Awesome. Are there any wheels that fit in the wheelguards that would work instead of the walking?

sure there are but they would prevent it from failing 

I think dsl 1 or 2 wheels would do the job

the metalhinges people use in RA2 are mounted on the baselevel of the robots. IRL the hinges are raised up.
