DSL TC Showcases / Re: Craaig ~ DSL VS Design
« on: April 20, 2014, 09:17:12 PM »
I would accept that LW hammer as IRL as long as it doesn't gain a significant advantage when the hammer swings out of control.

SHW won't be legal because the wepons hit the floor when the match starts. Still looks crazy though.

What's the purpose of that rule anyway?  I mean, I wouldn't call Craaig's SHW IRL, but you could definitely make an IRL bot with that design.  I just don't see what it's meant to prevent.

Nice.  Looks like it would be good against other HS.  So long as you don't lose any wheels.

Seems like a bot that is way more effective when a human is driving... but maybe I'm wrong.

Cool idea!

Actually, all the battleshots in the splash were AI battles.  It's slightly more effective when I'm driving, but still good as AI.

I can see this being really effective with whipper.py. Which is pretty funny, considering it came with the game and it took us 12 years to finally make a competitive one.

I thought about that, and it's a good tactic, but only if it has the opponent pinned.  It's bad if it goes charging at a spinner, then stops and starts whipping back and forth as soon as it gets close.  I might be able to make a custom .py that works but can't be bothered right now.  It's good enough as a rammer.

However, it does act like a pseudo-whipper the way I have it AI'd.  I set 'turn' to 100, so it turns too fast and whips back and forth while trying to face the opponent.  It's landed a few lucky hits that way.

Is Autistic Pride invertible?  If not, you might want to use beater bars instead of spiked clubs to lower the top hexes.  You might also want to use a DSL bar instead of a wide ram plate on top because the wide ram plate has pitiful HP, despite what it says in the description.

i failed at HnM4's wedge stop using it to prove your bot is good people.

Are you kidding?  I have like, two bots that can get under HnM4.  It is definitely one of the better wedges in Nar AI.

These are some cool bots.  I like the spinner shell as armor.  Might not be the strongest option (actually it definitely isn't), but it looks great.

AN ACTUAL GOOD DESIGN?

DSA, two stacked pinks, the rest you can see.

ASMD is made to hit the soft vulnerable parts of horizontal spinners, rather than outright de-weaponing like most rammers.  The two prongs make it easy to grab and trap spinners and get the razors in where they can do damage.  It doesn't always work, but it can beat most spinners at least 50% of the time.  The only spinners in Inf AI that it can't beat are Mini Maced (I don't know why but it JUST CAN'T) and LeveL and similar slow dual HS (unless it gets lucky and no extenders get hit, then it can beat them).

As a specialized anti-HS bot, I really wasn't expecting ASMD to be good against other designs, but it kind of is.  VS are dangerous if it loses the plow, but otherwise it can just knock them around.  Popups and rammers are also dangerous, but those wide prongs make it really good at taking off wheels.  If it can hit a wheel or two (not too difficult), popups and rammers become a lot less dangerous.

Overall against all bot types, I'd say it's my best LW rammer.

So are they basically the same except one has an extra battery?  Why keep the first one around then?  I don't think those blade guards are doing much on such short wedges.

Good build though, looks very solid.  I would rotate the wedge DDTs on the second bot 180 degrees, just to make the wedges slightly wider.

Known glitches I can't do anything about:

- Axle on piston bursts is sideways before attaching.

I lied.  I did something about it.

I noticed that all the working burst motors rotate on the Z axis*, but the new piston bursts rotate on the Y axis.  So I rotated the burst motor body to align the axle on the Z axis instead, and lo and behold, the axle is no longer rotated weirdly before attaching.  It seems like a simple solution, until you realize that simply editing the TM Rows doesn't work; you need to rotate the actual mesh, and these pistons have 252 mesh faces.  Fortunately, I found a couple of Excel shortcuts that somewhat expedited the process.

This isn't just an aesthetic change.  The wonky axle on the old pistons would collide with things, making it impossible to attach it in a narrow space, even though it would fit once it was placed.  This fix should make building with the piston bursts much simpler.

