Discussion / Official Rights to Robot Arena 2
« on: June 23, 2009, 05:50:24 AM »
It would be incredibly hard to accurately port RA2 to other consoles, to the point where the modders of the forum might as well be developing a new game... And even so, RA2 is an intricate, accurate, precision-based game where you need the steady control of the mouse...

Most "smalltime" developers come up with a simple, yet out of the box revolutionary idea. Look at world of goo, simple enough but an amazingly fun and addictive game... Sadly we don't have an idea like that.

EDIT: After rereading HurricaneAndrew's posts, I have come to the conclusion that he doesn't realize a lot of game developers release the source to their old broken games after they've had a good run, as a favor to the community...

Jedi Academy's multiplayer source was released years ago, and JKA put a 10x bigger dent in PC gaming than RA2...

Countless Valve games use the source engine, which is opensource...

The source code of Quake 3 was released, and quake 3 was a HUGE hit for many years.

So yes, expecting Atari to release the source for a broken down pos game like RA2 isn't asking much, despite what you think...

While this is a great idea, i still think it's going to be very, very expensive.

We could ask for how much they would be willing to sell the official rights to us...

The only point of having the rights would be if modders wanted to sell future installments of DSL packaged with RA2 for a profit... If Atari released the source to RA2, we would be able to do just as much with the game as if we had bought the rights... Except usually companies release the source for FREE.

Once again, let me repeat my main point... BUYING the rights to the game will not enable us further in terms of MODDING the game, it will only give modders who decide to develop further installations of RA2 the chance to sell their work for profit, that's it. It's not like they'll give us some magical RA2 developer's kit with a nice GUI along with the game if we buy the rights...

Let me clarify my post once more, in extremely simple wording; The SOURCE to the game would be free, and would let us mod every aspect of it, including the havoc engine. The RIGHTS cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the only advantage to that is that we would also be able to sell whatever people developed in terms of Robot Arena for profit.

But sure, if close-minded members like Naryar want to spout their nonsensical claims and opinions, go ahead... why not take a high school class of standard business first....

No, I don't believe it is still in production. Which is one of the reasons that I think that Atari would let go of the rights to it pretty cheap.

Technically, if we owned the rights to RA2 then we could market DSL (if we wanted to) and there would be no one else to have to give a share of the money to. We would own the namesake of Robot Arena and could eventually make Robot Arena 3.

Really, I think that our modders would be proud to see DSL hit the market as an actual game.

Do you realize how much what you are saying would cost...? and who would legally be defined as the owner? The modders? They would need to register and license a business/company name before even considering buying RA2, let alone marketing DSL... It would take a ridiculous amount of resource, a ridiculous amount of money, and a ridiculous amount of labor...

You would have to get the game legally certified for content, rated, and then you would have to hire and work through a distributor if you wanted the game to hit the shelves... You'd have to pay for decent advertising if you wanted to see any profit from the countless hours of labor you'd need to put in to make a game worth buying, else no one would know about it except the limited fan base RA2 has...

I agree the modders have done amazing things with RA2, DSL is better than the original... But making a full fledged game for profit based off of something that is already being distributed for free isn't going to happen. DSL was made for the community by the community because they wanted to give back, I doubt the modders want to repackage DSL for profit after DSL being free for so long...

Also you can still buy RA2 off of the official website for download, it doesn't matter if it's in production or not, it doesn't cost them more than a dime to host that content and if they can turn a profit of 20$ to keep RA2 alive as long as they can they will...

Releasing the source to what faithful fanbase they have left would not put a dent in their profit, but at the same time would give us everything the community needs to further enhancement of RA2.

Just don't see why in the world a measley forum like this would need to spend tens of thousands of dollars on the rights to a game owned by a nationally renowned gigantic corporation just to obtain the source which should've been released for free in the first place...

I say they would be likely to sell it, because they are a business. So I highly doubt that they would just release it.

Edit: The only problem I see with a petition, though, is that that usually requires signatures. Signatures would be pretty hard to get from 3500 people from all over the world.

Online Petitions do not require a physical signature, only that you verify that you are indeed a real person with an email address and first and last name.

I saw this...

in another thread, and I also saw the thread that moonbear started about the source code, and got to thinking about something. How much money do you think it would take to buy the official and legal rights to RA2 from Atari?

