Tournament Archives / Re: BattleBots: Season 2« on: July 16, 2011, 02:06:30 PM »I think the skirt hinge should only be used on the sides of the bot. In a similar way to what the later versions of Panic Attack, Series 4 and onward. If you tried using such a wedge on the front of your bot, then it'd just get caught in the arena, and become damaged. The skirt hinge lets do you exactly what Biohazard did, set a skirt at an angle and prevent it from flexing below a certain point(hard stops) 484

I think the skirt hinge is pretty legitimate for bots like the one on the right in this pic-

Discussion / Re: General thoughts on wheels« on: July 15, 2011, 11:58:32 AM »Sounds interesting. I'd get to work on it myself, but I don't have any clue how to code for RA-2, so I can't be of service. I think it's more a modeling issue than a coding one. Not sure if 3dsm allows easy resizing or if it's something that ends up being a pain. (for example, if I wanted to make a range of diameters in solidworks, I'd just have to change a single number for each size and save as a new name, if there was a way to import the .step files (or any other format solidworks can save models as) I can save with solidworks into 3DSM, it'd take me about an hour to make a ton of wheels) Edit: Looking at it, solidworks can export inventor format files, and 3dsm can import inventor format files. If someone who can make parts wants to help on the 3dsm side, I'd be happy to take a shot at seeing if there's a way to take a solidworks file and massage it into RA2 https://forum.solidworks.com/message/131200 has some useful info on converting. 487
Discussion / General thoughts on wheels« on: July 15, 2011, 10:27:50 AM »
The wheel options in DSL are pretty good right now, but one thing that exists in real combat, but is not prevalent in DSL is the option for different diameters/widths of the same wheel type. You can get the classic Colson in 1-5/8" diameter through 12" diameter in widths of 7/8" to 3" depending on wheel size, banebots is the same, with a smaller range and different grippyness levels. The same diameter/width situation applies to the metal rim/foam tread style wheels used on many larger bots.
I don't know the difficulty level of doing this, but setting up a few of the common wheel types such that you had several diameters/widths, and possibly tread compounds(trading grip for hp) could add a lot of variety to DSL drive systems. 488

DSL TC Showcases / Re: MikeNCR's Legendary Bots« on: July 13, 2011, 04:39:21 PM »How well does it work in practice? Seems to do pretty well, it'll flip all over the place due to how small it is, but it's almost perfectly symmetrical, so it's able to attack just as well when inverted. I thought counter-rotating saws caused it to turn one way? A set of blades spinning results in gyro forces when turning, an equal size/weight/MOI set of blades rotating the opposite way(relative to the other blades) will counteract that force, resulting in a net gyro force of 0 as long as they stay balanced. 490

Tournament Archives / Re: BattleBots: Season 2« on: July 12, 2011, 03:53:02 PM »It went over the top.Ah. But in real life it had a ceiling if I recall. True, however, I recall an incident where Nightmare broke a tooth, which then hit the ceiling and knocked a wrench(iirc) into the audience, and iirc, the tooth ended up either partially or completely out of the box, so it's within the realm of reason that a sufficient impact force would allow a bot to exit the roof of the arena. In RA2 land, the high wall could effectively simulate the difficulty of throwing a real bot through the real roof. 496
DSL TC Showcases / Re: Conraaa's DSL showcase-The stuff I do on the weekends.« on: July 11, 2011, 07:58:12 AM »Could you make a video on how it works? The pistons firing followed by suddenly stopping results in net positive momentum, allowing the bot to navigate via piston. The method dates back to pre-DSL days but is mostly forgotten. Walk This Way and Iron Curtain(posted April 17th, 2009 in my showcase) both use the same basic locomotion concept, however with front and rear facing pistons, it's got full motion control. (no getting stuck in corners) 497

Good match and I think the judges nailed the score. I had damage by a good margin, but didn't do enough to really hamper Thyrus, so it's only a minor lead there, and Thyrus was able to stay much more aggressive.
