Ah crap, that was Death that said he had the DL version, not you.  I got confused.

In that case I haven't the slightest idea why your game is crashing.  Did you click "Yes to all" when you installed DSL?

For the graphics, I made a fix for DSL.  You don't need to reinstall to apply it.  Look in General Discussion.

Discussion / nVidia UI fix for DSL 2.0
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:42:51 PM »
ACAMS pointed something out that should probably go here.  The nVidia fix won't work on the downloaded RA2 because of the dumb invisible UI differences.  If I ever find out what's different with the UI, I'll make a fix for the DL version.

It's the Ocean Platform.  Something is wrong with the .py file methinks.

It's just an aluminum extender, no more than 18 kgs.

That 1 mm plastic is a killer.  If any bots get under you, you're toast.  Maybe you can take a page out of Grog's book and use a polycarbonate skirt on top, and use the extra weight to get at least 1 mm aluminum.

Apparently the CD version doesn't work with the downloaded version.  I didn't think it would, but it was worth a shot since I couldn't find any differences between the two.  I'm making a no-graphics version you can use until I figure out that darn downloaded version.

So, apparently the current version of DSL 2.0 doesn't work with the downloaded version.  The difference between the two versions must be more subtle than folder and file names.

FOR NOW, I think I'll make a version that doesn't include the new graphics.  The game should still be playable for DL users.

Once (and if) I figure out how to make the graphics work on the DL version, I'll upload that.

The no-graphics version should be up soon.

OK, here is the COMPLETE nVidia UI fix.

Sadly I don't think it will fix the Mars Base arena, as that doesn't even work on nVidia cards below 6000.  But it should fix all the graphical issues on menus and such.

You know what, Firebeetle actually already has a big, shiny steel ball made.  There's definitely going to be a 2.1 patch for DSL, so who knows, we might throw it in.

Aha!  So, all that's needed to fix the graphics for nVidia cards is this:

In the .gib files, look for the [Image] tags like this:

_Tiling false
_Filename \mainmenu\ra2_logo.tga
_BufferWidth 0 0 0 0
_Size 512 1 76 1
_Alpha true
_Filtering 0
_ForeColor 1 1 1 1
_Name
_Position 0 0 0 0
0 0 0.465732 0.5836325

All that's needed to fix the graphics is to change those last four numbers so they read:

0 0 1 1

instead of messy decimal numbers.  These new UI files would even work on non-nVidia 6000 cards.  I think I'll include the new .gibs in a v2.1 patch.

In the meantime though, I'll get working on the rest of the .gibs and upload the full fix.

Ugh... that's serious.  I'd say it was a virus, but since it only happens in DSL (it does only happen in DSL right?), it can't be.  Must be something wrong with some .py file.

Maybe if I upload all my .py files?  Something essential might be missing from the download.  I'll get them up soon.

Oh, and CD or downloaded version?

General Support / Game crashing...
« on: August 26, 2006, 06:56:35 PM »
For the component descriptions, try decreasing your game resolution.  Some of the graphics don't work at really high resolutions for whatever reason.

I have no idea about the menu button crash.  So it's only after you exit the bot lab?  Is it any menu button that crashes, or just on specific screens?

It could be a problem with the UI.  Supposedly that is the difference between CD and downloaded versions.

Try copy/pasting the teamhq folder in your UI folder from your stock RA2 into your DSL RA2 and see if it works.

Also, can you use the Rookies bots in battle?

Nasty-looking bot there.  I made one like it once.  Hint: Try attaching the beater bars so they're flush with the shell.  It will be nearly unstoppable.

What kind of armor and batteries?

Now I'm impressed.  Of course, long undercutting blades ARE Lock Nut's biggest weakness.  Can that bot beat... say, Razorback?

I have an idea how to fix the graphics for nVidia users, but I'm not 100% sure it works.  I've uploaded a modified mainmenu.gib that will *hopefully* fix the graphics on your main menu.

Download it here

Please post if it works/doesn't work.  If it works, I'll get started on the other graphics right away.

Edit:  The complete version is now finished.  Get it here.

All the AI, or just some of them?  If it's just some tell me which ones.

Also CD version or downloaded version?

For the parts doubling up, that is a side effect of the CFZ that happens if you install over v1.2.  All doubled parts should be identical and should both work the same.  To get rid of them, you need to delete their .txt files in your Components folder.

If your graphics are messed up:

Download the nVidia UI fix for DSL 2.0.

If you have the downloaded version of RA2:

Download the no-graphics version of RA2, to be released soon.  This is a hopefully temporary solution until I figure out how to make the graphics work for the downloaded version.

The following is copied from the Readme file for DSL 2.0, for your convenience.

Installation instructions:

Note: You will need WinRar (http://www.rarlabs.com) to extract the files.

1. OPTIONAL: Make a backup copy of your Robot Arena 2 folder.  Do this if you want to keep a stock version of RA2.  Rename it to something other than Robot Arena 2, such as "RA2 Stock", and move it out of the Infogrames folder IF you reinstall in step 2.

2. Obtain a fresh (no modifications, such as AI packs) copy of Robot Arena 2.  You may have to reinstall.

3. Apply the official 1.2 patch from http://www.robotarena.com, if it isn't already applied.

4. OPTIONAL: If you made a copy of your stock RA2 earlier, move it back in the Infogrames folder.

5. Open the folder called "dsl2" that was extracted from the .rar file.

6. Go to Edit>Select All, then Edit>Cut.

7. Go to C:\Program Files\Infogrames\Robot Arena 2 and go to Edit>Paste.

8. A window will pop up asking if you want to overwrite files.  Select "Yes to all".

FAQ:

Q: Do I need to install DSL v1.0 and 1.2 before 2.0?

A: No.  DSL 2.0 is meant to be applied to a modification-free version of RA2.  However, you can just as easily apply it to DSL v1.2.

Q: Do the new updated stock AI replace the old replica AI?

A: No.  The old AI is still available.

Q: How do I use the special parts on the replicas?

A: They are hidden because they are either too good or too useless.  If you really want them, try entering 'cheatbot2' as your robot name - but remember, that's cheating!

Q: My bot doesn't seem any stronger even though it's supposed to have 6x armor strength!

A: The armor isn't automatically updated on your bots; you need to reapply it to get the extra strength.

___________________________________________________________________

Known Issues:

If you apply armor and then go back to the armor menu, it will show you as having 1 mm armor.  If your bot is near 800 kgs, it won't let you reapply or upgrade your current armor until you apply 1 mm or lighter armor.  It does not affect the game, it is merely an annoyance.

Flamethrower weapons only work while you are driving.

Using tank treads will require you to reverse your robot's controls.

The Mars Base arena still doesn't work on nVidia video cards.

Some graphics may not display correctly on 640x480 resolution or resolutions greater than 1024x768.  800x600 resolution is recommended.
