It should be fixed now. If there are any bots on the Bot Exchange in the wrong section, please list them here so I can move them.

Contests / BOTM Nov 2014
« on: October 01, 2014, 12:05:25 AM »
Alright, we're bringing this back.

Since its been awhile, I'll just quickly go over how this works. Every participant creates a bot that follows the given bot restrictions for that month. They then create a simple splash for their bot and uploaded it to GTM's BOTM Uploader before the deadline expires. After the deadline expires, a poll will be created for the community to vote on their favorite entry. At the end of the month, the splash with the most votes will be put on GTM's homepage for a month.

Bot Restrictions:
  • Ironforge v1.0
  • Ironforge Standard
  • Ironforge MW (up to 200kg)
  • No cheatbot2, hidden, or custom components
  • No BFE, AAM, HAX mode, Zero glitch, etc.

Splash Rules
  • Entries must be uploaded using the BOTM Uploader
  • One bot per splash
  • One splash per member
  • Please do not put anything in that identifies you as the creator. Credit will be given after the poll to reduce bias and give people a chance to guess who made what.
  • There must be at least one image of the insides in the splash
  • The weight must be given in the splash
  • Images must be either JPG, PNG, or GIF.
  • Images must be no wider than 700px and no taller than 800px
  • Entries must be in by October 27, 2014 at 11:59 PM Central Standard Time (GMT - 5:00) so that we can spent the rest of the month voting.

Questions/comments?

General Support / Re: how do I hide components?

Please provide more details. Are you able to upload the bot and the component.txt so that we can just show you. This really shouldn't be that difficult.

If you don't want the component to show up in the bot lab, you should stick the Component.txt file inside of the Components folder and add the "hidden = 1" (not listed) line after you've attached it to the bot in the bot lab. Setting hidden equal to 2 means that it is a cheatbot2 component.

Modifications / Re: Robot Wars RA2 - OFFICIAL MOD

Breaking the claw into multiple pieces is a stroke of genius! RA2 struggles with collision meshes that wrap around so breaking it into multiple components should make it feel much more realistic.

Great idea, Naryar! I'd be very interested in hearing what everyone is struggling with.

You can have whatever you want as a profile image as long as it doesn't go against any pertinent rules listed under the rules tab (basically the site rules, profile rules, and main forum rules). As far as size goes, it should be smaller than 150x150 pixels (the forum software is *suppose* to prevent everything else). You may use image rotators if you want but most people find them irritating unless there is an obvious theme. We don't have any restrictions or policies regarding shapes or transparency.

Does that answer your question?

The first batch is the preview image if the bot has one (visible in screenshot) and the second batch is the chassis texture (not visible in screenshot).

With the recent shutdown of GameSpy, RA2 doesn't currently have a dedicated server for listing games in multiplayer. However, using the IP address should have worked... Regardless, as KOS has eluded to, most people use gameranger or hamachi.

If there is enough interest, I might be able to get RA2 to use GTM's servers instead of GameSpy's nonexistent servers for listing active games. Assuming my preliminary tests are accurate, it shouldn't take more than a few hours to get something up and running. The drawback is that I would probably need to do a manual edit to the EXE because I'm not sure that sergepatcher would support something like this. The benefit, however, is that I could potentially show this list outside of RA2 and external software wouldn't be necessary for users to find a game.

I'm pretty sure that you can edit UI/common/statusmeters.gib to get the status meter to look like that.

Site News and Feedback / Re: (possibility) previews in the dowload section?
« on: September 06, 2014, 07:58:46 PM »
As far as adding previews to the downloads, its a nice idea but I don't have the time to go through and take pictures of all of them. If you guys want to take pictures, I can add them but if we're going to go that route than we should try to standardize the appearance/size of them.

The bot exchange will have preview images when I finally decide to finish it. Goose had preview images working on his version of the bot exchange before everything got deleted when ACAMS lost his computer. After waiting a couple years for Goose to make a replacement, ACAMS made a temporary bot exchange based on the code that Goose used for the file uploader. For the most part, this is what you are seeing today (with a few of minor enhancements of my own).

Huh... is anyone else experiencing these issues again? GTM got moved to a different server after Dreamhost determined that the old server was the culprit.

Based on what you are planning on doing, I'd recommend Sage's skinning tutorial.
