Contests / Here is a little challenge: Get Creative Kiddies!
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:16:01 PM »
A POPDOWN!!!

Heh, actually this sounds like a cool idea... I think Psycolone was trying to inspire us with a similar contest a couple months ago, but nobody really showed interest.

I will see what I can come up with.  I hope Click pounces on this one too.

I can see where you guys are coming from... But, it was stated in the rules long ago that the matches would be 1 minute.  Saying that it is ghey now is kinda null.  If you objected with that rule why didn't you speak up before the tourney even started?

While, I too, like to see a match play out until carnage is fully achieved. But, these are Jonzu's rules and I think he just wanted to keep things short and simple for his first tourney.  So far he has done a decent job.

Maybe he will have longer match times for his next tournament.  It think he is just learning the ropes right now, so chill out.

Does it really matter though? I mean... its not like you get frequent flier miles or discounts at Denny's for being labeled an Advanced User or Veteran. Personally, I am more of a fan of the unique tags that have been given out over the years "Spamweight, Cheeseweight, etc etc."  I find those amusing and more meaningful.

Besides... there is only appx 30 of us on the forum that are here regularly... if half of them are labeled AU or Vet... the other half know better.  This place is not flooding with noobs that are going to be all starry-eyed over a members title.

Just my opinion... sorry if it offends anyone.  I am cranky from working three 14 hour workdays in a row...  *grrrrrr*.

Modifications / Chassis pack?
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:08:01 PM »
I was going to type this yesterday... but it seemed lame at the time.  However, now that I have thought about it some more I will toss the idea out there.

How about tournament hosts offering awesome stacked chassis' as prizes for tournaments?  I, honestly, would think that would be a great prize for winning. To get a trim chassis with 3 stacked blacks & a CB or something... all primed and ready to make an awesome HSer or something.  I dunno... Just a thought.

However, the GTM community found it easily and many have already asked questions about it.

It is a small internet world.  Especially in relation to robot combat games because as the years tick by, none of the game developers see the need to make a new game.  This, in turn, seems to keep the interest in RA2 mods steady.

Bravo for all your hard work.  Glad you are having fun making the mod, who cares if anyone disagrees.  It is your own project and your own time, so enjoy doing it. :D

DSL TC Showcases / Battle Shots
« on: November 09, 2009, 05:58:15 PM »
Actually you are both right. The perms are for the drive and the drums (drums inner mount, wheels outer mount) I am trying to make a decent drum bot that can roll on top of another bot and grind its way down.  But, I don't want the bot to be a crawler in the process... So far, the concept is not working out very well against some of the elite bots in the DSL pack. I might post some pics in my showcase if i get a moment.

I wish I could help... but my knowledge with this stuff is not all that good.

As a cheerleader though, I will say thanks for working on this project! You guys are awesome.

fixed :P

I think lack of a good explanation was the issue here, the controlled movement is still far form perfect, its probably on par with one wheeled spinners though, its only an idea I got while failing at making a one wheeled HS lol

glad we could work out everything and I apologize again, I want to maintain my status of residential nice guy :P

On a final note... I would like to point out that Joe plays by the rules every time.  He thinks outside the box and people find that a bit threatening. Hell, half of the time I slap my forehead and say "Dammit! Why didn't I think of that!?"

Outside the box thinkers are often feared and will take a decent amount of heat. (Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Gandhi, etc etc.)

Ultimately, he plays within the rules of the tournament and we should respect Jonzu's assessment in letting bots compete upon his inspection. (Kudos for standing by your original opinion and letting the bot stay in the tournament)

In the future: if you forsee a possible loophole that might be exploited in a tournament... suggest a rule before the entries are accepted. If this AW tourney also had a rule that required at least 2wd for every bot, we would not be having this discussion.  Also, maybe the BBEANS rules need to be refined some? like an actual test that can be run to determine the mobility capabilities of an entry? (If bot1 can reach block on other side of arena before x amount of time? or something like that)

/end rant

Discussion / Skirt Hinge Wedge
« on: November 08, 2009, 07:49:24 AM »
While on the subject... why are skirt wedges even allowed? I mean, DSL should be about realism and IMO skirt wedges (especially ones on burst motors) are not something you would find on a real bot today.  I think it is kinda unfortunate that at some point, someone discovered a loophole in the "realistic" rules because skirt wedges do not break the DSL rules... but most of them break real life physics rules if you think about it.

Analysis:

The Last And Dead Unicorn: Chassis over-exposure... should die pretty quick.
ChewCube: Sawblade wont do much for damage... might offer decent protection though.
Mercury Drone: Factoid: Skin is actually Mercurys Planet surface.
Degausser: If this was a 1v1 tourney, I think it would fare well... but being flanked might tie up that tribar pretty well.
Triceratops: Best of tourney.
WBWAPS: Nice design. I think it will fare well.
Stick Murderous Hummingbird: same as Degauss... but with exposed drive that will take a beating.
Hammerhead: Looks cool. Will not do much damage though.
Placebo: Purple chassis good for snack (nom nom nom)
Sheer Death: At first i thought it was 2wd and I couldn't figure out how. But... another 1wd AW that will probably show no controlled movement due to the placement of the wheel.
The 5 Year Old Arsonist: Astoundingly good for Badnik. I am impressed. Should do well.
Centrifugal Force: If it wins there will be an uproar... but I am curious to how well it shows controlled movement.
One Spike Wonder: One spike to rule them all? Probably not.
Black Hole's Revenge: A+ for being different... B- for overall effectiveness.
Hypno Ant: Cool looking and original design. I hope it fares well!
CombatAnt: no comment

Congrats Ounce. You got me back for the doomed bots tourney matchup.  It was a close match.  I should have invested more time in my bot too. More damage from Falchions weapon would have been nice. I wish I had lobbed off a wheel somewhere :P  Good luck in the next round.

Yes! That was an excellent matchup.
