Oh cool it's my arena. I'll try to do an irl

Man all your skins look nice.

Stock isn't that bad though, you just have to learn all the tricks and glitches to efficient building. Although it seems like you prefer to make nice looking IRL bots, which Ironforge and DSL are better for. Keep up what you're doing

Maybe instead of a ballast you could put a ram plate in the chassis gap. It should weigh down the same spot.

This looks pretty awesome imo.

The backstories are probably to get more content since there won't be as many robots as before, and I'm ok with that. It sounds interesting. But then it will get more publicity, meaning more new robots, and then more fights could happen, and weight classes could be added back in later.

Not having weight classes at first is fine with me anyways, because superheavyweight stuff is the coolest. To someone who has no idea what robot combat is, 340 pound machines destroying each other sounds way more exciting than 60 pound machines fighting.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but you guys could at least be a little excited, especially on this forum. I think its great seeing how it's starting from almost nothing.

  I love it

Did you change the direction the bot faces forward in the bot lab? If you didn't, try taking out

'nose':math.pi,

Even if the motor in the chassis doesn't help, it still looks awesome

It's only $10 and if you don't want to use debit cards or whatever you can get a steam gift card. But if you're broke just try a torrent

Hey if you don't mind, I have an idea for an arena you could do.

It's inspired by an arena someone on FRA was using for a vaporbot tourney, and it's basically a circular arena with a pillar in the center. This pillar has two buttons on it, and once they're pressed the arena spins at some sort of high velocity and tries to spin people off into the OOTA zone. IDK if it would work with RA2's physics but if you're looking for an idea then there you go.
That's possible. Would it have short walls or just be a tabletop arena?

very creative set up! you going to make more of these?
Thanks! I'm going to make more if I can get any good ideas.
I've started this,
(Image removed from quote.)
but I don't know if it's worth finishing. The 4 edges are slightly higher than the center, with a slight slope connecting the. I might just make it flat. This is just an improvised thing (without walls yet) so it might not even get done.

I actually really like it, dude! Keep working on this arena; we need more simple, but effective arena ideas.
Ok. Should I make the floor flat or leave it as it is? I can't decide.

I like it. Is that a piston at the back?

It's very nice but it still would be only useful in multiplayer, because AI's will just fail to consider the arena.
I've tried a few matches and it can they can make it through, but if you think it would be better I could make the collision lines the ai uses for path finding. It would be rough though. Either they would always think the arena was at the smallest state possible, or I could add a collision line whenever a wall moves, but it wouldn't move back.

Hey mate, I like what you've done here a lot! Would you like to join our team to finish and release the Official Robot Wars RA2 Mod? :)

As said before it will be on the Official Robot Wars Website and we might be making a pay per play setup at live events. You will be credited of course with the rest of the team.

Wow, thanks! I would love to help, but keep in mind you would have to wait a while for me to make anything. Using text editing to make things from scratch like this takes a fairly long time. Anyways, if you want, I'll join.

plus, when you export your own skin 'stead of a template, you can't fill the lines because it looks wonky and just
1. export template
2. import that template
3. apply decals
4. export current paintjob

it was supposed to be really good at some point but then i accidentally forgot to resize the skin from 1024 back to 256 so the game wonked out and i got mad and i personally painted the polka dots which took forever and i just gave up

You don't need to resize skin back to 256, when you make a 1024x1024 skin you are supposed to leave it 1024x1024 so it leaves a clean crisp image  :dumb)

i did that but then when i tried to apply decals (Slot for the flipper), it doesn't show. so, idk.

Put the decal on the skin first, then export and edit it. You can paint your own slot over it.

This is a good idea.

Sometimes the robots temporarily get stuck in the walls, is this supposed to happen
Yeah it isn't supposed to happen, but I couldn't figure out how to make the walls just push the robots slowly, even with mass in the millions. They get stuck because they can't turn, as they're pressing against a wall.

And thanks everyone!

I made this topic for my custom stuff that doesn't fit in a custom component showcase.

Here's my first arena completely from scratch! The compactor arena:

I was thinking about making an arena that was kind of like a trash compactor, with huge moving walls and stuff (like in movies), so after spending more time than I should have, I made this. All 8 walls cycle though different patterns to change the shape and size about every 30 seconds. Sometimes though, the walls cant push things very well.

The patterns and timing can be customized in the .py file. With  hazards off, it's just a big octagon.

There's also another .py file for a different mode:

Whenever a robot gets too close to the edge, all the walls quickly push towards the center, causing damage and sending things flying. Bots usually keep bouncing off walls until they are destroyed, so it's more for fun and not good for a "real" battle.

If anyone can skin it better, show me! I think it only looks ok-ish as it is.

Here's the dowload (.zip)