I'm thinking that possibly have our best modders (and anyone else willing to pitch in) get together and maybe buy the rights to RA2. That way we would get the source code, along with everything else that would be needed.

This idea maybe totally insane, because they may want millions for it. But if they could care less about it anymore (which it sounds like they really don't), then they might be willing to let it go cheap.

Just an idea...

Or instead of owning the rights to a worthless franchise like RA2 without a community of game developers/publishers, we could merely request the source code to their obviously broken and outdated havoc physics engine as well as the RA2 executable... which would be released for free.

*I'm still on-topic!* I think the pausing does. Although I've noticed that pausing cuts down on the match loading time, with bots like my 36HS's, they sometimes havok at the start, but only after I've used the pause button. I have to say though, I've never had any troubles balancing my maces without the pause button. For me, they are always exactly where I want them.

Have you checked the collision boxes with f12...?

Seriously hop off Kill's cack ok? If being the brown noise of the community is kool with you its up for grabs alrdy halfway there. @tankcat: It is proof... if you didnt have to click pause the other bot will never glitch at the START of the match. You can even make the bot glitch more if you dely the unpause.

maybe you're just doing it wrong pyscolone.

*On topic* What Pys says does happen to me every so often. Just look at the video Clickbeetle posted of his flail VS in his showcase, as the random havoking happens there too.

But does the pause method contribute to the random havoking? All I'm saying is a lot of mace HS and VS and other bots can't be entered because of the inability to balance them, my tankcat can't even drive properly without being balanced... the pause method fixes this, every time for every match. You can't attribute the havoking to the pausing, there's just no proof...

I have tried it out countless times, that is why I made the thread suggesting we do it in tournaments... I have done it time and time again, I do it before every match and i've never seen havoc explosions except when driving over broken HS motors...

You build bots where all of them NEED the pause button !? This seems to be the case as you think this is some kind of breakthrough in technology. No one cares

seems like a lot of people cared when I first posted the solution, this would be useful to everyone building a mace HS...

I just gave you the idea for that not even 12 hours ago >< and its not really a secret.

Okay,

If it's not a "secret", why isn't it standardized yet? If something so easy that is beneficial to everyone is known by everybody, why don't they use it in tournaments?

Sure, everyone knows about the pause button. But I'm sure a lot of people don't know about the dynamics of the pause button. What you're saying doesn't make sense... if it did, this thread wouldn't need to exist because it would already be true.

Yeah, even though I don't see why there's a huge argument, I don't see why you guys are trying to make this sound real? C'mon, I've insulted 'The Rake' many a time now just to see what happens, but nothing's happened. I'm not taking sides (although this message is probably being concieved as a biased point of view) but I think everyone should calm down.

It's a story.
Jeez, I wonder if anyone got this worked up about Frankenstein back then.

The arguing isn't about whether The Rake is real or not, my posts only tied back to The Rake in my finishing statements... the rest of my posts were to elaborate on why certain members think it's necessary to use insults and derail a thread just because they don't like it. And as far as The Rake goes, maybe moonbear had more faith in this board than he should've... You guys obviously aren't participating and upholding the "feeling" of the thread.

You're pointing fingers saying "I only believe what I see, this is stupid because you're trying to make it real, you're pathetic" etc... Why not participate in the thread? It seems like it would be fun to just jump in, everyone likes a good horror story... but everyone loves a true one.

It is real, so incredibly real I can feel it with every fiber of my being... And besides, what do you care? This is the "off-topic" board, we can post whatever we want.

Also, give me a credible reason as to why this thread is "stupid". Lot's of horror stories operate off of the possibility of actuality, that is what makes them scary... If you already knew horror stories were fake, they wouldn't be scary... Except, in this case... the story is real. Done and done.

By the way, I find it incredibly offensive and frustrating that you would be so careless as to disregard my traumatizing experiences as fake. I know for a fact that my radio did scream on that fateful night, and when I pulled the cord from the wall, the noise continued...

Yeah, sure.

I have scarier things to worry about than a fictional "monster" that you have imagined. Like my own thoughts driving me insane to the point that I will cause harm to myself. It has happened before, and is likely to happen again.

I love how you skipped straight to the last line, and that was the only one you cared to comment on... Did you even read the rest of my post? Or are you just looking to pick fights with me?