* "What about the JX Burst?" you ask.  Well, look closely.  Before you attach it, there is a black loop that goes around the middle, but it disappears after attaching.  This is part of the axle that becomes hidden once the axle rotates sideways.  I will probably fix this at some point too, though it's not as much of a priority as the JX Burst still functions the same.

Contests / Re: BOTM Ideas and Discussion
« on: April 15, 2014, 11:55:10 PM »
Maybe we could try this idea again?

Idea for future BOTMs.  Everyone who wants to nominates one bot (not their own) that has been posted on the forum during the past month.  Anything is fair game, but since you can't nominate your own bot only the best/most original should get nominated.  Then we vote on the nominees for BOTM.

So it's not so much a building contest as an award open to all the recently posted bots.  Kinda like the Oscars or something.

Sage's idea sounds cool too, if we could get someone willing to do that, and able to select bots fairly.

Whoa.  Nice way to make a saw blade without using an actual saw blade.  Also, props for using treads effectively.  I feel like this bot should be invertible though.

I have no idea why you would build that (unless there were another Not Quite Replica Wars coming up)... but the handle needs to be on a piston.

Someone confused NQRW with ORAD
 :gawe:

Whups.  You know what I'm talking about though.  The one where you build replicas of random objects that aren't robots.

The hammer looks kind of weird, like you wanted to build a Toe Crusher type bot, then added those rear supports when it didn't work.  I would get rid of the supports, make the back of the hammer long enough to touch the ground when retracted (for stability), and then use the heaviest chassis armor you can afford (for durability and stability).

Dusk looks cool.  You might have gone a bit overboard with the Hworf spikes, but otherwise there is nothing to critique here.

Yo click you gonna enter a stock tourney soon?

If one comes up soon!

That looks amazing Click. It's also pretty original too. One question, how stable is it?

More stable than most traditional hammers.  Stable enough to never be in danger of tipping itself over (unless you rotate the servo exactly 180 degrees, at which point it Havoks out of control.  I'm hoping that won't happen in battle.)  Part of what makes this design work is the weight distribution--Thunderclap is tall, but still has a low center of gravity.  Those Storm skirts alone weigh 60 kgs, counting the hinges.

Good old DSL2.

It's been too long since I entered a tournament.  Kurt's Powers of Three tournament was the only one open, so I built something for it.

Stats: Astroflight drive with wide ant wheels, 6 ant batteries, servo turret-mounted hammer (30kg sledge), 5mm aluminum armor.

I revise my earlier assessment that this turret hammer design only works in SHW.  Thunderclap is actually pretty good for an IRL bot.  It's weak against drums, but can hold its own against most other designs, especially HS.  Thunderclap wants to be matched up with two HS with weak tops in the tournament.

In theory, this should be a good design for Powers of Three, being wedged on all sides with the ability to attack in any direction.  In practice, I'll probably get flipped OOTA in the first round.  BUT I'LL LOOK COOL DOING IT.

I see no problems with this .bot file or the bindings (other than that space helloface found).  Check that:

- there are 4 spaces before list.append in Bindings.py

- the .bot file is named Bot0.bot, Bot1.bot, or Bot2.bot, etc.

- you actually have OmniRam.py in your AI folder

Edit: Also check that you're using DSL3.  I don't know why you said I need Nar AI 3 to open this bot.

The one on the right will be better in combat though.  Do you want coolness or effectiveness?

Also, love the Probe.

You need to set 'UseSrimech':1 in the bindings for Flip and Srimech controls to work together.

In the bot file, the name in the "Name" line must match the name in the bindings.  If the spelling (including capitalization) does not match, the game will crash

Don't forget spaces... A surprising number of crashes happen because someone put two spaces in their bot's name, or an extra space at the end or something.

Old design I never posted.

I tried fiddling around with it a lot (irons and razors instead of axes, two razors on the Snapper, shallower chassis wedge) but this one consistently performs better than anything else.  That's not to say it's good though.  It is a LW rammer/popup hybrid, after all.  Can't expect too much out of something like that.  It probably wins about 1 in 3 battles against standard HS, and it's useless against most other designs.  But it completes the LW/MW/HW Cold Weather trio, so it's worth it.

DSA of course, and the rest is visible.
