Think it's there for space(althrough it doesn't give much and might make the snapper2's vunerable, unless that position was wanted to have a wider attack hitbox). So there's usually a Nifty inside that Snapper II with a control board inside the Nifty on top of the Snapper II ? Thanks for the screenshots. 343
Site News and Feedback / Re: How to make the site more active - 5 steps I propose.« on: August 11, 2016, 05:48:06 PM »
I feel like frezal and playzooki are a bit too harsh here:
The steps as they are currently written do allow for bad things, but refining them you can get to this: 1. If you check a few members histories you will quickly find out that they've been lurking this place for some time, same can happen to new and old members where you simply check stuff but don't actually comment(even through you could) or start building bots. Doing said thing can greatly increase the activity(in my view it doesn't need to be insanely active, but this place can be a bit dead at times). 2. Of course you wouldn't put this into everyone's face, and attracting so many new people to this would be bad as well, but I'm sure there would be a few people out there that would enjoy this game and perfectly fit into this forum. 3. It's not really about spamposting and posting useless stuff but to get over the "I could post here but nah". 4. Again, not directly joke bots but one shouldn't think that they need the perfect bot to enter a tournament, especially now I'd say there are easier chances to advance and people try out different designs, so you should feel free to do so too. 5. Just being active in the forum in general can lead to other members seeing activity and starting to post more. 344
General Support / DSL 2.2, glitch with the King of the Hill Lumazone Arena?« on: August 11, 2016, 05:02:07 PM »
So I was playing a not that successful round of King of the Hill in the Lumazone arena, won round 1 but lost round 2.
Started working on a new bot and then this happened: ![]() And after clearing the King of the Hill arena in an event: ![]() (note, the block holding the Prize didn't even appear, also that thing falls through the floor if you touch it) 345
General Support / Re: Game crashes when making new team, long loading times.« on: August 11, 2016, 04:52:50 PM »I've tried R01's fix, and it didn't work. I really need help with this, I'm at risk of losing month's of work.Well it wasn't really a fix and idk if I could even try to load the file in my RA2, given that I don't have the teams. The bots can be saved if that's what worries you the most, they can be found in the teams folder. What happens if you rename the teams folder and add the one from a clean RA2? Does the game allow adding stuff then? 346
DSL TC Showcases / Re: DemonOfTomorrow's Deadly(ish) DSL Showcase« on: August 11, 2016, 12:52:54 PM »Was going to say that. These 2 'bots are designed to go together and one of them is a drone attempt! Meet the deadly duo, Dragoon and Flying Knife! You have to be the first person to make a drone IRL bot. I approve. Personally I thought about doing one as well for the Warrior Clan replica that I'm working on, however I rather would've liked to somehow make it fly via motors instead of having that huge hovercraft(who I didn't think would still be in DSL). Maybe Click could add a mini hovercraft to DSL 2.3 with the rule that this thing can only be used up to 100(or 150?) kg support drones and not main bots? 347
General Support / DSL 2.2 Obstacle Course Crash« on: August 11, 2016, 11:24:42 AM »
For some reason the Obstacle Course works perfectly fine in 2.1 but crashes in 2.2.
