Modifications / NAR AI pack releases !
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:59:48 PM »
*Click realizes he has hardly any good DSL HW's*

Nice work on this pack, it's good to have so many tough new DSL opponents.  There haven't been any other custom DSL AI packs before this.

Nice balance too, with a good amount of hammers and even a few oddballs (e=mc2, Scavenger) mixed in with the expected popups and spinners.

The only things I miss are WreckTangle (that bot is too fun to tear apart), the original Velociraptor (the new one is better, but doesn't look half as cool), and the original Industrial Coal Miner (I liked the three-disc drill setup; makes it different from ordinary face spinners).

I haven't even fought a lot of the bots yet, but all the ones I've fought work right except The Machine (in Orcish Power) which is wired with a switch control for the spinner.  And 123savethewhales is right about Smelter, the flamethrowers DO run out of juice pretty fast, though that's not a huge issue.  They need to be wired to an analog control in order to fire continuously.

Also, the melty brain SnS's are kind of laggy.  But cool.  And very tough.

Sooo...JubJub

It took several tries for me to beat SFTW with Flaying Mantis (the bot the SC4 Jubjub Bird is based off of).  The bot pushes itself up whenever it hits SFTW, and tips over backwards.

I'm taking a break for a while...but there will be a season 2.

Awesome.  I won't miss out next time!

I like how this tournament is set up as single-elimination rumbles, so you can get it done really fast.  Helps the "just-for-a-laugh" mood and eases some of the usual tension associated with tournaments.

And I bet JAWS could have beat SFTW if the saw was spinning downwards... though hammers ARE surprisingly ineffective against it, because of the tall chassis.  You try fighting SFTW with a LW hammer sometime.  Not as easy as you'd think.

OK sorry for the wait everybody, but it's over now!

Click here to get Hammer of Judgment

I've added HoJ and (finally) the precision blueprint grids to my downloads page.

I've got to say FB did an awesome job, I just tried Hammer of Judgment and it is arguably more fun than Hammer of Justice, and definitely cooler looking.

I used D'Legend Killer chassis.

AKA Microwhirl's chassis...

Don't think I wouldn't recognize my own bot's chassis and component setup.  It's OK though, as long as you change it up enough.

Advice for HMRT2: The E-tek has two attach points on the axle, one high and one low.  Try using the low one.  The weapon will hit more stuff and the bot will also be more stable.

Putting some kind of extender or spike on top of the bar SHOULD help it self right.  It doesn't have to be long, a 20 cm extender or a Typhoon spike should do.  That pretty much always works on any bot with a two-ended bar.  The only reason I can think of that it wouldn't work is that the bot is so tall.

The pinks don't give it enough power to fire the Snappers, but it is enough to power the drive for a 3 minute match.  The Snappers don't need to be fired anyway.

Still the coolest hammer bot ever IMO.

That may change after this month's BOTM

Anyways.

After redoing the AI on all the BBEANS1 bots for the BBEANS AI pack, I realized that Event Horizon 2 isn't as good as it used to be.  So I rebuilt the design from the ground up, and this is what came out.

DSA, 3 small batteries, 12 razors.  Invertible.

A decent, although not spectacular bot.  Still better than Event Horizon 2 though.  The main issue is with the wedge--I can't get it to be really good, even if I use ballasts or if I straighten the Snappers.  Also, it sometimes doesn't drive straight in reverse.  But it's good against any bot it can get under, and some HS's.

I have the body of the Snappers facing forward like that to improve weight distribution, if you're curious.  I also had some extra weight, so I threw a random baseplate anchor with nothing on it in the wedge to act as a bit of ballast.  If I took that out and also went with 2 batteries (which I think would be possible) I could have some considerable extra weight to work with, BUT, I don't know what to do with it.

Packie looks good.  Good armor, good weapons, good (presumably) wedge.  The important thing now is to get 4WD on it.

Modifications / Adding objects to an arena...
« on: September 19, 2009, 05:46:18 PM »
I think he means how to use Python to make them appear and disappear.

The code for that is

Code: [Select]
self.AddXtraSound("Obstacle", "arenas\\crates\\crates.gmf", "metal", "Sounds\\crate.wav")
"Obstacle" is the name of the object.  Can be anything.  Then you put in the path for the gmf you want to add.  "metal" is always constant.  The last thing is the path for the sound effect when you hit the object.

To remove extras, you do

Code: [Select]
self.RemoveXtra("Obstacle")
Alternatively, you can do

Code: [Select]
self.AddXtra("Obstacle", "arenas\\bbeans\\redlights.gmf", "metal")
if you don't want the added objects to make any sound.

