Modifications / Re: The DSL 3.0 preview thread
« on: March 17, 2012, 07:44:25 PM »
This thread has been dormant for too long.  New stuff is coming soon.

Hint:  I'm completely reworking the one type of component that was never properly balanced in DSL2.  (Think about it for a moment... should be obvious.)

I know with have the DSL mod, and i know it contains matilda, sir killalot and growler. But i would find it awesome if we had shunt from Robot wars. Just a thought, not saying it HAS to be done but would be pretty neat :) thanks for reading

I agree.  I also think we need Dead Metal and Sergeant Bash to make a complete team of house bots.  But, I have other things higher on my to-do list right now.

Here's what FB and I have been up to on the AAGH server.

It's obviously not finished yet, we still have to put some actual gardens on it, and make the lower level interiors more fancy, but the basic structure is complete.

If anyone has any extra lapis lazuli lying around, we are accepting donations with which to pave some of the interior.  :P  (Really, what else are you going to use it for?)  We've got plenty of sand and a few extra dirt and leaves to trade as well if you don't want to just give away your lapis lazuli for free.

(Oh, and I'm using Imageshack because I feel the GTM uploader should not be used for non-RA2 material... is that still the best image host or is there a better one now?)

current nulocke team at victory road, they're a tad on the low lvl side, so i have a bit of training before I challenge the E4

I thought one of the rules of Nuzlocke was to give all your Pokemon meaningful nicknames? :trollface

Looks like you're doing well.

A different version of the bot posted yesterday. Not sure if it's better or worse. But it is invertible. Still 249.0, still DSA.

Have you tried attaching the weapon motors by the end attach point, like you did on the LW you just posted?  I imagine a wider weapon would make it better at grabbing HS's and taking off extenders.

Both LW's look fantastic.

Modifications / Re: Realistic Arena
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:27:32 PM »
The floor of the Combots arena isn't really wood, it just looks that way in that picture because of the lighting and angle.

You'd do better with a textured metal floor, maybe with tile divisions.  Though the wood floor does give it a kind of grungy, small "garage tournament" feel.

That was a suitably epic finale for such a long tourney.

FB needs to hear about this thread...

My family has two cats.  Just this evening, one of them decided to sleep on my dad's laptop's keyboard while he was eating supper.    One more reason not to leave my own laptop open and unattended.

2 spots left!

Also, and I hope G.K. will let me do this, an extremely helpful modification to the rules occurred to me that just makes me feel stupid. Since most of you don't go on the forum every other day, rather than PM'ing me the bot you want to use for one match at a time, you can just do it all in one PM as soon as the splash is done. For example, if my bots were Tempus Fugit and Child's Play IV:

Team 1: Child's Play IV
Team 2: Tempus Fugit
...
Team 8: Tempus Fugit

It works because you should be able to choose one bot that has the best matchups against each team, no matter when you face them in the tournament, after you've seen them all in the splash.

I was going to do that anyway, I just assumed it would be OK.  However, you should be allowed to change your picks later too, if for instance you see a bot fight and decide your other bot would actually be better against it.

I don't even think I've played 20 games, at least I don't remember that many well enough to rank them all.

This.

Nobody said anything about ranking, he's just listing his top 50 games (in no particular order, I assume).

I've played more than 50 games in my life but most so long ago I don't remember them that well.  As for which games get on the list, with such a long list, usually it will be highly correlated with whatever games you happen to have played and moderately enjoyed at some point in your life, and not necessarily with any inherent value in the actual games.

Great!  There's a few more things you could tweak (small wedges are usually better than Emergency wedges) but that bot is almost as good as it's going to get now.

Also I don't think I've ever seen such prompt responses to building advice.    *secretly wonders if I told GRW to give the bot N12 wheels and ninja stars, if he would do it*

*actually that would look kinda cool*

is it bad that i only have 1 gb of RAM?

More would be ideal, but my first computer that I recorded the early BBEANS matches on only had 512 MB of RAM, so 1 GB should be manageable.  RA2 does not have very demanding system requirements.

Based on what you told me, I'm guessing you have one of those little netbook computers, which are not meant for gaming... maybe the processor isn't powerful enough?  I'm not sure what kind of processors they put in those netbooks, but again RA2 isn't very demanding... I can't think of anything else that might help.  Try JD's advice.

They do, but not enough.

But that gives me an idea... I wonder if I could use that extra 3 kgs to expand the bottom/front of the chassis and make a parallelogram.  But then the casters wouldn't cover as much area... might be worth trying anyway.

Get the new Tactics.py; it won't be an idiot then. ;)

Also, it should switch tactics regardless of which Flipper.py it is using.  I didn't touch any of that code.

Looking good.  Any way to fit more axe heads on there?  Possibly add a third baseplate anchor?

No idea why Elan can't steer when inverted, though. If it can steer right-side-up it should be able to do that upside-down as well, unless there's something blocking the wheels' way. o_o

Bots with a completely sideways chassis can never turn.  Elan's chassis is sloped on one side so it tilts up and is able to drive normally.  However, the other side is flat so the chassis is completely sideways when inverted.

Getting there, but don't use the long pole spikes (they get in the way of the axes and aren't very good weapons anyway) and a long single wedge in the middle (see X-Press from Ironbot) would be better than that awkward double wedge setup there.  Double wedges on a single burst motor never seem to work well.

Lol I just made a LW dual HS with casters and a LW N00bot-type popup as well, but I think you did them both slightly better.

How's the popup against HS?

The FS/hammer hybrid needs trapping arms or a wedge but I have no idea how you would get weight for them.

Woooooooo brobots

And how better to fit with the 'BroBots' theme than with Order of the Stick-themed bots?

First, here's Elan.  I needed a Child's Play clone to deal with single-motor HS, but I didn't want to clone Child's Play, so I ended up with this.  Pretty self-explanatory.  Casters are awesome, but the driving is a bit wonky sometimes (the AI has an annoying tendency to hug the walls), and just like how Elan isn't really invisible, he's not really invertible either.  Because of the way the chassis is built, he can't turn upside-down, only go forward and backward.

He has DSA and 3 kgs I have nothing to do with.

And the other member of the team is, you guessed it, Nale.  I needed a popup to beat other Child's Play clones and possibly beat other popups, and Nale does the job.  The front of the chassis is as wide and shallow as possible in order to deflect hits from spinners and slide under quickly for the kill.  The original idea was actually to make a sort of LW N00bot.  He's not as wide and shallow as I wanted, but he's wide and shallow enough.  The wedge is very good as well, so he has a chance of beating other popups and flippers that would be a major problem for Elan.

DSA, 2 razors.

Side note:  I just downloaded NC's movepixel while making these bots and holy carp, how did I survive without this for so long.

It's not very likely that the opponents are going to get to your wheels.

Have you fought an HS (or worse, an SnS) with a rammer in stock?  Your wheels are sometimes the first components to come off if they're not protected.

The bot looks cool; neat arrangement of spikes there.  If possible, I would use maces for wheel guards though, because they cover a greater area.  I would also downgrade to a Nifty or even two small battery packs and then add more weapons.  16 iron spikes used to be enough to beat most HS, but now the standard for HS is 18 spikes, so you want to at least tie that.
