Makes sense, too. Battlebots' hazards didn't really decide the match like Robot Wars' did.

Unless you count the hellraisers, popup cylinders,  or if one robot holds the other over one of the pulverizers - which is just like the pit except the robot is less salvageable afterwards.

House robots were a genius idea from a commercial standpoint - they ensured recurring, merchandisable characters even if the favorite robots lost too early.  And considering that the producer sunk 95,000 GBP out of pocket before they even had confirmation that they'd be getting episodes, well you can see why they'd have money on the brain.

Robotica, ladies and gentlemen.

Seriously though, Robot Wars had a far better production value, but Battlebots robots were far and away superior machines. I preferred Battlebots, but the bullcrap "slams, jabs, rams, etc." judging criteria that Comedy Central displayed really bothered me at times.

That wasn't what they were actually being judged on, but I agree, it was stupid.  The Mortis vs Voltarc match, Mortis won on those made up categories, but Voltarc won on the actual criteria, so all they managed to do was confuse the viewing audience.

To be fair, there were only seven after S5; Kraken, Mantis, Ming 3, Tiberius, Pinser, ROCS, and Snake Bite.  And to be fair-er, Razer itself wasn't in series 7.

Robot Wars.  Let's see, Battlebots had commentators (the fact that it's a plural is bad enough) with a combined IQ of the season number, LOTS of needless filler (show of hands, who gives a **** about the Dr. Inferno Jr guy's swing dancing hobby?), blatant preferential treatment (unseeded robots could have to fight as many as four battles to reach the same stage as the seeded ones), blatant overdubbing with fake "metal smashing" sound effects, doing extended interviews pre-match with just one of the teams made it painfully obvious which one would win, Bill Nye painfully misused.

Humdrum.  Once I remembered that I could use MeltyBrain AI to make an FBS look like a shell spinner, I realized that I could make a few more RW replicas that had previously been inaccessible.  Does anyone know how to make the direction indicator always point the same way while the rest of the robot spins? (a picture example with with the insides showing would be great).

I'll upload a group photo soon, this is my 30th replica, and it may be the last time they're all together.
?
but why ?

Donating a few to them to a charity auction for autism.

Ming 3.  The claw was done freehand, and took a lot of tries to get right, but once I had it I was sure I could finish the rest. I made the holes by tracing circles around various coins.  I'll upload a group photo soon, this is my 30th replica, and it may be the last time they're all together.

That's fantastic, Sonny! I love the details on the claw and the wheels in particular.

Although, if it's alright to ask, why would it be the last time they're all together?

Of course it's alright. There's a charity auction for autism, and I've volunteered to donate some of my art pieces.  I figure that I could sell them myself for maybe 20 dollars, or raise a few hundred for charity.

I'm thinking of giving them Thermidor, Reactor, 13 Black, and Corkscrew.

I've gotten a little over 50% of them right so fa; I suspect that's below average.   But I still have a shot, all but two three of my Sweet 16 picks are still in the running.

I'm probably going to get karmically smited for saying that my city's team - Harvard - would lose its first game.

Kentucky FTW

EDIT: Just lost a Final 4 pick.  Damn.

Make ads for RA2 here.
my ad (It took 2 minutes)

The problem is, that looks like an excellent Stock bot...

It's ugly and unrealistic.  Advertising is all about about flash judgement, and mine is that I see a mishmash of haphazardly-glued together components and a heckuva lot of grey and black.

They knew plenty about real-life building, they were trying to imitate Battlebots (it's no coincidence that almost all of the Stock AI resemble a famous Battlebots competitor) And let's face it, people are going to have more fun when the Stock AI are easy to beat.

SU's still got this! (I'm from Syracuse)

When I do brackets, I usually go by which mascot would win in a fight.

That's going to be my strategy from now on.

Panic Attack is a good first one.  It's both easy and hard at the same time, and can be done pretty decently with just Stock parts.  Plus it's a good primer for skinning.

Chatterbox / NCAA/March Madness
« on: March 14, 2012, 11:25:39 PM »

I realize we have a large non-american population here, so for the courtesy of them, let me explain.  In the USA, people get all riled up over the NCAA  (nat'l college athletic association) basketball tournament in March.  For these 4 bizarre weeks, this college basketball tournament gets more buzz than the professional league - there's no rational thought process that would cause this to happen so we call it March Madness.   The 64 best-performing colleges all get in and are seeded 1-16.  There's a lot of betting on the results.  The winner is usually some backwater college like Duke or Florida State.
Did anyone else fill out a bracket?  A restaurant nearby my workplace is offering free lunches to the person with the most accurate predictions, so I took it upon myself to write down the high seed's name for 95% of the games and randomly add some upsets mathematically use statistical analysis to predict the optimized outcome.

I'm 1 and 1 so far - I haven't checked tonight's results.   I may have made a tiny error in picking Syracuse to make the Final 4 - they lost their key player a few days beforehand.

Thanks guys!

Sonny was born on Pi Day? :O

Happy birthday. We must make a replica of a birthday cake for him!

Well done.

Happy birthday. We must make a replica of a birthday cake for him!
That was the best line I've heard this week

Anyway, happy birthday to Sonny. I have no idea what to draw for you
I've drawn him an awesome manly unicorn kitten. ^^

For real?  I'd love to see it.

My grandma sent me this card.   I gave her one of my cardboard Diotoir replicas for her birthday in October.  Being artistic runs in the family:

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I took it down, most of the bots with skinned components were made without actually duplicating the components, because I was lazy (this was before I knew how to duplicate without extracting the GMF).  People couldn't figure out how to swap the skins and I was tired of explaining it, so I took it down.

@Ricky, here are the names of the three Robot Wars books.  They're not that useful now that we've got the Robot Wars Wiki and all of the UK series on Youtube, but if you're a collector, here's their names and descriptions.

Robot Wars: The Official Guide - All the Series 4 bots, that's the one used in the scans you posted.

Robot Wars Extreme: The Official Guide - All the bots from Extreme 1 events (excluding newcomers to Extreme)  Some of the lineups are wrong due to robots pulling out/joining at the last minute.

Robot Wars: The Ultimate Guide - A prelude to Series 6, contains a selection of notable robots from Series 1-5.  Tons of factual errors.

I'm afraid not, it's too much trouble to retrofit all the components, plus people want both the AI and human control versions.  I haven't ruled out the possibility completely, but I estimate it'll take about 24 or more nonstop hours of work, and I'd jsut rather do other projects right now.  Sorry.
