Stock Showcases / Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:27:43 AM »
Ramplates on wedges are rarely worth the weight investment in sub-HW Stock bots (although there are exceptions), and you should always, always, ALWAYS have a chassis wedge when building Stock wedges. One good hit from a spinner on a ramplate, even if it doesn't hit your chassis, and your bot will be entirely useless. Remember that Stock ramplates only have 1000 hp, so they don't offer great defense.

But Sage is still right, it is very nicely put together. Excellent space management, although the overall design isn't particularly great.

Discussion / Re: System32 Discusses AI and improving it.
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:18:13 AM »
While I agree in principle that smarter AI would tend to emulate "realistic" combat robotics more accurately, this is pretty much a self-evident truth. At this point, it's pretty obvious that human driving is better than AI driving because humans have the ability to adjust tactics and strategies on the fly as they see fit. In itself, AI isn't realistic al all because no real combat robot relys entirely on AI when fighting. So, in order to emulate a real-life situation, you are correct to say that AI would have to emulate a human pilot as closely as possible.

But, as any scientist studying AI will tell you, this is far easier said than done. To my knowledge, the only place where human-level AI exists is in the mythos of a science-fiction universe. How then can you realistically suggest that we develop our extremely rudimentary AI system to fictional levels? It simply can't be done.

Also, I don't see how that first video you provided shows an example of "risk management" AI at all. The HS simply recoils after every hit, leaving itself open, and the drum can't immediately attack because the forces created by its weapon destabilize it if it turns too fast. Other than that, both bots are either entirely on the attack ("rammers with spinny things attached") or allowing their weaponry to spin up (as TrueOmniRam.py allows).

I also disagree with you regarding bigger arenas limiting the effectiveness of box-rushing and the benefits of self-preservation, but I'm losing coherency (very tired) so I'll save those discussions for later.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Overrated bands/singers
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:40:31 AM »
Metallica. And Slayer. Most thrash metal too. I don't really think "overrated" can be directly applied to "popular" music (like Bieber, Lady Gaga, etc.), but what really gets me is when guys like Hammett and Mustaine are christened among the "greatest" guitarests of all time. Dunno why, but this really bothers me, especially since I don't think their music is that good.

*Waits for someone to say "Mastodon" in response* - although I'd be kinda inclined to agree at this point. While I still love their earlier stuff, and even Crack the Skye, their newest album wasn't really that great.

Typo in the splash, My bot is Hammer OF the North, not Hammer from the North.

Usually, if you remove all of the wheels and then reattach them it will solve your problem. Although, if you have to rotate any to fit them on, this is what is probably causing your problem. In this case, you'll have to spread out your wheels a bit so they all fit without any rotating.

Told you you'd win. The only reason why your bot wasn't my initial pick to win was because you'd be knocked out if you faced Sage or someone similar early, because even with the ramplates, the front is still flimsy against HS.

Good job though. There was no way you weren't going to win that final.

Oh my god, the AI for every bot was brutal xD

At least it was a level playing field.

Discussion / Re: New Trinity?
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:25:27 PM »
Basically, that's just the same principal as axle loading. Once an axle gets up to a high enough speed, it will leave it's mount. You can see the effect on the wheels of many SnS, especially ones that do use the trinity glitch to spin faster than normal.

Someone made a flipper like this not too long ago, but I don't remember who. Thanks to them for the inspiration though :3

Exploder is awesome, but where do you get the Judge motor? I can't seem to find how I go about displaying it in the botlab.

So I got this Steam business and D/L'ed TF2 because what the heck it's free. I'm probably the worst every class in the history of ever :P

Oh, and I can't add any friends for some reason.
You can only add friend if you have paid for something on steam. E.g I have Portal 2

Well damn. I already have a whole bunch of games on Xbox, and I don't really want to pay for them again. Any recommendations?

I've done a lot of testing in that arena, and I'm more worried about it being too fast and wedgey and driving itself into the pit. I don't think it's ever got stuck on the ramps...

I was just as bad at TF2 on Xbox, so I was kinda expecting it. I tend to be awful at every FPS not called "Halo."

Oh, and just curious, it's between 5 and 2 AM, depending on where you are on the continent. What are you doing on GTM's? xD

DP!

Since Ounce is a jerkface, I had to go and make a SHW if I wanted to get any spot in B4ttlebots. Didn't really have time to entirely design a new bot, so I just upscaled Onslaught. Should be fun to watch though, as its only possible strategy is "GO FAST SMASH STUFF AARGH." Presenting Rampage:
