Actually on further reflection there might be something I can do to help here.  You can make the sky color blue by adding this to the py:

        plus.setBackColor(0.7,0.8,1)

Just a simple tweak that should make it look more realistic.

I just sent you an entry.  It's a combination wedge/shell spinner called Megawhirl V.  I'm not expecting to win, but it's a fun design.

Wow, this has to be the coolest, craziest, most elaborate arena you've yet made.  Or that anyone's yet made.  If some guy posted a thread called "Arena idea" and described this arena, I'd say it's impossible.  The landmines alone would make for an amazing arena, but the Enterprise and cruise missiles just take the cake.

If you have any coding questions I'll still try to answer them, but looking at this it seems you've moved beyond my skill level.  Great work both of you.  Can't wait to try this one out.

Stock Showcases / Resetti’s Replicas Returns

Nice replicas.  It's too bad that most of them are hampered by RA2's chassis limitations.  Still you did well with what's possible.  I like A-kill and Atilla the Drum (though I thought the issue with sideways chassis bots was with turning, not driving).  What did you use for the wheels?  If you use non-wheels like discs, it will be more controllable, although possibly less pretty.

Sorry about that.  I would have said something, but I actually never intended to leave the forums for this long.  I just somehow never got around to coming back, until now.

Firebeetle is still alive, if that's what you mean, but I don't remember the last time he's played RA2.  He's still writing music I can use for BBEANS though, and when (not if) I run another tournament, I can probably persuade him to enter.

I'd like to test anything else you did for DSL, madiaba.  Shouldn't take too much time to include it in the final download.

Yes Brawl can be distracting.... What do you mean by "lifters"? Will this effect Matilda!?  By the way, I really like the wheel attach-a-weapon thing.

Lifters=electric-powered flippers like Biohazard, Vlad, Wedge of Doom.  The goal is just to lift the opponent and slam them into walls, not send them to the ceiling.

Flippers=pneumatic flippers like Chaos2, T-Minus, Firestorm.  The goal is to send other bots as high as possible.

Matilda is classed as a lifter.

Hi guys.  I haven't been to the forums in a while, but I haven't forgotten about RA2.

While I was absent (due to college work, and the distractions of Fire Emblem, Mario Galaxy, and Smash Bros. Brawl) I got the DSL 2.1 patch finished.  I've posted a copy in the Game Developers forum for beta testing.

For the rest of you who don't have access to that forum, here's some of what you can expect in the patch.

Two new replicas, MikeNCR's Apollyon and Thermidor II

Biohazard has a new, flatter look.

New long axle options on some motors let you stick saws or spikes to the outside of your wheels.

Perm motors can now be mounted diagonally.

WreckTangle is bigger and more entertaining to tear apart than ever.

In addition, the following changes were made.  Most of them are more subtle changes.  Nothing extremely new and exciting I'm afraid, but v2.1 should make DSL overall more convenient and less glitchy.

Slimbody motor is standard
All weapons rebalanced to 60000 efficiency
Better arena cameras
Lifters are slower and less flippy; don't make pssssshhhhhh sound
Replica flippers are slightly powered up
Vlad the Impaler improved
Attach point on Vlad spikes and PA spikes fixed
Vlad spikes moved into Weapons
Ocean Platform hazards are less powerful
Bots are always eliminated when they fall in the ocean and get slowed down by the water
Flip Test Dummy has 4 wheels
Hammer arc on The Judge slightly smaller to make it less glitchy
Beta burst retraction is slightly less powerful to make it less glitchy
Larger team select/import bot windows
E-teks are flatter
Skirt and titanium sheet gmf's are redone to be less glitchy
Extenders have more HP
El Diablo crash glitch fixed
Razer is more slow and crushy
Ruiner, Tornado Mer, and Vertigo are flatter
New BBEANS Champions team (Smashbox 2, Mako, and Shebeast)

Also, some of you are probably wondering about BBEANS4.  Yes, I still have plans to hold more BBEANS tournaments.  Now that my last semester of college is winding down, I should be visiting here more often, and now that DSL 2.1 is mostly out of the way I can really get started organizing a new tournament.  And let me tell you I'm excited about this one.  It's going to be the first event to be held in the Official BBEANS Tournament Arena--but more on that later.  For now, just know that I'm back and will be visiting more often for a while. :)

Yup, you read right, it's done after all these months (years?  I forget.)  So now the only thing left is to test it and make sure it works before it's released to everyone.  Anyone with access to this forum is welcome to try it.