Hi all,

(if you want my TLDR point, just read the bold stuff)

While re-AI'ing Reier's Toxin Ant, I could never figure out how to reduce the spinning the bot does while attempting to ram other bots. I don't think Reier intended for TA to be a thwacker, but no matter what I do - reduced the turn speed, the radius, invertible = true, nothing seems to stop the useless flailing.

I think this is more of a problem with the bot than with your AI'ing.  There was a bot in BBEANS3, New Catfish 3, that just doesn't drive well no matter how you AI it.  It's constantly spinning out of control.

I found that the spinning is minimized, however, if you use a very low 'Turn' (not 'turnspeed', although that should be low too) in the Bindings, like 10 or 20.  The reduced turn throttle makes any sudden change in direction less extreme and more manageable for the AI.  The bot will probably never drive perfectly, though.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

I realise that starting Micro Mayhem was a major mistake in my "life" as a GameTechMods forum member; with no prior practice besides AI'ing my own TP/R-series DSL2.1 face spinners, I failed to realise how difficult it truly was to create bindings that make the Micro Mayhem bots drive with reasonable competence.

That's how you learn to AI.  If the BBEANS1 match videos still existed, you would be able to see just how awful some of the bots' AI was back then.  Trident and Straight Shooting in particular, since that was before FB made the improved rammer AI.  I've gotten better at AI'ing since then.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

I don't like seeing bots lose because I ****ed up a little detail I might've missed.

Neither do I, but sometimes it's unavoidable.  Sometimes it's a builder's error rather than a host's error.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

The more I try to get Toxin Ant to just ram stuff without spinning like a thwacker afterwards, the more my confidence leaves my mind, and I think to myself, "What the **** is the point?"

It's been two months since I tried to correct my incompetence - I think I just got more stupider, if that's even a freaking word.

I guess I ought to stop trying to be cool, since it is useless. Maybe it's time I pack up my anime schoolgirl backpack and just leave GTM. I guess I'm just not cool enough to belong here.

Not being able to AI an un-AIable bot has nothing to do with being cool or uncool.

Nobody ever said you weren't cool.

And this forum is full of uncool people.  Being "cool" is overrated.  Cool people become slaves to the demands of culture and peer pressure.  I'm willing to bet that if we did a poll, most people would admit that they don't consider themselves "cool".  Myself included.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

Since someone really cared, perhaps I can carry on with Micro Mayhem, even though TA's AI seems to drives like a dumb bitch. Most of you care though,

Fixed.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

even though I've got all four of the Second Round matches filmed already. Most of them are pretty boring and predictable though; I guess maybe BW rumbles weren't exactly the best idea for a tournament in the first place.

Don't dangle those match videos in front of us and not post them!  It's like holding a carrot in front of a rabbit and snatching it away at the last second.

And BW rumbles are a great idea.  A refreshing change from the usual 1-on-1 format, and BW's are small enough that it doesn't get laggy.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

Should I finally pack up my anime schoolgirl backpack and leave?

No.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

Or is it really okay to carry on even with such critical issues?

I wouldn't call a total of two AI mishaps "critical issues".  Carry on.

Quote from: takatsukiyayoi;67139

And if I do carry on, will any of you help me to fix the issues?

Cheers,
Yayoi.

I think if you posted the AI of the bots in question, people would be more than willing to offer suggestions.

Oh, and some unsolicited advice: you might want to seek professional help in real life.  You sound like you might be depressed.  I've been there and it's no fun.

Name in green if bots are sent.

BOTS MUST BE IN BY SEPTEMBER 20th!

This is why I register people once they send their bot and not when they post saying they want to enter.

If there's still a bunch of empty spots tomorrow, will you open registration for people not on this list?  Or just go on with a smaller bracket.  Or perhaps give people the option of splitting up teams and entering two of their own bots, if they want.

...Wait, your own name isn't green?  How does that work?

Update to Slaying Mantis V.

It's now self-righteous!  Those rear samurai swords aren't just decorations anymore--I attached them to the back of the claws so it can flip itself over when it's on its back or side.  The process is a bit clumsy, but it can do it.

I also tweaked the claws a bit.  I got rid of the mostly decorative spike strips and added another razor.  It has four razors per claw now, for a total of 8.  Powerful enough to get 3-hit KO's on an exposed chassis.

A bit of extra weight which I think I will use for a 10kg ballast in the back, to make it a little bit less prone to tipping forward.

The insides are the same as the original Slaying Mantis V.

Mercenary looks great now.

Heaven's Curse needs bigger discs.  Chained VS greatly benefit from having large-diameter weapons; you don't get enough grab-and-throw action with small ones (which is what you want with chained motors; constant grinding will bring them to a quick stop).

On the other hand the wedges probably wouldn't be as good with bigger discs.  Maybe medium-sized discs?
