Cat ears don't work in this game do they? The NPC collision prevents the majority of it from leaving the chassis

Aye, that's why you turn it 180 degrees so that the attachment point of the NPC is within the cat ear, and the majority in the mesh is now in a much smaller space, like this-

Also, hey! Ion Horse 6 looks pretty good, shame about the extender work - change to DSL bars instead of whatever you're using now for a bit more weight leverage, and see what you can do from there. Also, downgrade any extenders you're using from Steel to Tite, for even more weight bargaining room.

But hey, you're getting there! Keep going, and you'll have a decent gutripping VS by the end of it! I really like the way you worked the Firestorm Flippers into the mix, too (yeah, they're still OP.)

The extenders for the wedge are actually large beaters. Always used to last ages cus of the high fracture, dunno if they're still good.

I'll see what I can do in regard to the front armour but normally the angles I can get with baseplate anchors are kinda inflexible. Chassis is kinda fat at the back but it's actually perfect to the pixel or thereabouts to have both the NPCs and the baseplate anchors parallel.

Hmm... I haven't tried using Large Beaters as extenders for wedges in DSL 2.2... I used them as extenders for a hammerbot I made, and they seem to work well, but for the wedges, I'd think that 25x50 DSL Bars might be more weight-efficient and practical.

Yeah, I know the baseplate anchor angles are inflexible, but until DSL 2.3, you're just gonna have to design around that. Couldn't you add cat-ears to the back of the bot so you could push the NPC's further back, and then make the chassis thinner from there?

Discussion / 7 changes I'd like to see in DSL 2.3!
« on: August 09, 2016, 02:58:56 PM »
Feel free to add to this list, but I've put in a good 100+ hours into DSL 2.2 now, and here are a few things I'd change to make it better.

1) PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF CRAP, NERF MECHAVORE DISCS AND FRENZY HAMMERS! They're way too overpowered, to the point where it doesn't really make sense to make anything other than hammers and spinners. It's ruining the meta-game.
2) Make Steel armour more weight-efficient, or add another type of armour plating between Titanium and Steel. Hardox, maybe? Having Steel weigh 2x more than Titanium is impractical, and puts it out of bounds for most regular uses. 1.5X would definitely make it more viable, or placing an armament in that space.
3) Make Backlash Wheels work similar to how Techno Destructo wheels work now. Surely, a wider wheelbase would mean more grip? Nope, Guess not. Also, 1-2 more wheeltypes for antweights/beetleweights would be nice.
4) Add a 5-degree variant of the extenders, or of the base extender. I know this is a bit nit-picky, but I love to have all my angles in order. and having to attach a 30 degree extender to a 45 degree one just to get a 15 degree angle is a tad silly. If you don't want to do this, instead, make a swivelable version of the baseplate extender that can only go 45 degrees max either which way so as to prevent it from being used as a wedge. That way, you could keep the current wedge meta, but promote more varied uses of angles.
5) More attachment points for batteries. Right now, Battlepacks and WDP's are the most powerful batteries in the game, simply because they can be fit into a variety of spaces. if you added side attachment points for the larger batteries, and perhaps buffed their electotal, it would make them a lot moer viable, and promote their use.
6) Make unbelted versions of the Perm 80 and Perm 132, as well as an either bigger Perm motor, perhaps a Perm 184. An unbelted variant of the Perm means that you could re-introduce face spinners to the metagame, and also a larger Perm motor means that spinners can be even more destructive. A Dual-Perm 184 gearbox, weighing in at 320Kg's... Phoo, baby.
7) Make more AI components accesible to the average builder. Sure, the Frenzy Hammer and Mechavore Disc are a tad unbalanced, but there are plenty of AI parts that could be used really well in a regular builder's arsenal. I'd love to see Beta Hammers, or Razer's Claw, available as another way to acheive robotic dominance.

And that's it! Any more you can think of, post 'em below, and let me know what you think of this list!

How people create all these amazing wacky things I will never know.

I've got a few other things to show off that are quite a bit more complex than this - really, it's just a matter of spamming as many Mechavore discs or Frenzy Hammers as you can. I'm suprised somebody hasn't made a Frenzy Hammer SNS yet.

