Well now that the cat's out of the bag I can post my observations...

It looks to me like ItI "glitched" under PitA.  Or rather, PitA's wedges glitched over ItI's chassis.  When the bots first collide, it almost looks like PitA gets under (and in fact it did get under briefly in the first match) but then PitA's wedges sort of "pop" and appear on top of ItI.

I have no idea how exactly it happened, but it's gotta be some sort of glitch, because I don't see how any bot with a plain chassis wedge could get under PitA naturally.

Oh, and also: it wasn't a freak accident either.  I did several more matches off the record between PitA and ItI to see how often ItI gets under, and it's about 1 in every 4 or 5 fights.  So ItI got lucky, but not unnaturally lucky.

Great work JoeBlo; Grindhouse vs. Shinigami was especially good.

What program are you using to make the videos?  It's not regular Windows Movie Maker is it?  Because I didn't think you could do those little animations like you have on the bot intro screens.

Looks like I'm fighting Exponential Decay for my first fight.  Good.  I think Timber has a better chance against a shell spinner than a wedgy flipper.  That 250cm disc has a lot of HP, though... it's probably going to be close.  At least I'll definitely get in a few hits with the hammer.

Pause the game before loading the match and the wedges should start in the right spot.

Cool idea, kind of the same concept as making replicas of real life bots.

How good is Shebeast in combat?  Looks like the most stock combat-worthy of the three.

I saw two big upsets not one, personally.

Not sure what you're talking about.  Heaven's Sawmill vs. Revenge Of Dr. Wham?  Spearhead vs. Vela?  The palindromes vs. Trojan Horse?  Mildly surprising, but any of those fights could have gone either way.

But something like Insult to Injury vs. MIDF hasn't been seen since razor guy vs. Rampant Puppy Love.  I think Alterer of Reality now has a good shot at Best Rookie...  makes me want to try and improve ItI's design.

Nooooo... now everyone can see how much of a noob I was when I first joined.

Actually I don't mind.  It's a reason to give noobs second chances.  You never know who they might become.

What's the "one-hit-kill" glitch??

It was a glitch invented by a guy named Artitan / Pete Lefeu.  Basically you have a popup, and it one hit kills stuff.  The weapons got stuck inside the chassis of the other bot, causing billions upon billions of damage (I'm not exaggerating... I think the record was 100 billion damage or something).  He deemed the glitch too powerful, and never correctly told anyone how he did it.  (He did post instructions on Technex's forums, but they turned out to be faulty because Pete Lefeu wasn't sure himself how he did it.)

You might be able to find his showcase somewhere on the Wayback machine, and see the original one hit kill bot.  Not sure.  It was called Sting, and the sequel was called Devil Incarnation.

You would not believe how long it took me to do that. =P I skipped some we've already seen, IE Drumblebee Larva, etc.
FB come back! =(

I've told him he should drop by again sometime, but he's always like "meh, yeah, I know..."  I'll ask him again anyway.  Maybe eventually I'll get through.

I've caught him lurking on the forums on occasion, so there's hope

If he wins BBEANS or something (a very real possibility at this point) I'll insist on it.  'Twould be a shame to win BBEANS without ever even posting in the thread... like the championship just disappears into a void...

Good fights, looks like you took a few ideas from BBEANS.  I don't mind, they're not copyrighted.

Why is your orbit cam so high in the Robot Wars arena?  Mine is nearly at floor level.  Unless that's the F10 cam.  In which case you could zoom in a bit more... it's hard to see some of the details, like whether or not LRA2 has any legitimate complaints about the AI.

Cross-post from my showcase, just to complete this thread...

I'm not liking my chances here.  Too many bots with strong armor/weapons protecting the top of the chassis *cough*Sage*cough*.  Or else bots with better wedges than mine.

Ah well, it's worth it just for the sake of having the only hammer.  I'll be happy if I can just land a couple good hits on my opponent.  And I might have a chance against some of the shell spinners being entered.

Discussion / Should DSL3 be backwards compatible?
« on: June 28, 2009, 09:25:36 PM »
Well it looks like you all mostly agree not to bother with backwards compatibility.  Good, that makes my job slightly easier.

