Yeah, I've been in my dark place for a while. But I like these article ideas, though. And I still need to read Resetti's submission and proofread it and all that.

As for the cool stuff you guys shared with me, I might turn them into GatorAIDS articles just so they don't go to waste. :)

382
I'll be straight with you. I think support for this (from ComBots' side) has vanished. I guess they must have second-thought the offer. I haven't heard back, and we're about a month to the event and they haven't run my test article nor have I heard back other than "we'll get to it".

So, no I guess. I'm sorry.

Big thanks for the ideas and such so far. This'll really help put some variety in the combat articles. RoboGames does a TON of other events that I can write about but Dave didn't lie to me, he said people largely come for the combat so that's what I'm playing up big time. :) I think between this thread and the random ideas I had for non-combat events I SHOULD be good to go, but if you have more ideas feel free to post 'em up.

I submitted my first article, an introduction to RoboGames, to Dave. It hasn't gone live yet, nor have I heard back. But it's in the queue. :)

So RFS is a gay furry.  :rage

I don't really associate with furries as much as I've led you on to believe. I'm really into dinosaurs and dragons and all that crap, that's about it. I'm just like... really well known in that niche.

you bet your ass (teehee) i'm interested. 8D

Haha, well now here's the big question: Are you crushing on me because "I'm RFS" or is it because you're legitimately interested?

At the risk of sounding incredibly self-absorbed and narcissistic I get the former too often. Not in the scope of being "RFS", but mostly because I'm relatively well known in certain circles of the goddamn furry fandom and I have a number of creepers and unwanted followers who want in my pants solely because I'm popular and not because they care the least bit about my feelings. It kind of hurts. >_>

Honestly, though, I'm not sure if I'm legitimately open about looking for someone right now. Even then, I'd like to find someone with interests similar to mine. :c

e: augh this is awkward :(

Yes, I'm interested in dating men. Is that a problem?

Nope. Just never knew that.

I'm really low key and matter-of-fact about it. :P

You should do it. I fully endorse the endeavor! XD

I only wish I had the means to finish my middleweight from 2002. :P

Hahaha, speaking of wedge bots Dave and I had a quite fun conversation over the phone about wedges. XD Vapor bots too. :P

Tell him to run 30's at Robogames.

Also I'd gladly do an interview with you for this. I've got an impressive record at NERC events. (two 2nd places, three 3rd places, and never finished a tournament with a losing record)

I might go to Robogames if Dave runs 30's and I find money to get out there.

As far as I know, Lightweights/60's are the smallest class he's running in the main arena this year (and beetles/ants/etc in the small one). :(

My own voice is boring, factual, and sometimes mistaken for a British guy, that's why I was concerned that I would hav etrouble fitting in.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, when you write about robots just let the words come naturally. For example, when I was doing some preliminary research on Towering Inferno to write about it for the site I remembered that the creator built the first version in Lego. That's worth mentioning. Most people use some form of CAD software to fine-tune and measure out parts. This guy used Legos. Just from having this fact and comparing it to how other drivers design and build their robots you can already see how the humor is starting to form. Legos are for kids, it's ridiculous to build a test model of a BATTLEBOT in it. From there the only point is coming up with an appropriate way to present the information that lines the reader up for a punchline/quip, deliver the punchline, and go back to telling about the fight.

Humor in graphical form is like a line graph. You start at the bottom with information. This can be preliminary story or simple background info so the reader becomes familiar enough with the subject to understand what is being talked about. Then the line curves up with the build-up. You mention something that isn't inherently funny, but strange, like an observation or an additional fact that seems out of place. The line hits its apex and you make a joke at the expense of the odd-ball fact/thought. Then the line curves downward as a follow-up joke or funny statement is made (optional) and the reader goes back into getting some additional information to prepare themself for the next joke. Lather rinse repeat. :P

>unsure if incest joke is appropriate on a site whose title is an AIDS joke
YOU CRAZY BRO XD

Basically, unless it is just blatantly and tastelessly racist, homophobic, or simply hateful it'll fly. GA is snarky and we nit pick and make fun of things that are stupid, kitschy, or strange whether it be a TV show, a toy, a video game, a person, a website, or anything else. If they act a fool they should be ready to hear from someone who wants to take the piss outta them. :)

You can try to emulate an existing style if it makes you comfortable and it's a style you're used to, or you can have your own voice.

To address the topic of the thread, I have an incredibly poor opinion of the United States. If I were able to apply for citizenship in Canada, I'd have moved there a long time ago. My ex-boyfriend lives in Canada, if things had worked out I'd have been able to live there. :( Oh well.

Skimmed it a bit, thought it was humorous.

How the heck is Ziggo's builder a closet-furry?

The guy loves his cats and lives in San Jose (furry capital of the world), therefore he's a closet furry.

