It's always been a waiting list for a 64-bot tourney.  I just needed 48 bots to make the byes fit nicely so two byes would never fight each other.  There's nothing wrong with having more than 48.

Um.  It wasn't blocking swear words.  I filtered random words like "no", "not", and "awful", as well as RA2 words like "arena", "LW", "MW", and "popup".

Also you need to stop bumping old threads.  Unless you have something really important to add, generally you shouldn't post somewhere where the last post was made more than a month ago.  (the date of posts is in the upper left corner.)

I got System32's friend's bot, so we're safe at 16 now.

THE 64-BOT BRACKET IS GO!

Though we're still only at 48 bots.  Plenty of room still if anyone else wants to make a last minute entry!

Edit:  ALSO, IMPORTANT RULE UPDATE.

In the interest of minimizing video file size and keeping matches to a reasonable length, I'm switching the fight time limit to 2 minutes instead of 3.  I will edit the BBEANS arena py accordingly in order to make the hazards activate at the proper time (the blade after 40 seconds, and the flippers after 80).

I don't think FFU's wedges actually go through the floor.  They probably just have messed up collision that makes it look like they're going under the floor when they're really not.

The only component I've seen that actually goes through the floor is the Ghost Wedge in FB's component pack, and that will snag and pop out of the floor whenever it encounters a seam between polys.  FFU doesn't ever snag.

Some good, if controversial, fights here.

If you have siblings or friends who play RA2, they can enter.  But just make sure that it's their decision to enter and not yours.  Don't just find someone else's bot and send it saying "This person is entering!"

On that note, I think sending bots from old veterans like Rejected in absentia is going a little too far.  Something seems wrong with somebody being in a tournament without knowing it.  And there's also the question of how to distribute the prizes if they win anything.  So... no.  But thanks for trying to help.

15 people on the waiting list now!!!

I'm going to check my e-mail and PMs again tomorrow, and if there's at least one more entry, the 64-bot bracket is a go.

So infiniteinertia... Scrap Daddy... Wham... nerd500... maybe SpyGuy... if you're planning on entering, now's the time to do it.  Your entry could make the difference between 32 and 48+ bots.

Like Iron Spaghetti with razor tips.  I wonder which one would win in a fight.  CoT has weapon quantity while Iron Spaghetti has quality.

The LW looks nasty.  I can imagine it would be hard to drive, though.  It must gyro-dance like a VS.  Perhaps a slightly less powerful weapon motor would be good?  Like a Perm 80?

At least this isn't one of those forums that changes every link to a rickroll.

Hey, that's a good idea.  Hmm... maybe next year...

Nah.  April fools.

Sure it's inconvenient, but it's only for one day.  It's not a long wait until it's over.

I knew the bot exchange was fake but only because goose told me what he would do... we were all in on each other's jokes.  I wonder if I would have believed it if I didn't know.

I didn't even see that that thing had flails until you posted those battle shots.  Nice work; one of the most original weapons I've seen on a LW.  It's got to be a pain to make a LW flailing VS though, with the axles glitching out every time you enter the bot lab.

I would use a plow instead of those wedges, though.  Perhaps two if you have weight.  You aren't going to get under much with un-bursted wedges, and a plow would provide considerably more protection.

Also, I think iron spikes would be a good weapon choice.  They're longer, so in theory you could use shorter extenders which would then get hit less often.

All right guys, I removed the filters and everything is back to normal.

Test sentence:  I do not like bad LW popups in no arena.

I feel that this forum has become too negative.  Therefore, starting today, all (well, most) negative words shall be replaced with something more uplifting in order to help cheer this sad place up.  Namely, smileys.  :)

I also feel that this community's lingo and jargon is too confusing for new players.  Therefore, I am also implementing some changes that will force us all to speak more plainly.  You will no longer be able to use some popular RA2 slang, but I hope that our posts will be more understandable in general and this will be a more welcoming place for new players.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope you'll all cooperate with the new rules!

Tournament Archives / BBEANS6 April fools
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:27:43 AM »
Yes that's right, since anticipation for BBEANS6 is already so high when 5 hasn't even started, I decided to run them both concurrently!  Registration for BBEANS6 is NOW OPEN!!!

RULES - READ THESE FIRST before entering!

First, make sure to read the General Rules (CLICK HERE).

I've made a few more slight revisions for this tournament in the free restart rules.  I'm still not satisfied with the way I've been handling immobility and free restarts, so instead of using an overly complex set of objective parameters to determine when a bot is "able", I'm doing it more subjectively this time.  In a nutshell, if I think a bot is still mobile when it is counted out, it gets a free restart.  If I think it's really immobile, then it doesn't.

Tournament Format[/u]

The weight class used will be Lightweight.

The game mode will be DSL.  Obviously, no cheatbot2 parts or custom parts are allowed, but that also means no stock parts.

Matches in BBEANS6 will consist of three 2-minute fights, best two out of three (or three out of three) wins.

The bracket will be double elimination.

The matches will be fought in the BBEANS Tournament Arena V2.

There are 64 entry slots.  That sounds like a lot, but hey, we're almost there for BBEANS5, why not 6 too?

Prizes

The prizes for BBEANS6 are the same as for #5.  The Champion will receive the Champion's Sword plus one prize component of their choice.  The runner-up, the rumble winner, and each winner of the bonus awards will also receive one prize component of their choice.

The Champion's Sword:

The prize components:

Number one, the Stacked Supervolt.

Number two, the BBEANS Blade.

Number three, the Nifty Battery/Control.