Now to address some various, quite legitimate worries:

Quote from: Naryar;46201
Yes it should be backwards compatible.

I don't want to rebuild entirely the 200+ bots of the upcoming NAR AI pack because of non-compatibility.

EDIT: My post here is probably in vain... the no will most likely win.

Don't worry; DSL3 has grown to such a massive project that it will be a long time yet before it's ready for release, even with help (which I will start trying to recruit once the replicas are mostly out of the way and I have a better idea of what needs to be done).  Also, see quote below.

Quote from: JoeBlo;46216
that's a good point maybe the time has come for tournaments to now specify Stock, DSL 2 or DSL 3 (and maybe S32's Catagore) maybe even freedom should be opened up in DSL 2 and keep realism for DSL 3

Well of course, I'm not going to say, "Now that DSL3 is out DSL2 is obsolete and no one should play it."  It will actually be impossible to install it over DSL2 if it's not backwards compatible, so I imagine people will still play DSL2 on occasion.

Quote from: R0B0SH4RK;46439
I'm starting to think that DSL 3 would be different enough to operate under a different title than DSL. In other words, a whole new mod rather then a patch to an existing one.

Except it still uses almost all of the same components, arenas, and replica bots (albeit somewhat modified) as the original DSL.  I'm just changing some game mechanics; very little is actually brand-new from DSL1 to DSL2 and DSL2 to DSL3 (so far).

If I remade all new components and arenas... bleh.  That might mean several years before DSL3 is done.

So I think it stays DSL3 for now.

You should have entered Terrific Terrorification in BBEANS; you would have been the only 4WD VS and it's probably better than the black plague.  Plus it looks pretty cool.

Worst Way 2 Die needs more weapons; 4 razors only cuts it on a popup and that's just barely scraping by.  Maybe you could move the discs lower so that they protect the chassis more, therefore eliminating the need for a ram plate?  It also looks like you could use a smaller chassis to get more weapon weight.  But it's a cool and original design, especially for a MW.

I honestly have no idea how I won. I was looking at the losers bracket and though i was going to go 1-2 because I would be raped by Bounty Hunter and the BFR.

Did I get under him or did something weird happen?

You got under Bounty Hunter in two of the three fights.  I was surprised too; I thought for sure Bounty Hunter had better wedges and would easily get under Cocytus.

Was there a way to make up for lost possible wins with the bye round? or was that something we gave up by automatically winning?

There is no way to get "makeup wins".  I'd like to have some way for bots to benefit more from byes, but I can't think of anything fair and effective.  I used to give bots a free win in BBEANS1, but decided that wasn't really very fair.

Actually, never mind, I just thought of something while I was typing that.  I could possibly have a really tough bot, like AC or Bumble Bee or something, and have bots fight it in the bye round.  You'll automatically advance to the next round, but you'll only get a win on your record if you beat it (if you lose, then nothing happens.)

I could even still do it for this tournament, maybe have all the bots that got byes fight the champion after it's over for a chance at extra wins.  Unless the champion got a bye, then that might get complicated.  Thoughts?

Hmm, hmm... #2 and #3 are also very well built.  It's a tough decision.

I hate to pick what everyone else is picking, I really do, I like to be different buuuuuut...

I vote for #8

+respect for making a juggler that doesn't look a lot like NWB.  I've always wanted to do that.

Edit: What is up with #9 anyway?  I thought this was stock HW hybrid?  And here we have a DSL AW non-hybrid...  perhaps a joke by ACAMS?

Another thing is why do I keep getting the short end of the stick? Three vets in a row! And next is R4. I think I might be smocked.

Hey, I wouldn't call going 3-0 with 7 KO's "the short end of the stick".  That's a pretty impressive run.

What I find amusing is Seism 13's opponents.  First Mace in da face, then Chernobyl, and next round, Absolute Chaos!  It's had to fight all three of the 36-mace spinners in the tournament.  I would call it bad luck, except for how thoroughly Seism 13 owned those bots.

I gotta say the bot with the worst luck would be Cardiac Arrest.  Vertical spinners are not friendly to rammers, and CA got two of them.

Click I think you got my rank wrong, unless each of the multibots count as a KO.

