Looks like a tough field, lots of heavy hitters.  And >50% of them are spinners!  To be expected, I suppose... at least there's a better balance of HS/VS than in BBEANS.

As long as I don't fight a VS, Infernal Contraption, or obZen, Epic Flailure at least has a chance I think.

Sage, if you want an easy clickable bracket like in BBEANS, you can use these blank bracket templates.  They're only 2 colors so they are easily recolorable.  They will fit the image maps for the BBEANS4 brackets. (just view source on the bracket page).

I mean I've never had to face him in a tournament.  We've fought off the record before.

Sage: the loser's bracket bots might have had more fights, but that's also more opportunities to get knocked out of the tournament.  What would be unfair is if the loser's bracket bots were given lower scores than the winner's bracket bots despite having beaten more opponents.

And I don't see any way around the fact that the loser's bracket has more fights in it.  Either I would need to arbitrarily add more fights to the winner's bracket (unfair), or remove some fights from the loser's bracket, so some bots would be eliminated without fighting (even more unfair).

Anyways, Round 6 is up!

I tried some new techniques for these videos. For one thing, I put in background music, which I always do near the end of the tournament (I don't use it for the whole tournament because then it would get tiresome). Music is by Firebeetle.

But secondly, I put in some slow-motion instant replays of the really spectacular hits. I haven't done anything like this before so I'd like to know what you all think! The fights with instant replays are Ham-mer Sandwich vs. Diarrhea Of A Madman and Smitemare 8 vs. Red, Red, Green?

i love bbeans

but he did it again

You'll have to sneak and look at Phlox's bot after he enters next time, and then build a bot to counter it

...And then not end up facing him, probably.  It's pretty weird that you two would fight two BBEANS in a row, while me and FB have never fought.

Building a good bot doesn't have to be expensive.  Just look at Bobbing For French Fries.  The hard part is handling the little details in the design (like exactly how your spinner will be attached to the axle and not break; stuff you usually neglect in the CAD), and then finding time to actually build it.  Like, I have several parts laying around for a Defy Ant 3, and if I had the time I could make some progress.

The new Ruiner looks great, by the way.  A lot more like 2EZ though, which could be a good thing/bad thing.  More reliability, less originality.

Also: I will now make a Hawk 3 with th WORST paint job ever, just to make it the ugliest bot ever, while th skin is in the works.

Good luck.

^ That was originally going to be the upgraded ALARM for the DSL 2.0 AI.  But after FB finished it, we both decided it was far too ugly to include in DSL (in addition to other performance issues, but the main thing was ugliness), and so I made RED ALERT instead.

Still, FB's original prototype was so ugly it's funny, so we decided to keep it around.  What makes it even funnier was that it started out as a serious bot; FB didn't even try to make it ugly.

Round 5 is up, everybody!  This is the last loser's bracket "catch-up" round before we return to the winner's bracket.

There were some pretty major surprises this round.  Let's just say that two out of the four fights went the complete opposite direction I expected.

I don't want to get into this argument... I've been in it before and it goes nowhere.  For either side.  But,

Quote from: madiaba;15219
You cannot hold people responsible to be 'civil', when they can only do what they are tended to do; any form of 'civilization' is undermined. And this is what we see taking place today. Reason must rise above the level of a beast, else an Alpha ruler is needed to impose his will upon the rest of the pack.

Quoted for truth.

Too many and too strict laws are a bad thing, everyone knows this.  The classic example is the Nazis.  But few people realize that too much freedom is also a bad thing.  Everyone always talks about "Free country" and "Free speech" and "Tolerance", but you know what you call somebody with total 100% freedom?  An animal.  Aside from intelligence, the difference between humans and animals is that we govern ourselves with laws.  Those laws are meant to keep us civilized.  Take them away, and we become a mere pack of highly intelligent beasts.

This goes beyond homosexuality by the way... people in America already have too much freedom.