Number four, the BBEANS Hammer.

Number five, the Armored Magmotor.

Registration[/u]

Registration opens NOW (April 1st) and closes in 6 weeks.

To send your bot, do one of these things, or both if you want to be extra certain I get it.

1) E-mail me at sjheophtclickbeetle3364zggdobtehea@gmail.com (Obviously, don't include that gibberish in the middle in my e-mail address.  That's just to fool spambots.  Only type the blue text)

2) Upload your bot to Gametechmods's file uploader, and give me the link in a PM.

Changing and Updating your Entry[/u]

You can change your entry at any time for as long as I haven't AI'd it.  I will wait at least one week after I get your bot to start AI'ing it, so you have one week guaranteed in which you can change your entry.  After that you're gambling.

You can change your entry only one time.

If you AI'd your own bot, you can change your entry one time anytime before the tournament starts.

Updating your entry is different.  You can update your bot as many times as you want, anytime before the tournament starts.  This is for minor tweaks, like wedge position and armor placement.  In order to be counted as an update and not a change, your new bot must be basically the same as your old one, and be able to use the same AI bindings as the old one.

The one exception is if for some reason your bot is unable to fight, I will give you a chance to change it.

Looks cool, CB.
Just noticed that your 3rd increment is not accurate: .. .11 x .5 = .055 .
Might want to fix that before too many go out....

Dang, how did I miss that?  Someone wasn't thinking...

Well, it's fixed now with an accurate scale.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Most of us have wide screen now....

Mine at home is 1920 x 1200
My laptop is 1440 x 900

What do we do to resize it for those resolutions?

I don't know.  The high res version might actually work; I can't try it because I don't have a monitor that big.  But if it works for both 1024x768 and 1280x1024, there's a fair chance it could work for even bigger widescreen sizes.

If it doesn't work, then I would need to make a custom blueprint.bmp for every resolution.  Which is simply too much work.  So you would probably need to resize the grid yourself until it fit on your resolution, or just temporarily downgrade to a lower resolution while your are making a chassis.

it's childs play IV, what do i win?

That was fast.  I didn't really expect anyone to get that.  You win some reputation points!  (definitely not a spur of the moment decision there)

Edit:  Well, you would win some rep points if the reputation system still existed.  When did it go down?

The flamethrowing LW is hard to see.  Not sure what to make of it, other than that having two flamethrowers is probably overkill.

The juggler LW looks great.  I didn't think it could be done that effectively on a LW.  I don't see how you could have beat Lock Nut with those exposed axles and chassis (at least once the wedges are gone), though.

Big Bang Theory:  Urjak, those are the drive motors.

Kind of along the same lines as my bot Phasmatodean, except I bet BBT is a lot more combat effective with its faster spinup time.  (Phasmatodean was never really a serious combat bot; I just wanted to build the biggest VS possible.)  Looks a little fragile with those exposed drive motors, but it probably delivers some huge hits.

Great bot.  A Nifty should be plenty; Chain Reaction has 4 HP's and it does just fine on a Nifty (as fine as it can with the limitations of the round chassis, that is... I should make a new version with a more efficient chassis.)

Is it just coincidence, or has the number of bots with flail weapons increased dramatically since Chain Reaction was BOTM?

Discussion / best moments in tourney history?
« on: March 31, 2009, 09:52:54 PM »
Man, there's a lot of them.

One was in BBEANS1, when I Will Get Shredded made it to the semifinals and even when it lost, it wasn't without a fight.  I still think IWGS vs. Wedge Tracker is one of the best matches in BBEANS history.  Everyone thought IWGS would live up to its name, but it turned out to be a half-decent bot.

Also Hazardous Contraption vs. Red Red Green?, because even though HazCon ends up winning 3-0, for a large part of the match it looks like it's going to be RRG.  You really can't tell who's going to win that one until it's over.

I made a (I think) pretty useful replacement blueprint image with more grid lines.  Check it out:

It makes it a lot easier to do precision chassis editing, when you need to place a line at a quarter-box distance or something that's hard to just eyeball.

(Bonus points if you can guess which bot's chassis that is.  Hint: it's not one of mine.)

I also put a scale on there for those of you into component modeling.  Each box on the grid equals 0.22 meters (the units used in gmf files).  Yeah, it's really awkward, but it's not my fault, the snap-to grid is hard coded into the exe or something; I can't change it.

There are two versions of the new grid image.

If you play the game in 800x600 resolution, you need http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/blueprint_lowres.zip  (Extract the zip into Infogrames/Robot Arena 2/UI/botlab; replace the original blueprint.bmp)

If you play the game in 1024x768 or 1280x1024 resolution, you need http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/blueprint_hires.zip  (instructions are the same as for low res)

If you play the game in 640x480 resolution... well, nobody plays at that low of resolution.  And if you do you're out of luck.

I'm not sure how well it will work at some of the massive custom resolutions some of you use.  You can try it but I can't guarantee it will fit properly.

Such as stratocaster, which can get 11k with a good charge... Unfortunatly the arena blocks such a hit.

That hasn't stopped anyone else from entering a rammer.  Nor should it stop you.

Seriously, there are more rammers than horizontal spinners right now.  Well maybe not quite, but it's at least close.  I'd have to count to be sure.

Also, we're now halfway to the 16 bots I need for the bigger bracket.  It's still possible to reach the goal by Saturday, but it's going to be close.  Any of you people sitting on the fence with a bot ready or nearly ready, now's the time to send them in (remember, you can always change it once within a week of entering).
