If you look at the DSL 2.0 AI, you'll notice the same thing. Grog is a shell spinner, Lug Nut is a HS, and Wide Load is a drum. The reason? Diversity. There's already Raptor and Deadbeat for HW hammers, but there are no HW spinners in stock AI, so by changing one of the hammers into a shell spinner you get a wider variety of opponents.
That said, Saber Tooth was the only MW jaw bot while REVENGE and Tornado both fill the HS quota, so the decision to make Saber Tooth a HS might be questionable. But 3 HS's still isn't too much. 3003

Splash, of course. Predictions, yes, for whoever wants to make them. Quote from: Meganerdbomb;11149 I see I'm not listed yet. Did you get my entry, Clickbeetle? I'm not on the forum every day (usually only about once a week, although with registration coming to a close I'm making an effort to check more often) and I also need to check entries for legality, so it could take a while before your name actually appears on the list. But, you're on the list now. Good to see Jules back. FYI, it looks like your success in BBEANS2 has inspired many a builder. There are no less than three Mako look-alikes entered so far... 3004

Armor? Armor is one of SF's weaknesses... but I do agree stronger drive would be a boon. It would require a total rebuild though. I think I'll try out the design on a HW first.

Looks like spawngeek's Spikefan. Which is a good bot. The biggest difference between his and yours is that he made his cooler looking, but then spawngeek was an expert at making cool-looking bots.
Getting compared to both luigica and spawngeek on your first post is a pretty good start, I think. 3006

You can make custom armor, but if it's not plastic, aluminum, titanium, or steel, you can't make it apply a texture to your bot. That information is in the exe. If it was possible to make different types of armor that applied new default textures, you can bet there would be Carbon Fiber/Garolite and Wood armor in DSL.

Idea: true black components. Just a solid black skin, with zero shine, so the component looks like a 2-d, lightless black shape. Kinda like a solid black bot with DSA. Maybe you could even invert the mesh normals so it doesn't get lit up at all.
Probably not very practical, but if you're desperate for ideas might be cool. You can PM me if you want to try it but don't know the necessary gmf stuff. 3008

Ha, this project amuses me. In a good way. FB and I were originally going to do exactly this. Rebuild all the stock AI and release them in a pack called "Stock AI's Revenge", except in the spirit of stock AI we were going to try to keep the bots more realistic. We got Ninja and Berserker done and got a start on Backyard Ripper and EMERGENCY, then said, "Hey, wouldn't it make more sense to do this in DSL? DSL 2.0 could use some new AI with stock DSL parts, and it would be easier to make the bots realistic in DSL." So the DSL 2.0 AI was born.
Good luck with the pack. I can't say I'll be making any bots for it though, being busy with BBEANS currently, and I see Berserker is already made (my Ninja remake wasn't very good). 3009

Well we're up to 18 entries now. I managed to badger Firebeetle into getting a bot together. Assuming that madiaba, dexterhunter, Meganerdbomb, Death, and man manu are all entering, that makes 23. Just one away from 24--come on guys, let's see if we can make it to 24, since that's a nice number for brackets.
Speaking of dexterhunter: you need to resend your bot; there was no attachment on the e-mail. 3010
Tournament Archives / all round bot builder championship revival.« on: July 16, 2008, 08:39:27 PM »Quote from: ianh05;11063 i think i'm gonna wait till BBEANS 4 is over to continue the tourney. no way i can compete with it :blackeye_smily: Compete? I see no reason why multiple AI tournaments can't be run simultaneously. It's not like the entrants have any sort of time commitment involved. You just watch the match videos, if you feel like watching them, when they get posted. If anything, I would think having lots of tournaments going on would bolster overall participation. To a point, at least. But in any case, R0B0SH4RK is right. It will be at least another two weeks before BBEANS starts. Plenty of time to get another round or two done. 3011

I finally settled on a bot for BBEANS.
![]() The bot actually isn't THAT good. It's powerful (the flail can deal over 1000 damage in a hit), wedgy, can self right as long as it's not on its side, and the weapon can also be used as a flipper, but it's too slow and lacks sufficient armor to take on high-caliber spinners like Lock Nut and Tempest, and its slow speed also hampers its effectiveness against fast wedges like Razorback and SlashBack. But, it's good enough. I'm not in BBEANS to win (it would be pretty bad if I was, since I'm running the dang thing). I'm in it to be original and provide some entertaining fights. With a mean-looking flail-hammer/flipper, I'm fairly confident that its fights will never be boring. Oh and that's not random Matrix-esque gibberish on the skin. That's actually the contents of the .bot file. If you look close you can see the name on the side. 3012

Discussion / Team Idea« on: July 10, 2008, 09:37:29 PM »
It's possible to make a .bat file that will rearrange the teams so different ones will show up in tournaments. But I don't know how to do it. Also some of the teams (Arthrobotics and Robot Arena Reincarnated, for example) don't follow the LW-MW-HW pattern, so you might end up fighting Gammaraze 3 with a LW, or AW-Terminus with a HW.

Registration was extended another week in an effort to get a few more entries.
IDIII suffered in BBEANS because in both fights, it went up against fast pushy flippers that could keep it from spinning up (first Smashbox and then Fight or Flight) and it was also underpowered. I modified it once so it had only four E-teks and grippier wheels on them, and it spun a lot faster. 3015

Okay guys, due to the decidedly underwhelming response (we're not even halfway to 32 yet), I'm extending registration another week to try and get a few more entries. That means you have until Sunday July 20th to get your entry in!

Playing DSL won't make you better at stock RA2. They have completely different styles. However, I think that for a beginning player it would be easier to learn DSL and get good at it since you don't need to know all sorts of advanced glitches and stacking techniques to make a good bot. Veterans of stock RA2 often have a hard time adjusting to DSL because they're used to making bots with weapons in quantity, while DSL makes a few quality weapons possible.
You're getting good at stock RA2 though. Spike Again 4 could be better, but not much. Any improvements I could suggest now would mostly just be nitpicking. The biggest one is that you could shrink the chassis to put the wheels outside the bot and save a few kgs you could use on more weapons. But again, mostly nitpicky, and I kind of like the aesthetic of the inside-chassis wheels. 3019
Discussion / 2.1 patch released.« on: July 06, 2008, 04:11:10 PM »
Okay, Sage found something pretty important that needs to be fixed, so I've uploaded a DSL patch 2.1.1.
Temporary link: http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/DSL211.zip (can be moved to main download page later and replace 2.1 patch, since 2.1.1 contains everything in 2.1) Somehow Wheely Big Cheese ended up with no smart zone in the 2.1 patch. That is now fixed. I also noticed recently that the motorcycle wheels all have the same collision, and apparently have since DSL 1.0, so in reality the small size is as big as the large size and they are all interchangeable. That is also fixed in 2.1.1. R0B0SH4RK, I think your request belongs in tech support since it doesn't necessarily have to do with the 2.1 patch. We also need more information, like whether the bots in question crash the game or just freeze it, at what time, and how often. 3020

Looks like I might have picked a good time to start BBEANS4, what with luigica and eFFe both reappearing.
If you could scrounge up a bot for the tourney, I'm sure it would be much appreciated. ![]() |
