For troubleshooting purposes, it would also help to know what component you are editing, and what you are trying to do to it.

Discussion / Re: Realistic rules for DSL
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:36:38 PM »
There is kind of an official realistic ruleset for DSL, it's just never been written down explicitly.  Evidence: any DSL bot that is acceptable in one tournament is currently acceptable in others too.

JoeBlo quotes my realistic rules that I wrote for BBEANS2 a lot.  Basically I just ban intersecting components that couldn't intersect IRL.  I could easily be more specific to prevent abuse and the creation of "technically realistic but wouldn't actually work IRL" bots, but I wanted to keep things simple, so that anyone can just fire up DSL and build a bot and know right away what is allowed and what isn't without having to go look up a list of rules.

That said, I think in some cases (tournaments, etc.), an "advanced" realistic ruleset would be good to have.  Some things that could be included with such a ruleset:

-No more than 3 weapon components in parallel (so 8 spikes around the circumference of a 100cm disk = OK.  8 spikes all lined up in parallel on extenders coming off of a burst motor = Not OK.)

-Um... something limiting the length of front wedges.

Those rules would be hard to write though, because there would always be exceptions.  You could limit skirt length, but what about bots like Final Destiny?  Bots with long skirts that drag on the floor do exist in real life, they're just rare.

this is just a thread I started for you to post you're thoughts on backyard ripper
(Image removed from quote.)

I nominate this Most Random General Discussion Thread of 2009.

Thoughts on Backyard Ripper, eh?  Here goes: The angled spinner really only works well on a juggler-type design, so it needs weapons with no normals on the disc, and also some good wedges.  Dual discs would also help to keep bots from being thrown off the weapon.

And the game has never crashed after fighting it as far as I can remember (it HAS been a while though).

Nice of you to drop by and say hi.  Boy, you were already an old hand at RA2 when I first joined the old forums.

Maybe it's actually a good game, I don't know, but I always laugh inside whenever I see an ad for this game because it has what has to be the most generic RPG name ever.  I mean come on, AdventureQuest?  The two words are synonymous!  It's like making a fighting game called FightBattle, or a racing game called MarathonRace.  You couldn't come up with a more generic name if you tried.

If it was like a spoof/satire RPG, then that would be cool.  But you can't make a serious game with that name and expect people to take it seriously.  Or at least I can't.

I'm not much into MMO's though, so if there is a good game hiding behind that silly name, I won't find out.

"Mrhalitosis" is deleted now.  While this was kind of an amusing prank here, it will get less and less funny every time someone does it.  I don't want it becoming a trend.  Anyone else starts multi-accounting, there might be some temp bans issued.

I like that bot.  Looks very stable, and 100 kgs of hammer is a lot of weight to be swinging around for a MW VS.  If you enter that in Clash Cubes, I'll be doomed if I face it.

Except... the chassis is not an exact cube.  It's a little bit too tall.  Might be close enough though.

Heavily inspired by FB's Red Tide IV (the one in BBEANS4 is VI, which has only one drum. IV has two drums - the bottom drum spins up and the top one spins down), this bot is meant to be a quick killer.

Actually, both of Red Tide IV's drums spin up.  Your bot is more like my MW Allomancer.  But still very different.  Very good job making such a cool original bot in stock.  I can't think of any way you could improve it.

This business with the plane in the BBEANS arena bears looking into.  Could there be a way to defeat the "bot is only as good as its wedge" rule for DSL3?

Do the weapons on Evisceration spin up or down?

FB actually made a bot quite similar to Death Wind, but he also had problems with wedges.  The wedges SHOULD be great with the tilted-down chassis, but it's harder to do than you think...

Malevolence is cool, but the MW VS looks rather unstable.

The blades would work better if the ones on the sides were angled out, instead of inwards.  Also, you can save a bit of weight by using 45-degree baseplate anchors and mounting the blades right on those, instead of using baseplate anchors + 45-degree angle connectors.  Might let you put on another piece of armor.

I like the look of that bot though.  You sure improved it a lot in one rebuild.

If you get desperate and just can't do it, you can do a little gmf-swapping to get them off.

Make sure to save as 24-bit uncompressed (there should be an "options" button under "save as" where you can change this).

General Support / Re: Son of Wayachi Ai Help
« on: December 23, 2009, 08:44:59 PM »
That will be hard.  You need to make a custom .py with new Throttle, Turning, and navigation.  Unless it is absolutely necessary to AI this bot, I would avoid it.

Well first of all you have "targets =" in there twice.  You only need it once.

Second thing is, you might need to put "fire = False" in def __init__.  You usually need to do that with new variables.  I always use values of 1/0 for true/false though.  Maybe try replacing the True and False with 1 and 0?  I know I had problems because of that at least once.

And there better be more in def CanDriveUpsideDown than what you posted, because that will for sure cause a crash as is.