And dude, what is up with telling us that you've hurt yourself and are likely to hurt yourself again? Is that honestly called for in this thread? I mean what it seems like is you are trying to do is guilt trip me by saying "I already need to worry about my own thoughts, I've hurt myself and it's likely to happen again..."

I'm just saying, my post was meant to RESOLVE the issues of this thread. Yes, I poked a little fun at you and Naryar at the end of my post, but honestly you had it coming and it's not in bad intent either. It was to keep a tie to the thread while at the same time making a helpful suggestion... And once again, you reply offensively like I've insulted you or threatened you.

If you have a tendency to go insane from your own thoughts, why did you decide to read a "monster" thread in the first place? Honestly, if you're not fit for it there are other boards you can lurk/post in...

Discussion / TOURNAMENT AGOD SUGGESTION
« on: June 21, 2009, 11:26:31 PM »
Alright, as most of you probably know I had a working agod solution for a while there but then (unfortunately) forgot a few of the key steps in doing so.

However, there are a few other quirks of using the pause button that might be of use in AI tournaments.

On local single player matches(matches that do not use LAN/INTERNET) if you pause before you start the round, the round will load instantly and all the bounding boxes will be aligned perfectly with their components, and then you can unpause and the start the fight..

This means that, even if your parts don't line up perfectly in the garage, if you pause before matches and unpause after the match begins your parts will be aligned perfectly.

If pausing before matches became a new tournament standard, I think it would save a lot of headaches for those who have had no luck aligning their bots, yet still want to compete.

Poor programming and faulty game design shouldn't be part of what makes a good bot, so I don't think it would necessarily be unfair to those who have aligned their bot perfectly by themselves.

Just a thought.

OH AND FOR FUTURE REFERENCE I AM REPOSTING THIS BECAUSE MY OTHER THREAD WAS CLOSED, I FIGURED "TOURNAMENT" SUGGESTIONS BELONGED IN THE TOURNAMENT AND CONTESTS BOARD, MY BAD GUYS!!!

At least R0B0SH4RK had the decency to reply nicely to my posts about The Rake towards him... Even after what I said to him in HA's thread, he didn't take my replies in this thread as direct insults, which is not what they were in the first place... R0B0SH4RK had the maturity to reply intelligently with a cool temperament AND keep to the topic of the thread (which I respect, honestly.)

And to Naryar and HA: What is up with you guys? Do you not think R0B0SH4RK can defend himself? Do you honestly think you guys are in the right to call me out on what I say to him if you can't grasp the context of my statements in the first place? If R0B0SH4RK didn't take them the wrong way, then why would you guys turn it into something huge? Just to put me in my place?

Last time I checked, you aren't mods... and if my statements don't concern you (which they didn't, they were directed towards R0B0SH4RK) why do you care? R0B0SH4RK is a big boy, you don't need to protect him. It would be one thing if R0B0SH4RK was on the offensive/defensive, but after it was all said and done he wasn't, there was no conflict.

Honestly, I wouldn't go into detail if I thought you guys could get it on your own but obviously you can't. Apparently Naryar and various other members feel that I'm getting my kicks by attempting to make R0B0SH4RK feel bad...? It was to add to the depth of the thread, I wasn't insulting R0B0SH4RK. In fact he kept ON topic AND added more information while replying to me.

My point is, I've been harsh with words towards R0B0SH4RK in the past, and he STILL decided to reply to my posts positively and maturely, where Naryar (especially) whom I haven't butted heads with at all, and HA decided to call me out on something that wasn't necessary, blatantly derailing the thread and disrespecting all that have participated in it.

Put some more thought into your posts before replying... If you guys kept a positive outlook and looked forward like R0B0SH4RK, instead of getting riled up over things for the wrong reasons, we would have a flame-free forum...

I don't know what else to say, for some reason I don't think my point will get across. You guys CHOOSE how you react to what people say, you could've just as easily replied positively and added to the thread but it appears you had a personal vendetta to call me out like I've been running rampant disrespecting everyone in my path.

I could understand HA giving me a little feedback, but calling me out on being a f--king douchebag wasn't really necessary... I admit I did pick at HA, but only after he gave me the opportunity to by calling me a noob, in which I replied he was a noob and so forth...

Anyways, I have a lot more respect for R0B0SH4RK now, but Naryar and HA... you're both upsetting The Rake.
