How are things coming along Ribbs?  Everything working out ok? Do we need more signups for loaners in order to progress with this tourney?

You probably would want Tornados over Grannies. Same weight but grippier.

Tried 'em. But then the bot was not invertible. I am not a big fan of Grannies... but they allow the bot to still move around if it gets flipped over.  If i realllly wanted to use Tornados, I would have to rebuild the bot and make it smaller.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Heh, I have been testing Haphazard 2 against Hworf in the regular battle arena and this happens:

I will get hworf pinned between the wedge and potters wheels... grind away for a few seconds and then *poof* Haphazard is transported to the murky depths beneath the arena.  At first I could not figure out where the bot got glitched to, so I switched to orbit cam and found Haphazard spinning slowly in dark space. Hworf just stays on the arena floor avoiding being counted out when the timer kicks on.  The countout timer does not kick on for my bot though.  Really odd.

After all the revisions and testing this is the final version that I ended up submitting to Joe for CC3.  I shot for durability and control over other factors.  With piglets the bot does not do as much damage as faster motors... but it is more durable in the long run, so the chances of survival are higher.  I also stuck with the rear wedge because (as Joe noted) this design might help the bot considering the arena attributes.

The wheel change turned out to be nice and I also took out the extenders in favor or DSL bars.  Had some weight left over so i threw a hinge with polycarb on the underbelly for a little bit of protection there.

Yup, some one did get me one this Christmas. The picture looks old because I'm using my moms old Olympus.
@Sonny, I did want one.

Awesome, welcome to the Dreamcast club then.  I have 2 of them (one for parts if you need anything) and appx 100 VMU based games.  My old school nintendo library is on an emulator for Dreamcast. It is the best emulation platform out there.

Here is a nice reference site for you to look at:
http://dcemulation.org/?title=Welcome_to_DCEmulation!

People are still making homebrew games for the system.  If you get a chance play "Skies of Arcadia" on Dreamcast. It is incredibly fun.

In Paint:
Please go to "Image"
pull down the menu and choose "attributes"
make sure the button is selected for "pixels"
and change the height and width to something bearable... like 700x700 or lower.

Like this:

oh... and save it as a PNG instead of BMP...
BMPs are sinful.

Discussion / Realistic rules for DSL
« on: December 26, 2009, 11:47:07 AM »
I was going to post this in Sage's showcase... but I didn't want to derail his thread or encourage people to talk about this subject because it would be rude to fill his showcase with anything but comments about his bots.

Anyways:

It really is kinda too bad that the collective "powers that be" had not made an official rule set for DSL back when the game was fresh and new.  Nowadays, the popularity is just not strong enough to justify making a specific realistic rule-set for every builder to use as a guide. (kinda like how Battlebots has specific builders rules)

Plus with the upcoming release of a new DSL... it makes it not worth it to establish ground rules now.

However, since there is a new DSL in the works, should we make a point to establish rules on building for realistic tournaments when the release hits?  Those rules can evolve and change as we learn more... They can be established by collective vote or something.

Some rules that come to mind would be:

-Weight limits of what you can attach to certain weak material extenders.
-Valid uses of hinges/skirts/etc
-Possibility of "Judge panels" that can reject bots that are submitted based on how much the bot sways from being IRL realistic vs exploiting game mechanics.
-Having separate rule-sets that govern tournaments.
  • DSL "anything goes" ruleset
  • DSL "must look and be built based on IRL physics" ruleset
  • DSL "????" ruleset  etc etc
I, personally, would like to see stock as being like a builders playground.  Anything goes.  But DSL is really, fundamentally, designed to give us a more realistic experience.  I think it is valuable to try to tame the realism factor for DSL or at least establish a fixed set of rules for the future when the new DSL version is released.  If we work with Click on this... the "official rules" could be posted on the website for reference.

I realize that making such "rules" would not please everyone, which is why I encourage that we make two separate rule sets for future installments of DSL that lean in either direction.  "Ultra Realistic" rules and "Not-so Realistic" rules.

Thoughts? Input? ideas?

Uncalled for Jack.Uncalled for.

I just feel like he is messing with us. I dunno... something about this dude just doesn't seem right.  I mean... he posted pictures earlier in the thread that were normal and fine... why would he punish us with this 3500x3500 sized stuff other than to get a rise out of us?

It's annoying and I am calling him out for it.  (and no... I don't think it's really Reier. But I do think he is being a troll)
