You need some kind of a target to hit in a jousting tournament.  Make some large, weak, custom component that must be present and accessible somewhere on every entry, and whoever knocks it off the other bot wins.  In the event of a tie then you could go by points.

The main problem would be AI'ing, though I'm sure there would be some way to do it.

HA!  TIMBER IS UNKILLABLE.  Even with just 3mm plastic armor.

...Of course, that doesn't count for much when you can't deal any return blows.

Good fight R0B0.

Dark horse of this tourney=Shinigami.  It's always entertaining and surprisingly good at hitting the opponent's weakest point.

Also, I'm surprised that Sky High got a win.  I thought that bot would be too unstable.  I guess one hit is sometimes all it takes.

Round 6 loser's bracket is up!

And, um, not much more to say than that.  Very good fights, but at this point they're all pretty good.

Also, a thought that occurred to me.  All the bots remaining in the winner's bracket are veterans.  Could a veteran, instead of a rookie, win BBEANS for the first time in the tournament's history?  Moreover, could it be a non-spinner?  (Both stock champions were HS's.)

Something serious is going on... ACAMS?

I tried visiting here earlier in the day and I got a broken link, along with Norton reporting a blocked intrusion attempt.

Now the main page appears to be just gone.  Deleted.  It's just the default directory that shows up when there is no index.

I just saw this on whatsthatbug.com, another site I frequent, thought it was pretty darn funny and slapped a FAIL on it.

Apparently those Google ad sites don't work on every site... :D

Hey, those are some nice pictures.  Crisp focus, reasonably high resolution, better than most people can do with a regular point and shoot camera.  How many shots did it take to get a good one of those little guys?

Insect/arthropod photography is kind of a hobby of mine... though as much as I like every other kind of bug, I must admit that spiders still inexplicably creep me out a bit.

I have a folder full of 268 jpg's on my computer (I just checked.)  Here's some of my better ones.  (Many of them are too big to post here.)

A bumblebee on a thistle in a park near my house:

A bee (I'm pretty sure she's a mining bee in the genus Andrena) coming out of her underground burrow.

A water strider walking on water:

A Mourning Cloak butterfly I just shot a couple weeks ago: (The Mourning Cloak is my favorite butterfly and I've always wanted to get a photo of one)

A cool katydid I found sunning on a path last fall:

A VERY lucky shot I captured of an Immigrant Green Leaf Weevil just as it was taking flight:

And, lastly, a jumping spider for Urjak.

Oh yeah, and also the click beetles in my avatar and sig are from my own photos

There's no reason that bot needs to start out upside down... I would think it would be simpler just to build it with a right side up chassis.

Also it's probably bad because of the tilted-up chassis.  Any bot with a tilted-up chassis will automatically have worse wedges because of the way driving in RA2 works (I'll save you the detailed explanation).  Conversely, any bot with a tilted-down chassis will, in theory, have better wedges.

Caster armor is good for trapping spinners, but the rest of the bot looks way too fragile, and maybe unstable too.  I would try and use less casters and more armor elsewhere.

One thing I must ask.
Why do you have that black anyway? Servos don't need power.

But the Snappers do.  I needed to have some way for the shell to do controlled movement if I was going to enter it in RAW2.  And I didn't want to use regular wheel drive because I didn't want the bot to be dependent on the shell's survival, and I feared it would reduce the effectiveness of the wedges.  So it hops around with the wedges instead.

OK everyone, I'll upload the bot files soon since there's been a lot of requests.  They are unavailable at the moment but you will get them eventually.

4-wheel drive is too fast for a big chained VS, in my opinion.  That weapon system isn't really built for charging and pinning bots.  Plus your bot is going to gyro dance any time you try turning at full throttle.

If you're using 4WD, I think it's better to use regular non-chained weapon motors, so they're less likely to stop and get stuck when you're pinning bots.

But it's a well built bot anyways.  You have good technique.  If anything, 4WD at least makes it original.

Yup I saw that, it has a lot of torque when it's retracting too.

At least I succeeded in entering an entertaining bot, if not a winning one.  But maybe I can still get lucky.

I never knew Timber can flip bots OOTA. o_O

Neither did I. o_O

It's smashed shell spinners hard enough to make them Mauler dance and flip over plenty of times, but I've never seen one flip that high.  Maybe something to do with how much mass it has spinning relative to the chassis and drive.  Either that or a partial Havok.

But alas, Timber needs more frontal armor... I underestimated how powerful SHW shell spinners can be.  If Timber could have got in a few more hits, I could have just kept taking off ED's side panels until it destabilized.

Also good fighting by Bob and Bill.  I didn't think they would stand a chance against Somebody, but they were just two chassis hits away from a win in that first round.

