Discussion / Re: Is it time to give up on DSL 2.2 for DSL-S play?
« on: October 12, 2016, 07:33:36 AM »
If it's unofficial,  nobody will use it. I don't think Click would be opposed to a balance patch, but we should get his input, both as a courtesy to the guy who made it, and because he'd be a lot of help in determining how much to nerf them to keep them balanced for standard play.
This, I think it should be talked about with Click first, I guess there was a simple error in the calculation for the broken weapons(full weight of mechav discs instead of only one tooth getting taken into account for bonuses), don't think that it being inofficial would be an issue, since I can see people quickly using it for tournaments and everyone else then starting to use it because of that.

Speaking of DSL 2.2.1, it would be a good time to include a patch that fixes some general things, like the broken arenas/Freestyle not working at all and possibly some component AP's like Beta Bursts or NPC Rights(or was it Lefts?) by making new components and having the old ones in a cheatbot 2 menu, just like Click did with the hinges?

We introduced a clause to allow conditional extensions depending on circumstances long ago to remove that sort of panic stress.

2 Week Technical Extensions can be granted on proof that the host has experienced technical issues while running the tournament.
Discretionary Conditional Extensions may also be granted, on proof that the tournament has been making progress closely previous to the deadline. This will mean you will have to upload at least 6 videos a week until the tournament is complete, and will not gain a Host Score point, however will mean you do not lose 1 from letting the deadline lapse.
True, I've read about this before, still think it would be better if a Tournament Host got a host point if everyone was ok with a little delay and if he did everything great otherwise/doesn't delay tournaments all the time, however I know it's a difficult decision between making sure that stuff goes right and making it as user friendly as possible, so I understand.

I don't know what exactly happened(I guess the losers bracket was cancelled at some point but now added back?) but it's nice to see this continue.

Never thought that a AI would continue to attack a dead bot, and it looked like the team bots attacked eachother? I wonder if that's just a bug in the AI coding where it checks for a chassis in general and not if that one is not from the team?

I didn't notice that the bot images from before the fight were cut from the splash.
The bots in the bonus fight preview were the wrong ones? Or was that the 4th fight because of havoking with the second one being the actual bonus match?

I didn't know I'd face Blizzard in the bracket like that(by the way I'd include the robot names in the video next time), but I can already tell that this one will be fun to watch(as long as the main chassis doesn't get hit first)

Tournaments are a great way to improve, as you can see why your bot sucks by watching how it loses, and so improve its weaknesses. Don't be scared of entering because you're not good, showcase your entry before submitting it to get advice, and you'll be fine.

tl;dr do it even if you suck.
I understand what you mean, even if this is only limited to 12 entries.
Thing is, I don't see the design that I have in mind working at all in DSL(at least not in this way unless I weapon/motorspam) but I do have two new concepts in mind.

That pumpkin one is a work of ****ing art.
Really? While I liked the original concept that I had, I found that the final bot could've been a lot better

I mean, in all fairness, at least #6 isn't a re-entry. Isn't this like the 5th time you've re-entered Mr. Bones?

In all fairness, 6 was ugly.  At least I tried to make mine look good.

Is how I see it anyway.
The Skeleton part of 6 is having some problems, if it wasn't for that then it would've been a good entry I guess.

And yours wasn't a simple reentry, while it wasn't exactly having much that makes it different, it was playing on the fact that it's a reentry and has won two BotM's that way, which made it amazing, definitely would've got my vote.

Craaig's Stiltbot looks just like the LW I once made, except with a bigger chassis and more batteries in it.

Actually I ripped it off of Mr AS and 09 so there. Whatcha gonna do now PUNK huh? HUH?
That's why I entered a multistiltbot :^)
and it's going to be destroyed in Round 1

Thinking about entering, but I can't really build something decent enough.

my HS is sh**, watch out kids.
Still best looking entry, also like the shape of Neigh and Firestorm999's bot.

ty4er's bot reminds me of the one that Redace entered in your derby, almost a full copy.

Surprised how compact RedlineM203's bot is.

Also my clusterbot just has the team name "Shyguys on Stilts", think I did mention that in the PM?
I've updated the splash correcting that and another mistake.
Thanks, didn't know if Splashes were going to get updated.

Mr Bones on the other hand is still nice, I don't fully remember the original but wonder where you got the weight for it. Or was the original a LW?

The original had a saw weapon on one arm, which I removed to make weight for the glasses.
right, the double axle small ztek while the powered up Mr Bones(done in DSL?) had a flywheel, a flamethrower and another weapon.

Conglaturations to R01.  I don't mind losing to his bot.  I do mind losing to #6 though.
Thanks, I wasn't sure if I should vote(didn't know if voting for your own entry would be allowed/wouldn't really want to do that, and worried that voting for Mr Bones would make it win. I wouldn't mind seeing Mr Bones on the front page again but at the same time seeing a unique entry miss it by one vote would've been sad).

