Tournament Archives / a possible tournament with new format!
« on: March 24, 2009, 05:08:25 PM »
yeah that's basically the idea. i seen that in arena idea's, so it's kinda like a gauntlet? maybe it could be the final challenge between the 2 top robots.

i thought about the pros and cons of a tourney like this..

Pros: no bye rounds needed at all, adds variety, you get to watch your robot as much as anyone else (expect maybe top 2 at the end).

cons: more videos needed to be recorded, uploaded and linked.

that was just a demo and no the box isn't going to have weapons, the drive was to stop immobility issues :P (i would let it sit there if i could) if anything it'll get more defense. here's the idea behind each challenge in case some haven't got it yet.

2 on 1: tests the offense and defense of your robot.
beat the box: tests the offense only.
tilt: tests the drive, pushing power and wedge (if any) of your robot
survival: tests the defense only (unless you can knock the much bigger bot out).

if anyone wants to throw together a small test tourney pm me, just another 2-3 people will do.

i went to continue ARBBC but the computer that i was hosting it on i think got formatted and everything was lost, the bots, arena and some of my better robots were also lost.

this is an idea i'm putting out there, i might get a small group to test it out. i don't think people should lose faith in me yet as i failed to complete 1 tournament O.o i also hosted another 3? and they all got completed.

also my AI skills aren't really that great, if someone could ai the bots and send them in a pack i shouldn't have a problem recording, uploading and posting the vids.

robosh4rk i am 64th in rankings but submitted 2 reasonably good robots i don't think rankings at this stage can reflect on the caliber of the competition.

my friend (glenku) was unknown by all and has never even registered on the forums but he is right up there ahead of some big names on the forum yet he just missed out on entering, so maybe someone else will have the chance to surprise us or maybe i will be able to get a win or 2?

if i was gonna be unhappy with anything about the entries is that people like pivanov and jet-speed who were newcomers that showed lots of potential won't be in and never got to enter any other bbeans either.

nice splash! if i make multi-bots i generally make it tough for them to hit each others chassis and weapons. does the bar that has the weapons attached come off fast when they battle together? apart from that they look pretty good.

i used emergency wedges cause they are bigger and provide more protection to the front of the chassis.. if i change to small wedges and extend the wedges out the front more i need to cover the extenders which on this bot is a problem as i have the snapper motors set on the sides.

this tournament would have to be stock to start i believe to test everyone's stock skills in a number of different ways. the original plan was stock lw.

i also made a mistake with the survival challenge info, the robot you face should be at least 1 weight class higher.. i had plans for the lws to face a hw to see who would last the longest :P

video should be up soon, and should explain the challenges better.

should also note that this kind of format requires 0 byes and any amount of bots could enter, plus everyone would see their bot compete in the same amount of challenges as all the others except the top 2 if the death match is included.

ok so i used to host some tournaments, but they take a lot of time and effort and i hosted a few in a short space of time and in the end just couldnt handle it. when i was hosting tournaments, the main thing i wanted to achieve was variety and giving you all entertainment.

with all that being said before i finished hosting tourneys i had an idea that didn't get off the ground due to my lack of concentration so here it is...

this tournament idea that i had has the entrants face a series of challenges to obtain points.

-2 on 1: your robot faces 2 robots at once that are a weight class below yours.
-beat the box: a beat the clock challenge.
-Tilt: a tabletop match against a strong well built rammer/wammer(wedged rammer).
-Survival: a 1 on 1 match against a powerful bot that is at least a weight class above yours.
-i would also consider a death match at the end with the 2 top bots to decide the winner.

points work like this, the best performing bot on a challenge gets... lets say 10 points (depends how many are entered) and last place gets 0.

seems like a pretty nice tourney that offers variety, i will have a video demo of all the types of challenges on youtube shortly (NOTE: i made the video some time ago and the robots you face in challenges would be submitted (hopefully) by an accomplished bot builder).

what do you all think?

Edit: video is up..

tried out the snapper idea and it really didn't help due to reach problems you have to be very precise when you fire the snapper and if you miss you gotta wait to fire again. with the redbird its attack is more frequent and precision isn't an issue.

i know it's no lightweight but here's a heavyweight that I'm trying to make better:

I'm no wedge expert as of yet, i get the feeling it should be longer though.. any ideas?

lol ROBOSH4RK, a sftw entry just might = my first BBEANS win... lets not be negative ;) and yes Urjak is right, rookies make it interesting and one or more of them usually go very far or wins the whole thing.

note to click i am considering using up my robot switch, i've got a rather nasty hw i fixed up. you have all seen the basic model of it but now its even more devastating :)

and i prefer no byes cause no one misses out on watching their bot in action.. and having 64 entries just means more work needs to be done and we will have too wait much longer for vids and for the tourney to start.

i make them all as stable as possible or make them able to self right or make them invertible.

the bottom one has no stability issues that i have run into, the top one can be improved.

I'm a big fan of lightweight, beetleweight and antweight robots, the weight limit makes them a challenge to build and come up with unique and effective designs.

NOTE: My AW's start showing up around page 6 and continue to improve the deeper into the showcase you go.

Ugly Duckling - Runner-up in CombatAnts 3.

ANTWEIGHT PREVIEW

Here are some of my best/coolest AW's:

AW - Stone Tablet: A very strong, fast rammer with 26lbs/kgs(whatever system the game uses) of weaponry.

AW - Tumbleweed: A neat flailing hammer/slapper type bot with a protective razor that's also used for ramming.

AW - Tripwire: A really annoying AW wammer for opponents to face with it's nice wedge and great speed provided by it's 2 pinks. The 2 razor tips are there to deal damage to any bot it gets under.

AW - Toy Drumset 2: The sequal to the very first stock AW drum bot. A nice AW drum with only 1 pink, however that is enough power to get under and lift AW's.

AW - One-eyed Jack: A tough rammer/axle HS hybrid designed to ram bots with the razors and have the iron spike spin around and hit either side of the opposing bot.

AW - Downward Spiral: The first in the series of AW axle drills designed to rip away at the top of other AW's.

when i was playing i got bad headaches, especially from getting all those tourneys running. i think it stressed me out a fair bit so I'm having some time away. I've always had problems staying focused on tasks, that's why i built lw's most the time.

*crosses fingers and hopes for a fluke win*

i won't have the most amount of weapons this time round :P unlike the past 2 bbeans where i went all out and tried to pack as many on as i could. this time around i'm sending in an older bot cause i haven't played the game in ages (since the ARBBC tourney, which im unable to finish due to having lost all entries.)