I did download DSL 2.2 again just now, and it still happens on that downloaded version. Anyone else having those problems or knowing what changes were done to the arena in patch 2.2? 348
Stock Showcases / Re: R01's Showcase Thread« on: August 11, 2016, 09:21:45 AM »
Well, I originally wanted to fix the drive problems as well as the srimech(bot firing the popup spikes if wedges get stuck, firing both at the same time doesn't work well) before doing this, but since I do tournaments for fun that's no issue :P
That was a close one, didn't know who won the last one at first. If two more Razors of OA3 connected it would've finished that fight. Both bots had different designs with OOA3 having more range(and being more trigger happy) and razors while Glitch had them closer together. Odd music choice but whatever. Funny enough, Badger's AI line uses the one from OA3 but that one's from a different bot. Originally I was a bit worried about single wedge designs. If bots are small enough and drive perfectly straight they could get under it. Anything else will cause wedges to be stuck in the worst case, but it looks like the speed causes the bots to get flipped which could be a issue with the srimech(well shown in round 2), think the bot is just too light/doesn't have any heavy points on the front so it overflips like that. Many bots seem to have a similar srimech so I wonder if I should really worry about it. Funny enough the beginning was basically how Tastes like Spakle almost lost against Papyrus Bike, and looking at it, my Popup seems to fit into the R4 popup category, except that it's MW and less focused on weapons. 349
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars 2016 Discussion Thread« on: August 11, 2016, 09:18:51 AM »"...we fitted our Anti Spinner Weapon - but the Hypno boys raised an official objection, and we were prevented from using it, as it was viewed according to the rules as a defensive addition rather than an offensive weapon..."I remember reading about that as well, however there's an issue with that. Before the finals, when the producers made such a big drama about the frame, the judges did mention that all configurations got checked when Tornado signed up, so it was allowed back then. That and the "no defensive addons" rule only being added in Series 7 is what don't really fit into that. Further, in Series 7 they removed the frame and only had the spinner(which never got used, only the first battle would've been a good situation but it was apparently low on battery power). They had to fight something with a zero ground clearance wedge and skid steering which meant that they would point the wedge at them all the time, making it basically impossible to outdrive them, if Razer didn't have the skid steering however, this would be a completely different story. Anyways, Storm2 should have good chances for the 2016 reboot, but something just tells me that they are one of those teams that didn't have enough time and will lose for some reason early on in the tournament. 350
Modifications / Re: Replacing models in DSL?« on: August 11, 2016, 08:07:34 AM »I've already said it once and will say it again, just do that thing already :P Blender is probably the best free 3d modelling software you can get and quite a lot of people use it from what I've heard, it's the thing right next to 3ds max(and I guess a few other big ones) and having anything that allows people to do custom components without having to pay for 3ds max would definitely open up modding for more people. However I've heard that Serge is working on something new which should allow us to do stuff without 3ds max and import the original components back.Correct - I was thinking of creating a very crude Blender exporter. iKa - what is you typical workflow / software stack (a.k.a. can you do/learn Blender)? Quote Maybe someone could try to see if the ENB Series mod works on it, never bothered to do so since I don't mind the graphics that much.Is it possible to have functioning shaders in the game that cast shadows and do reflections and such properly? Is this game even compatible with the newer havok engine? This uses pretty old DX - and that's as far as my DX knowledge goes (sorry, I'm an OpenGL person due to the platforms I work with/on). I'm pretty sure someone more experience with WinAPI/DX hacking could chime in on how possible is it to hack around old pipelines in video games. Edit: quickly tried it and it didn't seem to work. 351

Can we see the insides of the first one? I think you have another burst motor in there that allows for it to work as a front hinged flipper?
As for the second, was going to ask how that works, but is that really better than building a wammer instead? 352

Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars 2016 Discussion Thread« on: August 11, 2016, 07:05:06 AM »Those where not their wifesTrue: Quote In actual fact, the Widow's Revenge team were NOT related to Team Razer at all- they just made the story up when they saw they were in the same heat as them, Team Razer agreed to go along with it, and when one of their members (Jenny Smith) actually fell ill, Vincent Blood's girlfriend Emily stepped in as a substitute for them to help with the charade. Yeah, it's all a big lie, but an entertaining one.Think this was also the only time where Razer ended up winning a fight but fell into the pit. While this one was ok, I didn't like Series 5 and 6 for the direction they were heading in, first Philippa, later Craig, talked teams down and interviews only happened after they reached the second fight and then there was all this fake drama stuff from Extreme. So I know we've moved on, but I need to weigh in here re: Tornado's frame. I finally saw the match again last night (I had forgotten about it).True, but after having their robot beaten two times the same way they were most likely tired of it and wanted to get something against it, since you can't really outdrive skid steering(see my post for more info), and seeing how all Razer fights in Series 5 and 6 were the same I'm happy they did, also was totally in the rules and used before this so that's all fine. As for the end, if they got the Hook off of the Frame then they would've won, I can see why that rule is there, else a bot could simply hold one over a pit and have that count as defeated, but it was really close, think if the match went on for another minute or so they would've had it. Since we're already taking about Hypnodisc, you probably remember when Tornado wanted to use their anti spinner tyre weapon. Well, recently the Hypnodisc team did a Ask Me Anything on Reddit, turns out they didn't think that it would fit the sportsmanlike competition and Tornado agreed to not use it after that, so it was totally fine by the rules and they decided to be nice guys, going for the scoop instead. 354

Haven't posted here in almost two weeks.