As for 6, when you first look at it, it does look nice, especially the trumpet(which is made out of custom components?), however then you look at the skeleton and it doesn't even look like a full skeleton head with way too many holes, doesn't even look like it has eyes if it wasn't for the sunglasses.
Splash also doesn't exist and I'm sure that giving it a meme look would've still been possible with a higher quality splash.
So a bot that looks good at first but the more you look at it falls down, also could've had a proper chassis without any clipping.

Mr Bones on the other hand is still nice, I don't fully remember the original but wonder where you got the weight for it. Or was the original a LW?

Most of the entries looked very nice and im happy R01 won it but I have one question... who the hell voted for my piece of junk!
I do think your bot had a nice concept, just needed a bit more work and a better splash.

If Barry Bee Benson doesn't win we've all failed.
Does it have a custom hitsound that reads the entire Bee Movie script?

Also gotta love how both R(01 and 1885) entires look similar and are rushed.

Mine doesn't have any custom parts or smartzones(also get Mad's smartzones), so if that doesn't work I'd download the latest RA2 1.4 from GTM again.

Well...
This was definitely surprising.
After seeing surprisingly positive feedback(some questioning the bot, while others the Arial font) I thought this would be a race between Grim Harvester, Not Mr Bones and the Skeleton Hoverbot(doesn't have a name?) meme.

Thoughts:
Building:
Splash:
Thanks for all the positive feedback guys, thought about releasing it before, so here it is(in the custom section since Retooled doesn't have one yet)

Feel free to use it, but I'd like if you mention my name as creator of the original.

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars Series 2 Discussion Thread

Read about it, nice to see it back but they surely aren't giving people any time. Wish they'd just announce this stuff half a year earlier and then do it in a good time instead of in winter again(I guess they want to broadcast the series at the same time every year, however I'm surprised that they haven't learned about the cold issues in winter)

As for the time limit, I'd personally rather go into the other direction of removing limits and instead asking people if the Tournament was still going on and then deciding if a thread should be locked/time limit given, think it just scares away members.

Not a good idea. Removing limits is removing any reason for the host to finish the tournament in a timely matter.
It kinda comes down to who you want to treat better. The hosts, or the many many members who enter. If you remove limits and tournaments don't finish in a timely matter the members who entered are honestly wronged. We have many hosts and the hosts are made aware they are doing this off their own back in accordance with the rules, they shouldn't be letting entrants down if they have agreed to host a tournament.
I didn't mean completely removing them, but hosts shouldn't feel stressed by time or not get a host point just because something was one or two days too late because of personal stuff that happend, the people that have been around here recently didn't look like ones that would never finish a tournament, however now that new members start to appear again, I think it's better to have the limit.

R01 and Badger, if you read what Mr. As has put, he has stated that we have active mods, therefore, we do not need more.
That's something I mentioned as well and was why we were talking about a new group that gets to use admin features.
Quote
What we do need though, is another admin. I have already stated my reasoning for why we should have another one (8 posts up).
True, in the end you still need a admin and it would be better to make sure that there's always at least one active admin.
Quote
I would just like to also point something out here which I feel is very important. (So important I'm making it bold)

I find it interesting how so many people are agreeing with Mr. As on these subjects that he brings up in these topics. People seem to have a lot to say about each one but why is it Mr. As always posting the topics in the first place?

To me, this shows that members of the community are worried about stepping out of line. Why hasn't anyone said this before if people had such strong views on it? No one wanted to is why. Members are worried about being shot down with ideas which could be classed as controversial. I think it's time we changed the attitude towards this. With a new admin, I believe they can lead to change the conservative nature of the forum into one which is more accepting which will mean that the forum is much more approachable than it has done in the past.
I've noticed that before, however the way I saw it was this, when I joined it was a "hey, welcome to GTM, we aren't as active and big as we used to be, but we're still doing alright as small community" and honestly, at the time AS did the post, I felt like GTM was growing a bit again, so it was a rather late post. Then again, I'm a person that doesn't really fit into this community as others and don't plan to be here that much, so my opinion probably shouldn't be counted as much if the community wants something completely different.

Don't think that the old inactive admins should be removed, just add more admins, not like there's a number that limits that.

Just FYI.. the Moderator permissions group cannot Ban or Edit profiles anymore.. that ability has been gone for some time now...
Got removed a long time ago when Naryar used the ban power without permission or something like that while the profile editing got removed because one day Naryar changed people's names who requested it and I guess ACAMS didn't like that.  :dumb)

Hey, here's a dumb idea, maybe have a little "In Signups:" box on the homepage? Like between the Recent Posts and Who's Online boxes?
I do think that would be nice, so people know what's currently happening, maybe also one for Tournaments that have started?
As for the time limit, I'd personally rather go into the other direction of removing limits and instead asking people if the Tournament was still going on and then deciding if a thread should be locked/time limit given, think it just scares away members. Giving people a week for signups would be nice.
