Contests / Name That Bot! Contest Idea

A person makes a name and people make a bot using the exact name and we vote, BOTM style.

That is actually a pretty good idea.  It's an interesting challenge making a bot based only on a name.  It has to be a cool sounding, interesting, and/or bizarre name though.  Like "Obstacle Force" or "Corn Flakes Box of Doom".  Or "Spinner from the west II"  Making a bot based on a name like "Destroyer" would kind of defeat the purpose.

Awful background for the splash, but the bot is very good.  I can't tell if the tribars are attached the low way or the high way, but I can tell you that the low undercutting way is better.

My bot, Accident Waiting to Happen, was originally built to be a servo-powered That Darn Dustpan! type bot like Jigsaw, but I couldn't get it to be any good.  It just didn't do enough damage before the weapon broke for one reason or another.  So I went with the high vertical flail spinner instead.

So you start the jaws in the closed position, and open them only to let bots in?  Interesting.  One of those things everyone has thought about, but no one actually does.  I think you need longer, curvier arms to clamp HS's.

And good job with Chaos Terminator.  It's amazing how much more you can do without that fourth Z-tek eating up weight.

I like the use of the Emergency wedge on Death Pattern, how it acts as both a wedge and armor.  Very efficient.  I just wish it had better than angle motor drive.  You have some extra weight; I bet you could do at least Redbird drive.

I agree that the HW would be good with 4WD.  But 6 DDTs all overlapping in one spot is pretty cool.  I imagine Noob Whacker is good at 1 hit KO's.

Let's see, so you need to lose about 31 kgs.  First of all, use shiny hub wheels instead of mini wheels, that will save you 10 kgs.  Use only one small wedge in the center of the bot--that will save you another 10 kgs.  You can put a T connector on top of the flipper to attach the spikes.  Finally, shortening the chassis will probably get you down to LW class.  If not, use lighter spikes on the flipper, or don't use them at all (they're really not doing much good there.)  Or use spikes instead of a small wedge, and make it a popup.

I'm not in the tournament, but hearing about it made me want to dust off some old bots for posting.

The bot I probably would have entered:

Aluminum armor, the rest is visible.  I had a thing for counter-rotating vertical spinners back then, before I realized that spinning them upwards was better.

Another tempting possibility, though it might be too good for a noob bot (well built at least... it has a surprisingly tight chassis).  I did make it before I joined the forums.

Aluminum armor, angle motor drive, HP Z-tek weapon.  4 flailing weapons.

The first bot of any class that I built when I first got RA2:

Titanium armor, the rest is visible.  I would only enter this in N00b Warz if the above 2 bots were too good.  Looks eerily like SFTW with those chew blades...

Oh, and the III is because Deathwatch I and II were RA1 bots.

And one last bot I'm just posting because.

I always liked this bot for the way the weapon can be either a hammer or a flipper, even though it wasn't very good even against the stock AI.  Titanium armor and the rest is visible.

Overall I'd say I knew what I was doing even in those early days, eh?  At least I built to the weight limit!

FBS_2 is basically the same as FBS_1, but with a feature where after a set amount of time with no damage being dealt, the AI will stop sit-and-spinning and chase the opponent.  It also uses the traditional Forward and LeftRight controls.

This is a great idea for a tournament.  I would totally enter if there was space; I played RA2 for at least a year before joining the forums, so I have a lot of old bots that would be fun to bust out.  Please do another one when this is over.

If I wasn't doing BBEANS all the time, I was thinking about doing something similar, only it would be a "Classic Bots" tournament where you have to enter a classic-style bot (not necessarily an old one).

Basically it would be no glitches allowed, no stacking allowed, no AI parts or Snapper II's allowed, and if you use small wedges, your bot has to be a pure flipper with no damaging weapons.

Something for the distant future...

One last update here.  I've combined the BBEANS5 results into the cumulative rankings, so now you can see how far up or down you've moved!

Good news: those of you who moved down didn't move very far score-wise, while a few of you shot up the rankings like an ICBM, sometimes doubling your score or more.

I also updated the Hall of Fame page.

I was about to vote for 3 when i noticed something. The wedges on #2 are different!

That takes skill. The person also took away all the color of each component in the bot. Splash sucks, skins ok, but the skill is more than anyone else.

Nice try, Mr. Subtlety.  But I think we can all recognize your art style...

I'm still surprised #2 has so few votes though.

So my vote is for #2.[/u]

OK, I know I said voting closes Sunday, but something came up, and now is close enough to Sunday.  (Also, it probably IS Sunday already for some of you.)  And a couple more votes aren't going to make a difference at this point.

This happened when me and FB were kids.  Like little kids.  I am seriously not making this up.

Firebeetle had a dream where a spaceship flew up to him and announced, "CHOOSE YOUR CEREAL."  It presented him with a box of Reese's Puffs and a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  He chose the Reese's Puffs.  He started eating them, but they tasted old and nasty, so he stopped.

