We like old fashioned metal because it isn't supposed to appeal to the mainstream and has none of the silly lyrics modern metal and pop-punk have. We don't like pop as it's mainstream and therefore played often, as well as having the predictable lyrical themes and dull/nill musicianship.
Prog is fun because it relies on odd musical elements and a level of complexity not brought by other genres.
Decent hip-hop or trip-hop is entirely decent though.
I hate mainstream.