First we have Your Best Dream's final version ![]() The people's choice entry and 5th/6th place! Oh and Generic Spinner got 3rd, however I'm not too happy with that since it was mostly added to fill up slots. Think it's best to explain the little story behind this bot: As for upgrades, I'm thinking about adding a second set of plows so that those last longer. If lucky they can stop a spinner so they won't be gone in two hits. the side protection can be nice, but sadly the one on the back(which I thought wouldn't be needed) later caused it to lose(to be fair the bot was already on the ground so I doubt it would've been too long until it's out). I'm also surprised that noone complained about it spinning downwards(which was done so that the weapons last longer against popups and spinners). Now for new bots: ![]() Orbital Launcher MK I, a prototype. If Starcore bots start to be immune against everything else then I might as well start chucking them out of the arena. Sadly, it looks like that rear hinged burst motor burst piston combos don't work very well(think it has to do with front hinged pushing the pistons, giving them more speed as well how front hinged flippers require less stronger motors/power to flip stuff, possibly because the balance of the other bot is already a bit off), it ended up sucking so bad that I got the old Atomizer versions out of retirement and tried them against a few v3 bots. They couldn't throw them well out of the arena either but still seemed to do a better job than this thing. Expect to see future launcher experiments. Before I post the next one, I'd like to say that I'm aware of the popup challenge, it, together with at least two other popups are planned for later(and were originally supposed to come before this). Glitch in the Matrix ![]() Uses parts of the bot file as skin similar to System Flailure(I just found this to be such a great idea that I wanted to use it and didn't have a skin idea for this bot) With this popup(which originally started with trying to get the atomizer in a better shape for popup weapons) I tried to go for a few different things than weapons, which gives it the following pros and cons: + 2 wedges + wide chassis(less of a target for HS and other bots since they can't get the sides) + flat wedge + zero ground clearance - only 4 razors - only 1 supervolt(then again that seems to be common for MW?) Overall I like it so far, only need to fix the problem with the AI shuffling around(which also happens on Your best Dream, guess single Zteks are a bit fast for turning) And then there's this: Flailtastic ![]() Again, takes a similar pun from System Flailure and Epic Flail, Click can freely use this one's name as I don't think it would be great to give a non flail hammer that name. This gets kinda close to the Shell Spinner in Stock design that I once had in mind(which I still haven't done but seems possible now), originally wanted to keep the little secrets until it appears in a tournament but thought I might as well show it now. This will most likely need a rebuild to be competitive as the chassis(which currently holds 2x Snaper2's, one Black and two rad's) gets too much to the outside. Weapons probably break off rather easily as well, so dunno if this design would even work. I did have a bit of spare weight so I tried building a flag out of extenders to help human players with the direction. 357
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars 2016 Discussion Thread« on: August 10, 2016, 02:17:56 PM »Wait R01 isn't skid steering what literally every robot except Killerhurtz used?As far as I know that's tank steering what you mean(also a few other robots, Onslaught and Demolishor, think there were a few other smaller entries as well, used car steering.) Skid Steering basically allows a "what if the wheels on the back were 90 degree rotated" kind of situation. Killerhurtz did have fans on their bot at one point which basically allowed it to move across walls. Terrorhurtz and Beta were supposed to have that at one point but in the end it didn't work out so that's why they got magnets, but that's a different story. I'm not a roboteer or have looked much into that but the RW wiki mentions the following for Groundhog(Series 2 bot by Firestorm): Quote Each wheel was powered by a cordless drill motor, and driven by a gearbox from an angle grinder. The rear wheels were unique "omniwheels," tyres embedded with rubber rollers that allowed them to skid sideways. This type of wheel would later be used by Razer, and several others after Robot Wars ended.I do know what omni wheels are and based on this screenshot, Razer had them ever since Series 3(but never used them that much until later in it's more successful series in Series 5 and 6): I remember Razer using it well in some battles to the point where other bots couldn't do anything but drive up it's scoop. Don't have time to find all those battles but I did quickly create this gif: 358