RFS, would it offend you if I took a stab at writing the 7 most one sided Robot Wars Fights? Not for posting on your site, just for fun and distributing to friends.  I've just been sitting at my computer and writng stuff and I really like how it's coming together.

Be my guest! I've got my hands tied with this sudden job at ComBots so I won't have a lot of personal time to write non-RoboGames articles for a while XD

If the article comes out well I'd be happy to cross-post it to GatorAIDS under your name for you. :)

That's fine and dandy. I read Cracked for Seanbaby's column. I've read everything he's written for almost a decade now. Would be nice if he wasn't on Cracked all the time, but whatever. I enjoy his style and Cracked doesn't edit that out because he's a columnist. I'm simply not fond of Cracked's editing standards and practices and I do not wish to participate with them anymore.

Hah. US will not conquer the world, even if that conquest is cultural and therefore is much easier than a military conquest. It will fall before doing that, as all large empires have.
You just jelly that France hasn't been badass since Napoleon.
hah. I care much more about my OWN badassness than france's.
Unfortunately, France is so un-badass that simply being french lowers your badass rating by at least 10 points.

My ancestry is French. Not cool bro. :c

So here's the word on the street, for the next few months I will be working with ComBots (RoboGames, ComBots Cup) doing both editorial coverage and real-time live event coverage with them. The real-time stuff is pretty cut and dry, I'm a hosting personality and I just do what comes naturally. The other side of the job, however, is to write about the events specifically. That's where you guys come in.

Dave Calkins, the event coordinator, knows you guys exist. He is aware of this community, and the builders are aware of Robot Arena 2 believe it or not. I asked. You guys know bots, you guys live and breathe bots. So do I. Let's pow-wow for a second and talk about what YOU would be interested in reading, hypothetically, about robotics. The aim of the articles is to be funny and snarky, but to also have an informative spin to them to get people to come to the event.

I've got to be putting out two of these articles per week until the RoboGames event in April, where I then won't get to relax and will instead of live blogging and commentating and all of that good stuff. I've got a lot to do.

The articles must be RoboGames-centric. There's a big emphasis on interviewing, so I'm thinking on perhaps doing one interview and one feature each week, that way it'll be balanced out between informative and more informal and entertaining. Here's what I had in mind:
- The most one-sided fights (taking a page straight from my recent BattleBots article)
- Most memorable robots?
- Best one-hit knock outs? -or- Most brutal knock outs?
- Most inventive/best engineered robots?
- Evolution of (name of robot that has competed numerous times and perhaps even at non RoboGames events)
- Oldest/legendary robots still active today?

I'm going to have access to the RoboGames library of content from zero hour to present day, and I realize there's not a whole lot out there that the public (you guys) might be aware of, so pardon me if I'm asking you to take a swing in the dark with ideas. RoboGames covers combat and a number of other popular robot events, you can check out exactly what they have at robogames.net and draw some conclusions from there. One thing Dave said he was unhappy about with the Science Channel special was the lack of coverage of non-combat events, so I am definitely going to be in on that, but I'm really going to focus primarily on the combat since, as he put it, "that's still what sells tickets".

These articles have to be something specific, but not too specific or else I'll risk alienating the audience, and that's bad. :P The whole purpose of my job is to get people to come to this show, and if I fail at that, then my ass is fired. XD Dave has turned to ME to get people to come to his event after a professional PR campaign as failed. So I have to outwork and outdo an actual PR firm with this. So, you guys live bots. What would YOU read, and what kinds of articles would really interest you and your friends to be passed along to others to get them to come to an event such as this. Basically, knowing what you all collectively know, what would you be interested in seeing?

The payoff for helping me out is a truck load of robot articles and editorials about the sport and additional stuff from RoboGames (not everything they do is combat so I'll have sumo and other coverage).

Share some ideas, let's brainstorm. XD

Where's Nightmare vs Son of Wyachi....?

Nightmare was cool, that's probably why.

hm.

Great article though.

That's not really one-sided. Both Nightmare and SoW are incredibly well-built and formidable machines. The robots outlined in my article were pretty crappy overall, and yes that includes Snake. It might have looked gorgeous, but it fought like a burlap sack of kittens in a river.

No RFS you need to write for cracked. The style you write damn near perfect to the way the articles on there are done, and heck, they'll actually pay you for it..

Hell no. I'm not going to write for Cracked. I'm tired of them giving me the runaround with things and honestly I'm not signing exclusivity rights of my work over to an online magazine that time and time again does nothing but pander to the lowest common denominator of men.

Hey, look RFS, these guys wrote about you! http://www.suicidebots.com/category/robot-combat/

They offered me a job as well, but I had to turn it down because I'm not at a point where I'd be able to take their offer and work at it. If I were 16 or so I'd jump on it, but the time/money ratio was a little off, which is understandable because the site doesn't make much in ad revenue.

Their parent company, ComBots LLC, though, hired me.
