Discussion / Re: DSL 3 Beta Improvement Suggestions
« on: May 31, 2013, 12:20:49 PM »
After playing around with DSL3 for a bit last night and creating my first bot, I first want to thank Click for the hard work he's put into this.

As for suggestions, I don't have too many, but I thought of one or two things.

- the Flipper-maker components perhaps being remade to integrate them with the new extenders. (As thick as an extender, double the width and 30cm in length?)
- Either ask permission to integrate existing ones, or add official weightmakers for SHW and UHW classes.
- A skirt hinge flipper motor - I believe one was already made for a Cassius replica (correct me if i'm wrong. But whilst the new piston motors are quite good, there is still no way to get a front-hinged flipper axis close enough to the point of a wedge.

Discussion / Re: Building Styles - A Discussion
« on: May 31, 2013, 12:08:07 PM »
This is hypothetical, but I feel that I do have a part in this conversation. If we were to decide today on categories to put bots into, and then use those to define styles of tournaments, I would come up with 4.

Unrealistic and DSL Standard I would keep the same as in Craaig's post. but I would split 'IRL' into 2 styles, with both sharing the following traits:

- Larger Chassis than DSL STandard/Unrealistic
- Main priority is to be aesthetically pleasing. Therefore more elaborate paintjobs and component selection.

My two definitions of IRL would be as follows:

3) American Style - Bots that are still eye-candy but are generally built to a higher standard. Use of larger and higher quality components and more efficient. Also the use of bot types that are more prevelant/successful in american competitions - Drums, Ring Spinners and large HS/VS, flamethrowers. Other types are seen far less due to enclosed arenas/higher build standards (Flippers, Axes, crushers).

4) British Style - More colourful and appealing to the eye, these are mainly built to look or function a certain way, at the cost of efficiency. Flippers, axes, saws, rammers, generally simpler weapons are more prevalent due to arena styles (OOTAs being possible), and lower build quality than american bots.

So, using those new categories you could define tournaments as "American IRL", where more combat-effective IRL designs would most likely be more successful than British IRL. And "British IRL" would be akin to modern day Roaming Robots, where spinners of any type are generally outlawed, thus focusing on the less effective but more showy bot types.

Needs a supporter, yo.

I am dragonsteincole, and I support Thyrus' plans to use his bot.

2 long grey batts or 3 ants should be able to power it. 2 long greys will last longer though.
Well I have 2 grey and 4 ants, so on the safe side then.

I'm looking at those new flipper motors and Komodo and getting ideas.

First foray into the strange new world of DSL3:

NO idea what to do battery-wise, so I just looked at 123's thread and see what he used in his bots, and went from there. If in doubt, trust a whale.

That obv. is not the final skin for Sir Lance-a-Frog, sorry if I was unclear when I posted the image

This, however, is the final skin for the 4th BB6 'update', SUPER KOMODO

Arms are improved, self-rights, middle spike strip pumps up and down when another bot is on top. Faster, Harder, Better, Stronger.

me vs dsc MW this time my wheels WILL STAY ON
I approve of this message.

That and I wouldn't mind another MW rematch with Infernadecity afterwards, which will probably be the retirement match for Sir Lance-a-Frog.

This is to show a re-worked Sir Lance-a-Frog, but perhaps more to show off a re-texturing of the Practice Arena. Slowly realising i'm going to have to do more than just textures, as the lockers, gas cylinders, floor, lights and roof have a darker tint to them that's not on the texture.

Also as a thought, maybe for the lighter weight-classes where they can easily chuck/throw a bot, the hazards be turned off in future. The heavier classes seem to be less affected by spazzing arena components, whereas they're deciding far too many of the LW and MW fights.

So there's still improvements to be made. Fair enough. Although I have to admit 090901's comment has sorta despressed me a bit. I don't seem to be having much luck with new stuff, and it's been that way for over a year. Revisiting older machines gives me something to aim for at least.

Back with another updated bot...

Back on October 9th, 2010 I uploaded my first bot in this gallery, Ratt-E

Ratta-Two-E followed a little while later, and now, 2 and a half years later, I present Ratt-3

Alex vs. Scrapyard is up.
What happened to Thyrus' LW? Didn't it beat Scrap's?

I'm going to quote this again so it's seen by MassimoV - unless Thyrus pulled out of the LWs, his bot won against Scrap Daddy's in the Prelims.

Love the skirts on ResPAwn. Carbon Copy is cool too, but I miss the tail D:
v5 is a heavyweight robot, it has a tail that acts as a srimech, but I think making it into a HW bot compromises it a lot. I may try to make a HW version of v7 so it runs invertible, but it's a lot harder to self-right with a spinning weapon at that angle - the bot just turns in mid air and stays upside down.

EDIT: DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK BOTS.

Tail that doesn't impede the bot when inverted - HW version (not pictured) was also made by dropping the armour to TiT3, and downgrading a few of the DSL bars and other pieces.

Creativity, oh how i've missed you.