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars 2016 Discussion Thread« on: August 10, 2016, 09:29:12 AM »What? Razer didn't drive into the pit, the match ended with Tornado almost over the pit but still held by Razer because they couldn't get that hook off.Vs Tornado in the series 6 (?) grand final, when tornado was using it's bullsh** cheat ring of aids. And I thought we were done with this where people know that the frame was completely allowed by the rules(and used in the US series, together with a spinning disc instead of bar, before Series 6) and that they would've been out if all wheels were over the pit and Razer wasn't holding them(unlike to what JP said, part of the reason why I wasn't too happy to see him return. The Tornado team even mentioned that in Extreme2 when they were fighting Razer in the world championships). If anything was cheap and should've been banned by the rules then it would be skid steering, because there's nothing cheaper than that, facing the robot with the front all the time and basically making good driving useless. Only way to really get past that would be a good zero ground clearance wedge, which would most likely lead to a flipper bot, in which case you'd need to get multiple flips in and if you fail to get under the wedge once you've basically lost already. 359
Real Robotics Discussion / Re: Robot Wars 2016 Discussion Thread« on: August 10, 2016, 08:15:27 AM »So i just watched the first episode of the 2016 version, and Razor again throws himself in while trying to put another bot in the pit. really his curse hahaAgain? don't think that happened before. Also speaking about spoilers, should they even be used in this thread at that point? I feel it leads to people overlooking way too much posted stuff. That would make the arena temporarily warm but sadly wouldn't work for the Co2 bottles that are inside the robots and already cool from the workshop. 360
Stock Showcases / Re: Onnaj's Showcase (stock)« on: August 10, 2016, 08:12:09 AM »Ah oke i had no idea that in tournaments the ais does the work XD i feel oldskool nooby haha.Wow, now we're talking, that thing has even more Razors than I originally suggested. Only big issue I see is that you're using square extenders(probably because they're easier to rotate, I recommend the movepixel script for that instead) those are much heavier than the normal extenders and don't have any bonuses to them(if anything it looks like those break more easily as hammers for some odd reason). I see a way to save more space if you don't mind the robot being not 100% symmetrical, basically this: EXEXEXEXEX PC PC PC instead of using a T connector, a rotated extender is used instead(I hope that works with the rotations) since those don't have a point in the middle either the left or right one is used(in this case the left one where the E should be) this means it's a bit longer to the right if placed in the middle, however that's exactly what we want so that we can place the P(Piston) and C(Co2 canister) right next to eachother and hopefully still keep the robot mostly symmetrical. I guess you added the spike in case stuff breaks off or if the robot gets flipped upside down? I'd recommend positioning the piston in the middle so that it has the same height difference when being upside down. Pole Spikes(unlike Iron Spikes) have normals, this means that they only hit with their tip and not the entire spike. Don't really have much to say other than you can export your bot skin template(and then create the skin in paint.net or any other image editing software) to create your own bot skins and I forgot to mention Slipperbottom wheels in my last post, they're sometimes used for bigger invertible robots. Your bot is starting to look good. |
