Real Robotics Discussion / Re: BattleBots Season 2 Discussion Thread
« on: July 29, 2016, 11:42:06 AM »
Personally I wasn't a fan of this rule change, which I think is why they deserve it. A lot of comments also reminded me of the terrible Series 7 of Robot Wars. Don't want battlebots to go down but if they keep this up then it might happen.
What rule change? Also I still consider the new BattleBots being much better than Robot Wars Season 7 or the new Robot Wars.
This is new in Season 2, but if your robot pushes with a wedge and doesn't use it's weapon actively it will lose aggression points, that's what happened to Lockjaw, Sawblaze vs Razorback as well as a bit to Stinger(to be fair, both winning would've had it's pro and cons, either Mega Tento being called useless by a lot of people or Stinger getting an early exit).

Of course it's still better, last Episode just had some bits that sounded similar("A lot of roboteers are changing their design to see what works best, but Tombstone doesn't because it's design already works", as if they didn't do any internal changes, and it evolved from Last Rites after all. Technical talk was going on, this then just gets cut, enough talking "who's ready for a fight in here?" or if you want to take the new episode as a example, the talk about the lifter arm on Hypershock, the important bit is the vertical part, as long as that's there it should still be able to self right) and Warhead was way too overhyped in my view.

I'm not even bothered about how crap it is I won't be improving or winning
But it can be, don't give up with it.

Would it be possible to create a bot that only starts using it's second weapon once the enemy hp reaches 0 or the first weapon(set via ID) breaks down?
Yes. It is possible.
How would one do that? I'm also interested on how you would read other stuff about the enemy bots, like their current rotation(based on their default forward heading),changing tactics depending on time left or being able to rotate your own bots servo motors until they reach a certain degree.

While I don't have a Mac I find this good but I would find it even better if you told people how to do this.

They're there - the game has tags for robots based on which version of the game it was built in. v1.0.0.2 being the latest, of course.
How do you view them?
Like I mentioned before, it doesn't look like I'm able to see it via the steam shop page or the general steam workshop page.
You'd need to download them ingame. Steam workshop doesn't allow online downloads, it's all via the game client.
Hoped that people could at least view them on the workshop page, similar to how you can with other steam workshop things.

People commonly say that Emergency Wedges are worse, but I believe that it depends how they are used.
You are right, but there is a point on them being worse on average. on some of my wedge testing i feel like the wider the wedge is and the further you get away from the center of the hinge the worse it gets. Surface area actually hurts you the less hinges you have for your wedge. However I'm not sure why then something like a spike strip wouldn't be better than a small wedge, i'm guessing angle has a lot to do with it as well.
Thanks, I haven't seen that yet, only saw Click's old Mythbuster thread. No idea how it is in DSL with the hinges, wedge pieces and all that, but I can imagine that weight plays a big part as well. From what I remember Spike Strips are heavier than Emergency Wedges(which are heavier than normal ones), Spikes seem to work well(but the iron one is 10 kg as well), so maybe pole spikes?
Also you know how axles can glitch? I think something similar happens with the skirt wedges here, the further they are away, the more likely they will bend on impact.

yay another VS, it looks good but you really need front protection or those supports will be gone quick.

Interesting VS bud.

Couple of things:

- 2 Black Batts are more than enough to power this, so feel free to get rid of the pinks. A good rule of thumb is 1 black battery for every 4 HP zTek Motors you have.
- Don't use square extenders. They are the same strength as black/red ones but they weigh more. The exception is of course the 140cm one that only weighs 5kg, feel free to use that.
- The front wheel supports need more protection, if they go your bot losses all stability. More weight needs to be invested in securing them. You could also tidy up the extender work a bit. For example instead of using the T-connector at the bottom, why not try using a 2cm black extender and it's side attachment point?

How well does it perform?
But are 2 Black Batts enough to power it the entire match without power loss? Would be interested in knowing more about this as I've heard that adding a 3rd battery makes burst motors stronger and allows zteks to spin faster?

« on: July 29, 2016, 07:00:21 AM »
I've never seen this Bamzooki stuff before but it seems to be interesting(going more into the animal instead of vehicle direction and being more challenge than combat focused(so it's what Technogames was to Robot Wars?), looks like the site(which surprisingly is still up) can only be accessed from the UK.
Guess they wanted kids to still have engineering stuff to do, and what better way to do that than making it all virtual, no cost for parts or any of that, playing all that with augmented reality must've been fun and I can only imagine how a Robot Arena 2 like game would've worked with that.

Nice to see that we got the series 3 champion here, you might enjoy Robot Arena 2.

I probably wont even bother lol I don't think it would work anyways I mean look at how terribly it performed in its last tournament.

A terrible performance isn't always a bad thing.

Hopefully it helps highlight what you need to change in order to make it a better robot.

I think the weight played a big part in your design not succeeding, I mean look at Badgers pop-up in the very same tournament... What does it have that yours doesn't?
- More Wedges/Better Wedges
- More Drive
- More Armour
- More Spikes

All of which are easy enough to add to your design.