Here is the link:
http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/DSL21.zip

And here is a list of the things that should be changed:

Slimbody motor is standard
All weapons rebalanced to 60000 efficiency
Better arena cameras
Lifters are slower and less flippy; don't make pssssshhhhhh sound
Replica flippers are slightly powered up
Vlad the Impaler improved
Attach point on Vlad spikes and PA spikes fixed

Flip Test Dummy has 4 wheels
WreckTangle is updated
Hammer arc on The Judge slightly smaller to make it less glitchy
Beta burst retraction is slightly less powerful to make it less glitchy
Larger team select/import bot windows
Perm collision more accurate, diagonal attach points added
E-teks are flatter
Astroflights, Magmotors, and E-teks have new long axle option
Skirt and titanium sheet gmf's are redone to be less glitchy
Extenders have more HP
El Diablo crash glitch fixed
Razer is more slow and crushy
Biohazard, Ruiner, Tornado Mer, and Vertigo are flatter
Two new replicas, Thermidor II and Apollyon
New BBEANS Champions team

Post here with any errors you encounter.  Suggestions are welcome too.  I really don't want to be adding anything more after all the time already spent in development, but if it's a really good idea and it's easy to do, I'll do it.

Real robot combat isn't all about damage, unlike RA2.  There's aggression, flipping, and pushing and slamming other bots taken into account too.  In that respect Apollyon could do well.

I understand why you'd pull out Apollyon in the new format, since it would be hard to get KO's with a wedge, but why Ruiner?  Even if the LW's went to the modified format at the last minute, you could still do well with a good HS like that.

Also, by the time I get done with all the bug fixes and rebalancing stuff and start working on new replicas, I think there will definitely be enough of Apollyon to add it in DSL

« on: June 12, 2007, 03:50:32 PM »
Yes you can play online with the flamethrower.  You can play with anything as long as your opponents have it too.

Try fighting with different bots.  You said you used a stock bot against a DSL bot - try DSL on DSL, with simple basic designs not using a lot of parts.

Yeah Warrior sounds pretty awesome.  I wish I could see some of its battles though.

Transferring a few of the AUBB bots (with some stat balancing of course) isn't a bad idea actually.  Some of the DSL replicas are already from that pack.  I have all of those bots on my computer already.  I think Warhead, for one, would make a nice addition

Wow, nice work with that.  I think that's the first replica-bot I've seen that's both accurate AND combat-worthy.

Nice bots!  You know how to make effective weapons.  The only critique I have is that you don't use all the weight available to you on the heavyweights.  For example, you could upgrade T-One's drive to E-teks with a little chassis adjustment and it would be a whole lot better.

You are aware, though, that T-One was a flipper that did quite well in the BBEANS tournament?

You can't make a motor run on air, or a piston run on electricity.  You can put the correct code in the txt file, but the component doesn't drain any power.  If that were possible it would have been done.

It is also impossible (without the source) to make a duplicate flamethrower with different particle effects.  There is no option to set the particle tga in the txt file.

Cool - is that just a shell, or do you have all the stuff (minus the flamethrower of course; I don't see a slot for that) inside Apollyon?

Also how thick is the wedge?  All the pics are from a top view... think it'll stand up to Killabyte?

but, in all honesty, i think you should to a lan tourney with only your friends. There is virtually no lag in lan matches.

You beat me to it.  25 people in one place with RA2?  That's just asking for a massive all-night LAN tourney, which would be awesome since there's no lag or match arrangements.

Is this about AI teams, or Team HQ teams?  I'm guessing AI.  I can't offer much help without seeing your mods, but my best guess is that you did something wrong in Bindings.py.  Try copying, pasting, and editing other bot's code instead of using RAI (I actually don't find that program very useful).

« on: April 05, 2007, 05:46:59 PM »
Maybe not a dual-axle Piglet, but I might be able to make an outrunner brushless motor (such as an AXI) with attach points on each side.  We'll see how practical it ends up being.

You name the smartzone "weapon" (no caps) and the burst "Fire" (with capital F)

That's if you use the Omni AI.  For a flipper, I think the smartzone is named "flip" (not capitalized) and the control is "Flip" (capitalized).

Also, if you use Omni AI, you must make another control called "Srimech" that activates the flipper.  Otherwise your bot won't use it to self-right.

The iron spike and pointy tip are both styles in the drop-down menu for spike strips.
