Off-Topic Discussion / Re: GTM REVOLUTION THREAD
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:08:04 PM »
While I'm not thrilled with Naryar's early use of his mod powers, I have to say this is a little premature to be questioning his abilities. I mean, he's been a global mod for five days. And it's not as if this place has absolutely gone to heck in that time either. We've had a harmless prank that lasted one day, a closure of a thread at the request of it's author and a couple of far too harsh warnings. All in all, no big deal.

I do think that we need to get some things straight, however. Naryar, what you view as spam is viewed by the rest of the forum members as harmless discourse. Thus, your warnings earlier to Smashysmashy and NateF are absolutely laughable and entirely unwarranted. The standards you seem to have are neither shared nor desired by the rest of the community, and are generally viewed as far too harsh, extreme and unreasonable, as evidenced by the existence of this thread.

Remember: you're a moderator, not a one-man legal system. Your job is to ensure that things on the forum operate smoothly in a way that satisfies the community. Your job isn't to dictate the law and punish as you see fit. You're a policeman, not a tyrant. This means that you enforce the standards that the community decides are the best and the most productive, not to operate on your own agenda and mold Gametechmods into your ideal image as you seem wont to do.

So, what does this mean? This means that while we still don't want excessive spam cluttering the showcases, one or two offtopic posts should not count as "spam." "Spam" should be defined as posts that do not add any content to the thread topic, are deliberately off-topic, AND are not addressing and previous posts in the thread. So even if a member makes an off-topic comment, it isn't necessarily spam if it is in conversation with another member. Of course, excessive off-topic posts are also an undesirable outcome, but raising a members warning level is a step that is too extreme. Instead, if and only if an off-topic conversation persists (say, lasts more than 5-7 posts), a written warning of "back on topic, guys" should suffice. After which, any posts still off-topic (within the same thread and a reasonable time frame) may be punished by, lets say, a 5% warn level for each consequent post.

While the above is just a thought, I strongly suggest you use it or a similar system to keep the discontent with your moderation from growing to unmanagable amounts.

Not sure where you got your facts from...

Of course you're "right." The rules that are outlined make the SYD plow seem to be illegal, although its illegality makes no sense. This is why I brought the issue up in the first place. However, you being "technically right" has absolutely no bearing on this argument. You being "technically right" is a precondition for this problem to arise. Therefore, when people say that "you're right," it's meaningless since it's not addressing the issue here. The problem is that there is a glaring oversight in the rules that should be ammended. You believe that the rules should absolutely be set in stone and unable to be changed under any circumstances. I'm saying that this is dumb.

This isn't a sweeping change, it's a minor ammendment. Hell, MNB, the guy who wrote and formulated the rules, has already demonstrated that he'd be willing to stand by this change. There is absolutely no good reason why the SYD plow should remain illegal. If you can't show me a convincing argument as to how allowing this change will violate the intention of the rules, then any arguments against this amount to little more than "no because I said so."

---
By the way, I have my entry completed, skinned and AI'ed. This silliness is the only thing keeping me from sending it in to MNB.

[By the reaction of this thread, we seem to have reached a majority consensus that the view I share with many of you is perfectly acceptable anyways.
Majority? Where?

Well, apart from you and I, four others have adressed this argument. Let's take a look at their responses:

Just send it I guess. I doubt anyone will care.
I agree with R0B0 and I stand by his point.
I agree with you too, R0B0
R0B0, I agree with you

By my count, that's not just a majority, that's everybody but you.

You say that you just want people to follow the rules. That's fine. I want people to follow the rules too. However, I'm pointing out that the rules are flawed and I'm suggesting that they're ammended to fix this flaw. Barring any ammendments, especially in the case of accidental oversights like this, is just irrational. If we never ammended anything, laws now would be the same as they were in Dark Age Europe.

I'm not asking MNB to allow samurai swords of bear claws or ninja stars, I'm only asking him to allow a different colour of snowplow. It's well within the spirit and intention of the rules, so there is no good reason to disallow it.

Didn't you two war about the 36 mace c**p?

Fairly sure the only person who ever went to war with anything to do with a 36HS was Venko denouncing their use in BBEANS 5. Then, he went and used one anyways. And lost.