Edit: Aw crap, looks like I get ROBO in the losers bracket.  Even if I get under him (which I'm not confident I can do), he's got armor plates as well as his weapon protecting the chassis... going to be a tough fight for me :(

Round 4 winner's bracket is up!

The tournament is rapidly coming to a close now; we're at the point where there are only 4 fights per round, and there are only 16 bots still competing.  For those top 16 competitors: congratulations, being in the top 16 is no easy accomplishment.  There are many very good bots that didn't make it that far.

Note: you need to scroll down past the round 5 loser's bracket summaries in order to read about round 4.

I'm doing one right now. The problem is that the core refuses to go in the shell.

The two chassises can't actually touch each other.  You need about a half box (on the blueprint grid) of leeway space in order to get them to connect, but not wobble too much.  Also, the wheels can't touch the shell chassis or it won't be able to drive.

So it doesn't do that all the time.  Whew, that would be pretty scary if you could burn bots from across the arena.

Nice video by the way.

Try this?  There were some random spaces in your bindings and you don't need range on a poker...

Code: [Select]
   list.append(("Stinger","Omni",{'invertible':True,'nose':math.pi,'topspeed':99,'throttle':130,'turnspeed':2.5,'turn':60,'radius':0.3,'weapons':(1,2,3,4)}))
Also, check for spaces after "Fire" and "weapon" for the control and smart zone names.

That's weird.

Well... is the control wired to the piston?  Maybe you replaced it and forgot to re-wire it?

Is the smart zone in an easily accessible place?  Maybe try using an overly huge smart zone just for testing purposes.

Does the bot have air tanks?

Also posting the Bindings and maybe a picture of the bot would help.

Btw, whats a plus.disable?

It disables the bot's controls so they can't move or fire any weapons.  The exact syntax is

plus.disable(botID, 1)

to disable the designated bot's controls, or

plus.disable(botID, 0)

to enable the bot's controls.

Great bot.  I imagine it would be even more deadly as AI, since you could time the weapon firing to consistent precision.

I would say ditch the caster armor and use ram plates instead though, and use the extra weight to beef up the stoppers in front of the DDT's, since that part of the bot will be taking much more of a beating from HS than the front.  Maybe use a row of spikes instead of bracket wedges.

These are a couple of designs I was experimenting with as a possible RAW2 entry.

The first one, Symbiote Sheck:

1 Supervolt, DSA, no drive.  It hops around with the Snapper wedges and it can, uh, clamp, sort of, with those arms in the back... Yeah it's pretty useless.

The second bot, Symbiote Core:

2 DDT's, 8 razors, 2 Supervolts, 2WD HPZ, DSA.  It's a well-built popup, except the wedge is going the wrong way, so it can't hit anything.  It's better than Symbiote Sheck but it still can't beat anything bigger than an antweight.

Obviously, neither of these bots are any good on their own.  But put them together and you get...

Symbiote:

The idea here is to make a popup with an invincible armor shell around it.  The Sheck really only needs to function for a few seconds as it clamps around the Core, and after that it only serves as armor.  So it doesn't matter if it dies.  And here's the thing: even after the Sheck is KO'd, it STILL PROTECTS THE CORE!  A dead chassis is just as impenetrable as a working bot.  So it's basically like having caster armor on all sides.  The only way to damage the core after the two parts are connected is to hit the back (a small target), the bottom (harder to do than you'd think because it's a small target and the Sheck gets in the way), or to destroy the clamping arms so the Core pops out (happens most frequently of the three ways, since the extenders become exposed when the chassis gets dented).

It's not quite as effective as caster armor, though, because it's quite a bit heavier and I don't have weight for 4WD.  Without 4WD, Symbiote has a hard time KO'ing bots, even though it can theoretically survive indefinitely in the arena with Absolute Chaos.  And survival doesn't really count if you can't at least win by points.

I'm not going to use Symbiote in RAW2, though, because

-the two halves only have time to join up against slow bots and HS's.  Against any non-HS bot with HPZ drive, I have to do a plus.disable in Python in order to connect the two halves, which wouldn't be allowed in a tournament.

-it would be a beast to try and AI correctly.

-it's rather slow.

-it's quite laggy when the two halves are connected for some reason, and I know how annoying it would be for Sage to record matches with such a laggy bot.

-and finally, it's sort of a controversial design, since it acts more like a single heavyweight than two middleweights, and the Sheck is only barely capable of controlled movement.

But it's an interesting bot anyways.  I must admit I'm not the first one to make two bots that connect to each other like this; I know Firebeetle at least made 2 HW's that joined up back in the day.  I'm just the first one to make a bot that uses another bot as a meat shield