The next BBEANS is HW stock.  I have a few improvements for the BBEANS Tournament Arena in mind for it.  As for when... I'm not working on DSL at the moment, so it could be anytime after BBEANS4.  Just not right away.  I'll give a brief respite.

Good to see you again, MV.  Planning on making a new HW now?

Clickbeetle has always been impressive, one of the few members who skipped the unskilled at building bots stage.

Oh I went through it all right... you just didn't see it

That has got to be the second ugliest DSL bot I've seen.  (The first ugliest is an unshowcased bot built by FB).  Don't mean to be mean here, but the huge, boxy chassis, plain skin, and tiny wheels in the back don't make a good combo.

But it looks like it can fight a heck of a lot better than it looks.  I haven't yet seen a double Beta flipper that also has a secondary active weapon.  Dunno where you found the weight for that, but it looks good.  My only suggestion would be to add a skirt wedge in the front, to make it easier to get under bots.  And give it a better skin!

It looks like a cross between Barbie's Onyx and Warhead.  Warhead has the same self righting system.  You should try to get weight to make the srimech more big and curvy and decorative, like Warhead's wings.  Then you'd really have a cool looking bot.

Firebeetle tried making a Carousel of Doom arena, where you fight to stay on a spinning merry-go-round, but unless you set the floor friction to the point where you can hardly drive, the floor just slides underneath the bots and the bots don't move.  And if the friction IS that high, the floor has to be spinning at a snail's pace or else the centrifugal force will hurl all the bots off before you can so much as say "It doesn't work."

Alright, I removed the cfz, and it didn't give me any control boards, so I had to re-instate it.

Oh, and excuse my ignorance, but what are the Read-Only files?

You should at least have the blue ax2550 DSL control board and the Ant control board.  You DID install DSL 2.0 first, right?  You didn't start right away with the 2.1 patch?

Contests / BOTM suggestions
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:50:07 AM »
Idea for future BOTMs.  Everyone who wants to nominates one bot (not their own) that has been posted on the forum during the past month.  Anything is fair game, but since you can't nominate your own bot only the best/most original should get nominated.  Then we vote on the nominees for BOTM.

So it's not so much a building contest as an award open to all the recently posted bots.  Kinda like the Oscars or something.

Lol at Mam-mer Sandwich and DoaM getting owned. Could it beat Enfilade?

No, popups are one design it can't handle.  It can't beat Hazardous Contraption or Red Tide VI either.  But it can at least put up a good fight against any other bot.

Your bot name is Enfilade?  I thought it was Enfilad-3.  Like theres an Enfilad1 and Enfilad2.

Oh boy.  Laggerific.  I made a bot like that once and it was as laggy as a SHW.

It was also powerful, though, as Steel Meatball no doubt also is.  Don't wanna face that bot in RAW!  I've found that using all flails is sometimes a mistake, though.  The axles are a weak link.  You might want to try using a combination of flails and fixed weapons, like on Grog the Vengeful.

Edit: Wait, what am I doing giving advice to possible opponents? :S

Ah well, it's all in good sport.

Me and FB made a few omnidirectional bots back in the day, and the main problem I've seen is that the sideways-facing wheels slow the bot down too much.  You need to put a lot more weight into the drive, and you don't even go any faster for it--you go slower.  The only kind of bot I've seen that's real effective with that drive setup is sit and spinners.

That reminds me, somebody (I don't remember who) made a SHW DSL bot with actual working Mecanum wheels.  They were made out of discs with a bunch of angled smaller wheels on axle mounts on the edge.  Terribly weight-inefficient, but terribly cool too.

The wheels look well enough protected as it is, and the maces are wider than spikes so it would be easier to ram with them.  I don't see any way to improve that bot.  Nice work.

Edit: Did you try removing and replacing the wheels on that first bot?  It doesn't matter how the weight is distributed now if it was distributed unevenly when the wheels were first attached.  It's one of those weird quirks of RA2.

That does sound fun.  Just ban mini cannons... otherwise we'd have a tournament full of bots with 50 mini cannons that kill each other during the countdown.