SM is just mad or being annoying or something.

He's just gaming the system. No big deal.

Oh, and GK, you hold the power here. If you agree with me, it is well within your right to modify the rules so that they more accurately reflect the spirit of the law, not this logicless, irrational "we will obey ONLY the letter of the law" notion. By the reaction of this thread, we seem to have reached a majority consensus that the view I share with many of you is perfectly acceptable anyways. I don't see any reason as to why SYD plows should continue to be banned, as their use is still well within what the rules intend.

As trivial as it is, SM does have a point.

Just BFE the regular plows on. If you can't send it to me, I can.

I would agree with SM if SYD plows weren't ABSOLUTELY FUNCTIONALLY IDENTICAL to regular plows. We're not talking about replacing hammer heads with boxing gloves, or spike strips with samurai swords, we're talking about the exact same component with a different skin. So no, he doesn't have any point. At all.

And the SYD plows fit with the motif of the bot much better :3

OR I could exploit a loophole the rules and say that the SYD plow isn't really an AI part, but just a re-named and re-skinned snowplow. Since you can allow a "custom snowplow skin," and the SYD plow is only really a skin, it should therefore technically be legal.

I really don't want to have to redo my bot just to change the snowplows to other functionally identical snowplows :/

^ Except that Bear claws aren't allowed.

Question for MNB: since E-wedges are legal, can SteelYardDog plows be legal too, since they're just re-skinned snowplows?

i was actually better than sage at ra2 for about 2 days guys

Minus the seeing Sage and Luigica join part. Scrap, JD and I joined not too long after IIRC. Speaking of which, why don't MNB and JD have veteran titles yet?

Eeehhh, didn't like White so I went back to Gold.

Team:
Lvl. 52 Feraligator
    - Slash
    - Surf
    - Bite
    - Ice Punch

Lvl. 51 Haunter
    - Hypnosis
    - Dream Eater
    - Curse
    - Shadow Ball

Lvl. 54 Ursaring
    - Thunderpunch
    - Ice Punch
    - Rest
    - Sleep Talk

Lvl. 48 Houndoom
    - Flamethrower
    - Bite
    - Faint Attack
    - Sludge Bomb

Lvl. 53 Ho-oh
    - Fly
    - Recover
    - Sacred Fire
    - Earthquake

Lvl. 55 Dragonite
    - Twister
    - Dragonbreath
    - Slam
    - Surf

The movesets aren't finalized on a lot of them (only Haunter and maybe Ursaring), and I don't really like using Ho-oh since it's a legendary. Probably shouldn't have taught Ho-oh earthquake either, since it's now my anti-electric pokemon, making it a total glass cannon xD

Well, since his Strandbeests were my inspiration for building it, I tried to emulate them as best I could. It's pretty close to it from the designs I've seen on Youtube, except I needed some supports.

Will be designing new legs for it today, hopefully so it can walk without any type of supports.

WELL GUYS I got bored last night. And then I got some inspiration. And then I got out all of my K'nex and built a working walker :D

I also have a video of it in action that's unfortunately sideways, and this stupid netbook doesn't have the capacity to run any sort of video editing software. Does anyone know if Youtube lets you re-orient your videos? If so, I'll upload it.

EDIT: Never mind about the video, I'll have it up shortly.

Found a working rom for White on Monday. Team is pretty low level right now, I basically have a lvl 22 Dewott, lvl 19 Blitzle and a lvl 19 Tympole. Still looking to fill out my team but with some more type coverage. I'm at Pinwheel forest. Any ideas?

^ #2 is waaay more epic.

Anyways, my sister and I pounded through the DLC in an evening. Wasn't overly impressed with the story and the dialogue/writing wasn't really up to par with the rest of the game IMO. The puzzles were a lot of fun, however. They were a lot more timing-based than the ones that shipped with the game. I'd give it a B.

I've seen a preowned Portal 2 for £20 in Game, but I'm wondering if I should get the original Portal first, just so I understand what's going on. Trouble is, I've only seen Portal as part of The Orange Box with the other four games, none of which I want.

No, you DO want the other games. If you haven't played through the HL2 series, the Orange Box is a must get. All of the HL2 games are far better than Portal 1.
