builders has left me a bit short on breath and fidgety. Like I had mentioned in one of the Reddit threads, I was too nervous to open the comments of one of the articles there. I've had to ask colleagues to open emails for me and screen them to see if I should prepare myself for the worst when I read them. (Yes, I am currently seeing a doctor for all of this.)
I am by no means trying to glamorize myself and see myself as a celebrity, but I don't handle attention and/or fame well. It's pretty much widely known now that post-RA2 I returned to "the furry fandom" wherein I was at one point a hot commodity as a writer. I was rubbing elbows with a lot of people in authoritative positions and being invited to speak at conventions. I slowly got worse and worse until I stopped writing, and subsequently faded from the public eye. I don't want that to happen again with BattleBots Update.
Anyways, I'm sorry for the diatribe. Back on topic, I've prepared a garbage bag for Radioactive ahead of time.

That's so crazy. XD I love that they preface it with the potty mouth warnings. :P I'm always so paranoid that the drivers are going to see the site and take offense, even though as far as I know that hasn't exactly happened yet, Also, I'll probably stick around here to chatter about BattleBots as opposed to /r/battlebots. While the articles I write are well-received all around, I just get the vibe that the community there doesn't actually like me all that much.

Thread necro! :D I did a thing! BattleBots' return got me all hot and bothered that I had to take something apart and make a robot right this very moment (last weekend). Behold, this unnamed abomination: Its base is built from a remote controlled tank and its spinning weapon was made from a busted tape deck I bought on the cheap at Goodwill. I only had very limited parts and tools to work with, but I still managed to whip something up that I'd definitely like to work from in the future, now that I make enough money where a small robot such as this is not necessarily cost-prohibitive if I budget accordingly. I really hope this newfound interest in the sport brings it back to Texas.

Over the years I have made a name for myself as a cynical and snarky pessimist. That said, I won't be joining the hate/skeptical train for this game. I am legitimately surprised and impressed that Robot Arena is also seeing a revival. I have very fond memories of the game and of its community. I chose to spend my high school years in the RA community, and I do not regret that. (Mostly.) I will buy Robot Arena 3 on the day it comes out. I will take the day off of work and do nothing but absorb myself in the game, because the motorsport of robot combat and the community surrounding it means so much to me. Even if this game is utter sh**, I will still be thankful that the franchise was remembered by its developer and another title was released. It's not very often that a game gets rebooted after that much time in the darkness.
We will always have RA2, and we will always have the mods for RA2 and the modders who continue to outdo each other in what we thought was possible in the game. Can you imagine the bricks that would be sh** if you posted a screenshot from today's RA2 mods on AceUplink in 2003? Dummee's very first component was an SNES cartridge (I think), a ****in rectangle. Look at where we are now.
Also, hello TDS. I did not know you had an account here. When given the opportunity, I've tried to genuinely make amends with people whom I've wronged in the past. I hope that an apology 12 years overdue still holds some merit. I am truly sorry for being an annoying piece of sh** on AceUplink. At the time I thought it was the funniest thing in the world, but in hindsight I see now that I pretty much systematically destroyed the website by getting new user registrations heavily restricted and moderated. I am not proud of that, nor am I proud of maintaining and promoting a hostile attitude toward you and AceUplink. I did a lot of underhanded sh**, some of it I'd completely forgotten about until it was brought up by Carp, AW, or Mad Scientist. I know there's probably something unsavory that I did to/toward you that I've long since forgotten, and I am sorry.
