It reminds me of 8-bit videogame music (but less ear raping). While chiptune can be quite ear-raping, there are some songs which are just lovely. If you have a few minutes of eartime to spare, check out this. It was composed for a C64 SID. Oh, and if you want to hear some ear rapery (28 minutes of it), listen to this. You have to be a hardcore chiptune fan to like it.

It's not really the fact that the image is lightened, but because of the bloom / gloss effect you applied creating an excessive pseudo-HDR effect. Id you darken that it's gonna look like crap, unless you mess around with the curves, and even then it won't look good since bloom/HDR is applied locally (usually over a 7x7 grid). If I were you I'd find a version before you applied that effect. EDIT: case in point, the second image looks like crap.
