DSL TC Showcases / Re: DSC's IRL DSL showcase
« on: March 07, 2018, 10:00:21 AM »

Robogames 2 entries:

AW - W I D E P H I D - Flat rammer, works inverted. The original did surprisingly well, hopefully the new version can prove to be more successful.
BW - Angry Mantid - Just W I D E P H I D with a big bar spinner.
LW - Sunflower - Originally started out as Nano Carbonize.
MW - Sir Lance-a-frog 2018 - Finally making it's RG debut. Rebuilt from the ground up to be more compact, without sacrificing the weapon or lance. Paintjob is is inspired by the real-life SLAF bot, and fights with the power of ZHUUUUUUUUUUUUGE.
CW - inVasion - Returning champion. Changed teeth so it has 4 large typhoon teeth instead of 8 small Typhoon teeth to eliminate 'weapon spam' criticism. Internals reorganised with the new AP point mods and alrger wheels for movement when inverted. However it can still self-right.
HW - CarboniZe 2018 - Not quite as big as the SHW bot that forfeited it's place last season, but tweaked substantially. Actual weapon is 4 small typhoons and not the two large ones shown here. Hopefully the AI will help rectify the self-righting issue that plagues this line of bots.
SHW - The Very Hangry Caterpillar - A dual-HS shuffle bot weighing approx. 1796kg. Absolutely no idea how this will perform, it'll be something to watch at the very least.

Undressed, it has 3 pairs of high-power servos, withhex plate hubs and 'legs'. This has probably been used before but I can't recall, and probably not in a SHW designated to fight in a tourney. The legs are spaced out and staggered to avoid clipping through one another, and provide a surprisingly smooth ride and turn. Has as much battery power as I can provide as with 6 servos and 2 6-mag motors I predict it being hungry for power.

Rejected Ideas:

Another attempt at a SHW shuffler, a big ol' flipper based on an older bot. even with a hinged front ramp it bounced around far too much to be useful, but could get under stuff with some luck. Also enjoys the taste of shell spinners.

199kg shufflebot, meant for a cluster. Won't say much about this or it's purpose, other than it's the reason why there was a rule change a few days ago. ;)

EDIT: Forgot a third entry. The poll has been reset so if you have cast your vote already, please consider all bots and re-vote. I'm sorry for the mistake.

Ironforge HW. You have 4 days to vote, and this is also the last BOTM I host, as it goes back to MNB now.

Modifications / The Future of the IRL Packs
« on: February 22, 2018, 10:23:20 AM »
This may end up being a long post, so I’ll try to keep this as to the point as I can.

For the last few months I have been privately working on my own TC pack for RA2. The tentative title for this pack is 'RA2 IRL Edition', and whilst being a TC mod, there were more far-reaching goals such as trying to use it to get a definitive IRL meta established with it. Having made the first 3 IRL packs, I wanted to set my sights a little higher.

UI splash screen test

New wide front-hinge burst, which would have been adapted for the previous two versions.

Remade Magmotors in some new to DSL configurations.

Remade Magmotors, which would have been rebranded as Ampflow motors for drive versions.

Drive versions of the Perm motors, retextured as LEM motors.

The only version of this TC that exists is some preliminary work on the UI, the botlab menus stripped of all content apart from the IRL Packs and works in progress, and a set of goals and ‘wants’ for the pack. My intention was to remake and replace the DSL content whilst adding new variations on a lot of parts, I wanted to get rid of the clutter, reorganise everything useful, make this, then that, then more of those and these, and so on. And whilst I had approached people to help me, or people had offered to help me, I was content to try and go it alone for the most part. While I still have those ideas,  a couple of large roadblocks and diversions appeared.

The most ‘serious’ of these was losing the ability to create models and import them into the game. I lost the use of 3DS Max, had no luck finding a replacement and have been unsuccessful in porting objects to and from Blender. Thus the new models part was on hold after barely getting started. The other major roadblock was the time I spent making my own real-life beetleweight bot, which took up a good portion of my time from October, up until early February this year. Aside from reducing the time I had with RA2 to basically making a BOTM each month, honestly I got far more personal satisfaction out of making and competing with the real bot than I'd ever gotten with something in RA2.

So these experiences have shifted priorities a little. It would be quite easy to just continue as I have these last months and let the limit of my RA2 work be winning BOTM each month. But I don’t feel like that would be a satisfying conclusion to my work with RA2. With the three packs already, there has been such a dramatic shift in how people create bots in RA2, a goddamn colour explosion that has allowed anyone who has played to express themselves better and in my opinion helped lead to the most creative and productive era of botbuilding in the game’s history.