I got a KO on both in the first round, lost in the second, then knocked out one of them and got a WBP in the third round.

Each bot in the cluster does count as a KO.  So if you KO both, you get 2 KO's for that round.  I just don't count WBP's if you KO'd at least one of the bots.

Oh, and the winner's bracket round 3 is up now!  Basically what you'd expect for the winner's bracket: lots of good fights, and some surprises.

Discussion / Should DSL3 be backwards compatible?
« on: June 23, 2009, 11:36:01 PM »
So far I have been trying to make DSL3 backwards compatible with DSL2 bots, so all your old favorites will still work.  But the farther I go with it the more I am tempted just to make it all new and not worry about the old bots.

Some cool things I could do if DSL3 didn't need to be backwards compatible:

-The NPC motors would no longer be able to pass through the chassis (that really doesn't make any sense that they can), they would have symmetrical attach points, and they would have just one GMF instead of having different components for left, right, normal, etc.

-The big batteries would be heavier and there would be more of a difference between them and the little batteries in terms of power.  I also have a theory that could very well solve the "spin motors don't drain as much electricity as they're told to" problem, so the big batteries would actually be necessary on bots with powerful motors.

-I've been experimenting with the "friction" setting in the gmf file, and I think that by increasing the friction of all the components and the floor in all the arenas, a new level of realism could be achieved where you have to think a lot more about balance and weight distribution.  With higher friction, parts of your bot that drag on the ground (primarily WEDGES--I've heard more than one person complain about the dominance of wedges in DSL?) will significantly slow your bot down, and perhaps interfere with turning.  In order to make your bot drive smoothly, you will need to either use 4WD or use casters (which I will make frictionless to facilitate sliding) to prop up the dragging parts on your bot.  Imagine that!  Using casters for their intended purpose!  Also, you will need to keep your wedges slightly off the ground to keep them from dragging, like in real life.  In theory, at least.  I haven't fully tested the concept but it has promise.

-I will be able to streamline the components and weed out ones that are no longer used on the new replicas (like the old version of the Hypno tooth and the old Minion disc), hide some of those weird stock parts that have no business being stock like Firestorm's air tank and Typhoon's flag, and perhaps make a few new AI parts available for stock.

Of course, if I did any of those things, it would completely mess up a lot of DSL2 bots you tried to use in DSL3.  Some might just crash.  It's a high price to pay, having to start all over with few working bots, but all those benefits I mentioned might just make it worthwhile...  what do you all think?  I'm in favor of just throwing backwards compatibility out the window, but if there's a large backlash from the community, I won't do it.

Note that even if I do make DSL3 not backwards compatible, I will still keep most of the same parts, armor, and stats, so you won't have to TOTALLY re-learn everything.  You'll just have to rebuild most of your bots.

Goose told me before April Fools day that he was going to release the bot exchange for real on April 3, after he did his joke.  So I would think it's at least started.

Also the obstacle race is a good idea and probably doable.  Makes me want to hurry up and finish BBEANS so I can get back to DSL...

Good bot, but those half sheets are way too weak to use as a wedge.  Once they fall off (and it won't take long) you'll have a hard time getting bots on top of the weapon, and the front of the chassis will be wide open.  Instead, you should just use more skirts, like on the bottom wedge.

Well on the servo's .txt file i see a gain (=torque) over 3K, but only 20 maxspeed... i dont understand.

The servos just glitch in this situation so they have no max speed, they just keep accelerating.

It's easy enough to do yourself.  Just make a tiny chassis with 2 servos, no batteries, and big counter-rotating discs.

Bump for a good cause.

This is just a friendly reminder to all you in Clash Cubes, to not forget to protect the top of your bot :icon_twisted:

It's a full-body hammer, in that the chassis and batteries swing with the weapons, and also act as a counterweight to help lift the ridiculously heavy hammer back up.  Also, because of the way it's built, I can power the hammer with four large JX bursts all working together, so it packs some serious punch behind it.  I'm pretty sure I couldn't get the same power out of a single Beta motor with a traditional hammer setup.

This is the bot I was originally calling Warwolf because it had a flail hammer, like a trebuchet, but that didn't work out very well so I switched to a static hammer.
