Discussion / motors outside the bot?« on: March 26, 2009, 09:39:33 PM »
baseplate anchors are a good start for beginners. attach an extender to your baseplate anchor going outside the robot and put the motor on then.
its pretty easy to get motors and stuff outside, you should look at showcases and the beetlebros site for tips. 2743

does anyone remember my attempt at a lightweight dual VS? well it had stability issues and kept tipping over. i thought i could resolve the issue by putting the drive further back on the bot to balance it out, well it worked but now i have turning issues >.<
advice? :) and here's my best lightweight that i have built imo for those who never got to see it, this pic is of the very first version and it was improved with longer wedges but i lost that version. Note: there are videos of this bot on my youtube channel. 2744

it should be staying at 32, it's not fair to give anyone else more time to get a robot built and sent in.

it is a good robot, HS's are probably the strongest all round robots in the game imo that's why they are so popular. what makes a good builder great is being innovative and original, i love checking out clicks showcase to get some new idea's i think you should take a look at his showcase sometime.. it's a shame we all had to start over again cause click had a lot more unique designs.
did you control your robot yourself in those battles? a little advice from me is learn how to ai your bots if you haven't already and test your robots that way. bottom line: AI vs AI matches for your robots and make them a bit different from every other bot we have seen. 2746

clickbeetle i think created that hammer of justice bot and it's the biggest robot ever made in RA2, even if you did create a bigger robot your going to need a huge arena.

HS's don't need wedges but they need to be invertible take a look at inf's HS's, they and most other hs's don't have any they focus on being invertible, some defense (most the time its a plow) and lots of offense.

test it against alien queen or another VS? and more battle shots against NWB and or rabid pit bull.
is it invertible? if not even rammers can give you problems. 2749

woot finally got it stacked in the nifty :)
so here's what i got: open to any ideas on how to improve it. i was thinking downgrading the motors and trying to get a plow + a razor tip on the front.. 2751

these weapons don't slow down after hitting the opponent that's for sure, once it touches your chassis it rips it up faster then the flash can walk down the street :P
more lightweight designs are underway. 2753

kill343gs makes another good point, adding up to another 32 entries just doubles the work. i hosted the tag team tournament which i had to fix up the bindings file for all 32 robots (most AI was done by the builders) and for the 16 teams it took about 32 videos! which i had to edit with movie maker cause fraps saves massive files then upload all of them then link them all... that took a lot of work and time.
think about the work click would have to do, its not as simple as "sure lets add another 32 bots". 2754

@ sage: a game is one match. the rules, format and such make it a sport.
back on topic, i sent in my new entry :) better then the original i sent in.. another thing some vets could have done ![]() it could go well, or really bad.. based on my luck in BBEANS I'm gonna go with the later. 2755

hmm, i think maybe i can put all the parts of one challenge in 1-2 vids. that would take away lots of work required.

if something like this "benchmark" idea were to happen the whole fairness of BBEANS would be destroyed! think about the good builders or bad builders who got to face bots like spinner from the west and got easy wins, their ranking is higher then mine because of it... i should have the same chance to get some easy matches.
want to have a "benchmark" tourney? fine, but don't change BBEANS. and if you want to compare a robot tournament to anything in real life compare it to robot wars or battlebots.. both had good and bad robots. the Olympics is something very different! 2758

another point i have, you are gonna stir up a lot of trouble if you change who is allowed to enter.. if spinner from the west got to enter its not fair for other inexperienced builders if you change it so only good robots get in.
them: "sorry your entry was denied, reason: not good enough for BBEANS." you: "wtf? what about that spinner from the west?!" just won't work...lol 2759

since when has BBEANS been about only the vets and good builders hmm?
most of the robots have been decent in every BBEANS (except maybe BBEANS 1 cause of how inexperienced most were). this tournament gives EVERYONE a chance to send in their own bot and lets them watch it compete against other bots for entertainment and to see how their bots measure up against others. come on guys.. 2760

i just need to figure out what's a good amount of entries for this. if you think about it 10 entries with 4 challenges = 40 videos that's less entrants and more videos that is the one concern i have about the tournament.
good news, i still have all the robots featured in the video so i can use them as the challenges still. i don't wanna race into anything and it would be best to have it all organized before any talk of starting the tourney happens.. i just really like the idea. |
