Discussion / DSL 2.0 Sneak Peeks!
« on: May 20, 2005, 10:03:45 PM »
Yes it's true... you can see a glimpse of what's going to be in the mysterious DSL 2.0.

One of the things to be included in DSL 2.0 is all new AI bots (this is why you haven't seen any new bots from me or FB - we've been busy with these!).  Remember the stock AI?  The really horrible bots that come with the game that have always been beat up on and ridiculed?  Well, they're BACK in DSL with some really tough bots, and they're hungry for some revenge

One new bot will be posted on a weeklyish basis (possibly with some other stuff thrown in too).

I'll start the sneak peeks with Red Zone's new lightweight Scout (same name but new design).  I'll tell you that it's a flipper, and a powerful one, but I'll leave the rest up for you to discover on your own when DSL 2.0 is released.

No.  As long as the .txt and .gmf files have the same names (which they do), the components on the bot will just be updated.  It will still work.

Or there's mega-zooming (Firebeetle discovered this).

Go to the bot overview and then zoom in as far as possible.  Wait for a couple seconds, then go to Parts (it may take a few tries to get it to work).  You'll be zoomed in farther than you can normally go when you're adding parts, so you'll be able to more precisely place components.  Just don't rotate your bot at all or else it will zoom back out.

Mine aren't.  Polycarbonate goes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, aluminum goes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, etc.  What do other people have?

Huh?

My extenders are all the right weight.  Polycarbonate is 2kg/20cm, aluminum is 3kg/20cm, and titanium is 4kg/20cm.  Are you sure your game is installed right?  Or is it mine that's messed up (even though it's actually correct)?

Drive defensively or build a tank. :)

I've tried that... Not very easy, especially since the original cannon is too big, and Lu-Tze's are too small to look like a tank's.

By 'tank', I think he just means heavily armored.  Like put armor plates on your bot to protect the chassis - good advice.

btw that was some bump.

Well you can't usually expect to make it through a fight without losing any teeth.  To make them stay on better, pretty much all you can do is use more durable teeth, or position them strategically (like in a wedge or near armor plates).

Late reply, but Drumblebe3 is now on the bot exchange.  Since the other 2 were too.

Meh, no bots posted here for a while, here's some battle shots of the Abominations.

Didn't see that you edited that post.  Nice bot, looks pretty nasty, but it looks like some bots could easily get around to the side of your disk where you can't get a good solid hit on them.  If you look at my Abomination bots, you will notice I used snowplows or angled skirts to make it so the only part of my disk that can be hit is the edge.  If you use something taller and wider than a small wedge that bot will be a lot better.  But it will also be less original I suppose.

Nice bots.  Suggestion for Evil Streak: replace the YU hammers with the other 25kg hammers.  They are more durable and more powerful than the YU hammers that are available to the player.

Welcome.  The next tournament will probably be the RFSHQ tournament #2, which will open once the middleweight champion is decided in tournament #1.

Tis cool.

Looks great for tabletops.  Could use a better name though.  I like "Open Wide" better than "Open Jaws of Doom".

OH I thought he meant the That Darn Dustpan! replica that is downloadable from my website was blue.  Now I get it.
I have been on MSN but I have never seen you.
And it isn't possible to make a 180 degree burst motor; I've tried.  The closest thing to it is the Hammer Motor in Firebeetle's component pack.

Um... practice?

A small chassis helps too, and a beefy weapon motor.

Assorted various bots.  Decawhirl is a beetleweight (my planned entry for rfshq tournament 2), Kilowhirl II and Corrupted Abomination (my planned entry) are lightweights, and Megawhirl IV and Twisted Abomination are middleweights.

Twisted Abomination has a Perm 132 (no I don't mean 80 - it's a 90kg 132) running the weapon - really nasty and good for tossing bots airborne-, 1 orange battery, slimbody drive, and aluminum armor.  Megawhirl IV is powered by an Etek (lots o' spikes does lots o' damage), 2 red battlepacks, and has aluminum armor and Astroflight drive.  Kilowhirl II is powered by a Perm 80 - pretty darn powerful for a lw - and has 1 red battlepack (runs out fast) and astroflight drive.  Corrupted Abomination has 2 red battlepacks, plastic armor, and Astroflight drive.  Decawhirl has 1 red battlepack, a magmotor, aluminum armor, and Astroflight drive.

Use the extra armor plating components like skirts(these are my favorite), snowplows, etc. or improvise by using FBS panels or DSL bars for armor.  I have found that bots with unarmored fronts tend to die fast unless they have a mean spinner to keep bots away from the chassis.

I think I will be posting a couple lw's, mw's and a bw pretty soon.
