It's mostly since MS paint isn't as technical or advanced as say Gimp, Paint.net, and especially Photoshop. So with little tools that mostly people have barely used in MS paint can make pretty ugly things.
It has nothing to do with MS paint being as technical or advanced, it's just when people hear "MS Paint bots" they auto think of sparkey's stuff

I'm not sure exactly what you would be able to teach with RA2.
Maybe basics of engineering, like designing something and then tweaking it until it works well enough for the job?
I feel like there is many more programs/other methods that are better suited to that than a 10+ year old game. On another note, IIRC I remember some people saying that they got to play RA2 in class as some sort of fun activity in a CAD class or something.

That actually looks pretty cool.
BTW, due to a coding error in RA2, all spin motors only draw 10 amps, which means you can use only 3 ants for this robot. (4-6 ants if you want the batteries to last longer)
You should check out Live Designs AI too, as it's made up of more "realistic" looking bots than the standard DSL AI.