ALso regarding your question, just experiment a bit and see what happens. That's what I'm doing at the mo, just messing around, trying some new ideas out, the RA2 wiki is very old remember.
He's talking about OA3, the clusterbot, which I think is alright like that, maybe changing the extenders a bit so that more razors could be put on it. The other bot was unfinished from what I remember.

would an emergency wedge on OA3 be better than the small one?
People commonly say that Emergency Wedges are worse, but I believe that it depends how they are used. Don't just follow the mainstream opinion, it's like saying "Servos are useless now, we have Blue Snappers", yet those things are so unstable where Servos keep the entire thing more solid, try it out to see how it works and then decide.

Also, be more happy, noone dislikes you, you're a nice friendly user and your bots are good. So unless you want to talk yourself down for some reason, there's really no reason to be like that.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: My computer is dead, help

@R01

Both the iGPU and GPU output no video, which is why I found this strange. With the help of a tech support IRC room (the last place I thought I would go for tech support advice) I managed to basically confirm it was a motherboard issue. I was worried that I'd have to go through Gigabyte's 1 month RMA process, but since I bought it off Amazon they're sending me a replacement within 48 hours no questions asked, which is super cool, especially as I started the support chat at 11:30pm.

Bad news is I can't work on People's Choice until then. Much better result than I was expecting though.
Alright, it seemed odd that you wouldn't get any output in the BIOS(a quick search showed that sometimes removing and putting the ram back in as well as holding the power button for a few seconds when the pc was completely unplugged, fixed the issue) which made me guess it was hardware, but still good to try out the software things first.
Good to hear that you're getting a replacement that fast. Would you usually have to fill out all details of what happened when and have Gigabyte analyze the stuff if it wasn't bough off Amazon?

As someone who works in IT and has helped others I try to get all the important info first as it quickly allows to see where the problem could be and if someone had the problem before, so many issues have happened to many people before that finding a possible solution isn't too difficult.

I liked the original one better(mostly because I'm not much of a fan seeing AI parts on all bots) but this one is probably more effective. Is the flamethrower firing all the time?

So, best to ask here, but how do you actually see the workshop, or is it in game/if you own the game? I haven't bought RA3(or played it) but was interested in seeing what people built, Steam Workshop(which I dislike by the way, why do you need to subscribe to dl stuff and keep it activated?) doesn't show anything when I search for it and the game store page doesnt' show anything either. And NO I'm not owning a pirated version or anything like that.

Copy/paste for a homshardware post

My PC is not outputting any video, either through the motherboard or the GPU outputs, to my monitor or a TV, Displayport or HDMI. It is definitely booting fine, as I can hear the windows login screen sound, but I cannot get any video output, not even in the BIOS.

The problem occurred when I tried to change my monitor's refresh rate from 144hz to 60hz in the hopes of fixing a visual bug (which I've encountered many times before, I usually just restart to fix it.). When I boot, my monitor wakes from sleep, and my TV autoswitches to the HDMI input, as thought they are getting a signal, but on both a "No signal" error is displayed.

My GPU is a 970 and I'm on windows 10, if that matters. What steps can I go through to try to fix this? Yes, I've tried restarting multiple times.

Will give prize to whoever manages to fix it.
To sum it up quick(most important info for others trying to help):
Refresh Rate change from 144hz to 60hz resulted in no signal, not even in the bios.
You changed the refresh rate inside windows with the windows tools, right?

Does your pc have a internal graphics card? If so then can you try to unplug the normal graphics card and use that?
Does your pc usually show a bios screen/can you be sure that you actually entered the bios?
Safe Mode might help, but ever since Win8 you can no longer access that via F8(one of the many reasons why I find anything past 7 to be a downgrade and would want MS to get their stuff together), there is a different way(turning off the power many times) but I wouldn't recommend doing that/only if really needed and not before anyone tells you to do so.

Discussion / Smartzones in DSL
« on: July 28, 2016, 12:04:16 PM »
So I've noticed that DSL2's smartzones are all 0.1 kg(guess back then people thought that they couldn't be 0 kg?), MAD's has this updated for all except the beam on which is still 0.1. Is DSL ever going to get a update that fixes this as well as adding a few other things(Ruler & better grid for chasiss creation, armor tab that remembers the armor you picked(it does that in ironforge))?

519
There's also Invertebrat from series 3 and 4 of Robot Wars. Made a heat final, with little other success.
Right! I was wondering where I had seen a FS because I did remember seeing a design somewhere(think a different bot had it as well?) Invertabrat(also known as Inverterbrat in Series 4) looked like this:
The success was more because of the front flippers and in 2 out of 3 fights in Series 4 it lost because the flipper got stuck, making it unable to touch the ground and keep on moving.

Modifications / Re: Replacing models in DSL?
« on: July 28, 2016, 08:10:50 AM »
It's the skins that need the update more than the models in my opinion.

Also for the 50 flips thing, are you using only an extender? If a motor has very little weight on it it can havok and freak out. Try adding some more.
Think he's doing motor stacking
  • Is there a way to fix the wonkiness of motors with extenders attached to them with motors on them? I've been trying to create a design with a controllable tail but so far have faced many many problems with the tail doing 50 flips every time I try to activate it, even with servo motors. Similar problem with a different component for my Stinger Replica.
Probably to create a Snake like robot that waves around to move forward?