Later--perhaps a year or so--in real life, we were sleeping over at a friend's house.  In the morning, we had cereal for breakfast.  Guess what kinds were available.  Yup, Reese's Puffs and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  Firebeetle remembered his dream and took the Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  I, however, chose the Reese's Puffs.  And get this:  the Reese's Puffs were old and stale and tasted like cardboard.  Meanwhile, FB said the Cinnamon Toast Crunch was just fine.

I think Firebeetle is some kind of prophet.

That is some amazing artwork SpyGuy.  You like bicycle parts, don't you.

Dare I say it...?  Your scorpion has an extra pair of legs; they have 8 legs but the front two are modified into claws.  And the Rose is actually a tulip.

But that's nitpicking; it's great work.

@Jack: Wow, a fellow hobby insect photographer.  If you have more pictures I'd be interested in seeing them.

You can actually do some incredible stuff with regular point and shoot cameras these days.  I use a Canon PowerShot A720IS with a close-up lens, and I am quite pleased with it.  Except when I want to photograph a bug indoors, or when I'm photographing something really tiny.  Then I wish I had a digital SLR with a ring flash.

They're not going to get hit with those razors in the way and the armor on the sides.

Nice bots; I wish you'd tested them before posting so I could know how effective the V shape on a piston is.  I haven't seen many (if any) bots that do that.

You're half there. Didn't edit the BOT file.

Custom armor then, applied in the bot lab.  Same difference.

Quote from: RedlineM203;61409
Would be useful if used legally though. Maybe you just want your bot to have a different chassis shine. Say like, the orangey-red of Plastic, but on a bot that should have (and actually can fit) DSA armor.

It's kind of hard to see in the BBEANS videos, but Firebeetle did that with Seism 13 and Blue Moon.  Seism 13 has an orangey-red shine with DSA, and Blue Moon has a bluish shine with a reflection map, like a Shiny Hub wheel.

This is a legal form of bot file editing because the BBEANS rules say, "The only thing you can do to your bot outside the bot lab is skin (paint) it."  Editing the armor shine is part of skinning.

Someone had to do it.  Might as well be me.

I did everything in my power to give VAtBH good wedges, since Insult to Injury has such an uncanny wedge.  DDT's, rubber wheels, forward weight distribution, lots of ballast...  and without the weapons attached (if it's just a chassis with wedges) it can get under anything.  NWB?  No problem, just slides right under.

WITH the weapons, though, it only has a "pretty good" wedge.  It can get under bots like 3-2-1 Blastoff and SurgicalStrike and Shadow Tyrant, but NWB is beyond its abilities.  Apparently, having a low center of gravity must be a factor in having a good wedge.  It's still a decent bot, though.  Good at throwing bots OOTA, and pinning wedges against the wall.

Also, here are the bots I entered in RAW2.  Though if I end up teaming with somebody, I will probably change my bot.

Trial: Plastic armor, 1 Supervolt, regular Z-tek drive, 15 razors.  An undercutter good at beating other HS, like the HW version, Charybdis (it even uses almost the same chassis).  It can easily beat any HS except other undercutters with more weapons (like the SC4 Man-at-Arms) or long overcutting spinners (like Dizzy Bees or PickUpStix in PYS AI).  And, like Charybdis, it's bad with popups.

Error: DSA, 6 casters on the bottom, 1 Supervolt, angle motor drive, 15 razors.  Like the HW Scylla, it's an overcutter with lots of downward-pointing razors for tearing up popups, along with caster armor for defense.  It can beat any wedged bot in Starcore and the PYS AI, but it's bad with other HS because it lacks sheer numbers of weapons.

The bots are designed to complement each other, obviously.  When fighting an HS team, Trial does most of the work, while when fighting a popup team, Error makes itself useful.  Sort of a trial and error approach to fighting, hence the names.

Oh, and those battles in the splash were AI'd

Obviously he just figured out how to .bot edit stronger armor.

Firebeetle made a bot like Punchbag called "Barney Block" or something like that.  It was just a huge box painted with pictures of Barney the Dinosaur on all sides, with 4WD angle motors, and here's the catch: an unbalanced spinner in the middle of the chassis so it could keep bouncing to avoid immobility.  Oh, and near-invincible armor, of course.

Then he found some online game with a couple of newbies, joined with the username " " (just a single space) so no one could see him, and took it out, saying nothing.  Each person thought the other one was using the Barney Block.  It was pretty funny.  Little did they know there was a ghost in their midst.

And then they had to deal with this invincible, un-immobilizable (is that a word?) Barney Block running around :D

^ Major understatement.

With a wedge that shallow, you hardly need any extra armor at all.

That is anything but a N00B bot.  Aside from the fact that you just made a chassis and filled it with components.  But the end product makes it look like you made the chassis around the components, like everyone around here always says to do.

How good are the wedges?  I like how you got 3 of them on there.