Therefore, I have made these ideas public because I want to see how people feel on the future of the IRL Packs. Whilst I can’t say for certain if there will ever be an IRL TC now, I still want to work on IRL Packs if people want those. I still see so much that can be done to increase the variety and creativity of designs people make, and with people such as Geice working to improve existing parts, I want to open up the possibility of working together with more people to make more packs a reality.

The takeaway point from this are as follows:
- Do people want to see more IRL packs, or these packs implemented as a TC separate from DSL?
- Do people want to see the IRL packs offer more than recoloured items, and start to branch out to include things like new and rebranded motors/batteries/weapons?
- Are people who have the ability to mod and create new items willing to work together in creating these packs?

Yeah, everyone fights once, ranked based on that and then seeded and drawn for the tourney. May work quite well - everyone is guaranteed at least two fights, you could end up with a nice split of new/old/experienced/inexperienced bots through the tournament brackets, and you may be able to show full fights with the amount of episodes.

It probably means there's going to be a handful of matches each week, randomly picked until they have all fought. Then ranked and seeded based on how they performed and then organised into a tourney that way. UFC tend to have different weightclasses fighting and then a main event, but unless BB come out and say otherwise, I think it will just be heavyweight bots fighting for a few weeks to decide the seeding.

Which seems like a good way of having more competitive fights and giving bots more airtime.

Glad to see you had fun. Any upgrades planned? or just repairs?

Updates are planned, because I'm going to be remaking a lot of parts, as the hits from X-301 pushed bolts/nuts into the HDPE to the point where a lot of it will not sit straight. So whilst I need to remake parts I may as well tackle a few redesigns - using titanium for the lifter instead of the 3mm mild steel I had. A shallower lifter and maybe more 'useful' travel on the lifter itself would be nice too, the servo I have was beefy enough but I couldn't get under or lift as high as I wanted to. Some more robust hinges and motor mounts, better back panels not held on by meccano brackets.  :dumb)

So lots of ideas, but it was a great experience.

The photo doesn't do it justice, there's a lot of damage :dumb)

A tired, beaten, bruised Sir Lance-a-frog as he currently is after the UWE Beetle Brawl. Won my heat with 2-0 (3 bots per heat) beating Eric the Destructor (vertical spinner) and The O'Neill (4WD pusher), but then lost in the Round of 16 to K2 (Eggbeater), and finally the loser's melee, which involved Lilith (front-hinged lifter), Danger Zone (lifter) and the monsterous X-301 (drum spinner). X-301 is the main cause of the damage, which includes a knackered wheelguard, broken gearbox and many gouges and missing chunks.

However, I could not be more pleased with how it performed, I feel my lack of driving skill was my downfall in the two loses, as I drove into the pit in the K2 fight, and I think the gearbox failure assisted my drive into the pit in the loser's melee. Aside from that, SLAF gave me no grief or issues.

Shoutout to Craig/Cephalopod, who finished an amazing 4th with Mr Cat's Mouse House! And for the assistance and patience he's had in guiding me through building SLAF. I cannot wait for the next event.

Loving the improvements that you've made for your bot. That 3mm steel plate should come in handy, and hopefully the plate should do its job pretty well against spinners.
The only spinner I have in my Heat is a bot called Eric the Destructor. Vert spinner with an aluminium disc. Whilst that would still make a mess of HDPE (which is 90% of my bot), it will blunt pretty easily on steel, so the plate is necessary. Think i've got a rammer and another lifter so a lighter plate would be better as it's not required to soak damage.

Maybe DSC doesn't mind this, after all, he shared his creations on the BW discord long before the BoTMs he won.
Not denying that I have done this, seems an odd time to bring it up seeing as I have no way of removing these posts other than telling them to shut it, which is rather rude. Shame on me for being asleep when people are posting in this thread I guess eh Gulden?

New addition is the 3mm mild steel lifter/tank plate. Will be facing at least 1 vert spinner at UWE so hopefully I can tank the spinner and slow it down, whilst shoving it around. Next task are to give the plate an edge, and work on a lighter, wedgier version for less/non-damaging bots.

Contests / BOTM MARCH 2018

... So, with MNB away and me running the BOTM vote for February, I guess DSC is running the asylum for March's BOTM. Guess what the topic is...

... thats right. IRONFORGE HW. So predictable. But srsly, lots of people were building in IF for the first time as part of GTMCS 2, so here's another reason to have a go.

Usual rules apply. Same size, weight and name visible, submit bots to me and MNB will probably be back to running BOTM next month.

One trip to B&Q later... there's just enough space inside for the wiring, and still working on important parts before more decorating happens.