So, f*** the meta-game, am I right?

Royd Rage. 798.6, 3 Reinforced Perm 80's running 6 full-size Mechavore discs. Titanium 10, NPC Fast's. Inside are two WP836E's.

Complain.

In a bizarre twist of events, a Perm 80 powering 2 full-size mechavore discs has the same spinup speed and total speed as a Perm 132 powering 3 full-size mechavore discs. Fancy that.

Spam as many mechavore discs as you can, pretty much. Drop the weight of everything else, and fit on 4 discs - double discs, double damage. Steel armour is a massive waste of KG's, at least in terms of armour plating - stick with titanium for now.

Also, use skirt hinges/metal wedges only when they're absolutely nessescary - the two you've used for the ground wedges are fine, but the two for the angled armour... It'd be a lot more weight-efficient to just have them as static wedges.

The steel extenders holding the wedges on are a bad idea. You're best off going with 25x50 DSL bars, or using titanium 40cm skirts.

Techno's aren't as OP as they used to be, pretty much every wheel's balanced now - you're best off using whatever gives you the least ground clearance. You made the right decision now using Twinmags, though - it's only wise to use twinmags if the chassis shape appropriates for them.

Pretty sure you could make that chassis slimmer, also.

I'd need to see insides to give more of a verdict, but that robot should have more than enough battery power with 2 WP836E's - any more than that is overkill, any less is risking the battery power running out too quick.

Because I'm an efficiency builder and DSL 2.2 is structured towards more realistic styles of building with less opportunities for more compact chassis. It's okay for IRL but still lacks a load of options that I think would help it a lot (smaller chain drive motors for drums, better direct axle motors like a stronger Slimbody motor, a hollow drum component so you can make full body drums, plus some little balancing things).

Nonsense. It's possible to build incredibly efficient in DSL2.2 - it's just the "realism" stigma that's attached to it. I've built some incredibly efficient robots in DSL 2.2 - it's just a matter of adapting to the changes. I agree that some components need balancing, though... Looking at you, Mechavore Discs... You too, Frenzy Hammers...

:rage so it is going to be vs fest

VSFest '87 is on!

(hey, it's not my fault that Mechavore discs and Frenzy Hammers are OP AF.)

Feel free to give feedback to this below - I was just thinking that this site could do with a shot in the arm, and here's a few pretty obvious ways to do it.

1 - Don't lurk, get stuck in! Instead of just sitting back and browsing through the threads, really get into it and say whatever you've got to say about the topic.
2 - Promote the site! If you know any robotics/gaming fans that might be into this sorta thing, get them involved!
3 - Set yourself post goals! Instead of just posting whenever, be aware of your posts, and set yourself a goal of how much you plan to post (say, 10 posts a day), and really strive to fill that quota.
4 - Get involved in tournaments! Nothing's better than seeing bots get ripped to shreds, so get into it and submit something, even if it's crap!
5 - Post often! Raises your voice in regards to whatever the thread is! If you've got something to say that's nothing to do with the thread, that's what the Playground's for.

And there you go - 5 seps that you can take to help fan the flames of this site. Have fun!

Half plates no longer work because... something something collision meshes.
Half plates haven't changed at all from DSL 2.1. They are still the same where you can't use them with a minimum height chassis

I know, I'm on about the protection they offer - from what I've experienced, using them as bottom protection is no longer viable, for whatever reason - armour plating is the only thing that seems to work. Test it for yourself, and let me know the results.

Welcome back, broseph.

Razors/Irons are incredibly nerfed by the fact that weapons with normals have DP through the roof. I recommend replacing all the razors with axe heads, and because you (should) have a copy of RA2CF, it should be pretty easy.
Were they really nerfed that bad in DSl 2.2? And why do half plates no longer work?

Yep, much better to use weapons with normals now, except in certain circumstances.

Half plates no longer work because... something something collision meshes.

what the christ are you doing wasting that much weight on steel extenders around the bot that do nothing and having no top/bottom armour

Oh yeah, that's another thing - half-plates covering the bottom of your robot don't work any more. You need to use the new, thicc DSL 2.2 armour plates
