Vote for your top three.
For the HW UK champs last year you all got it completely wrong. Let's see if you can do better this time :P

Roaming Robots are now in collaboration with Robot Wars LLC and are now officially Robot Wars! The next few events will see some rebranding, including the old logo etc. The first Robot Wars battle in over 9 years: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=plcp&v=3BcybSn0G6g

The UK champs is going to be done in two weeks time by Robots Live at Queensferry. Sign ups so far are posted in the poll above.
So, who do you think is gonna win?

Since when did Vertigo become ACAMS?
Oh please, if it was ACAMS you'd end up limited or something, all I do is stop that from happening. And looking over Mike's post I completely agree. The best thing to do would be to not buy it and end up with him wasting $150.

A combat robot just isn't the kind of thing you go and flip.
Really? :P That is an annoying thing to do though. The best thing for people to do would be to not put an offer in and force him to have spent $150 on something he doesn't know what to do with.

I've just gone through every single thread in the real robotics section and moved all threads to where they should be. The reason for this is that I looked through this section briefly yesterday and I reckon about a third of threads are in the wrong place. Anyone with mod powers can look at the log and can see that a lot of moving has taken place :P
So I think this makes it a bit more obvious as to where a thread belongs. If not there's a guide here:
- Member's Robots: Threads about the actual builds of your robots, event reports etc. Not a section for threads regarding as to how to build them or how to get started.
- General Discussion: Discussion about everything in robotics not related to building robots or parts.
- Building Tips and Discussion: Threads about how to build a robot, what to build and how to get started.
- Robot Parts: Discussion and reviews about robot parts, suppliers and kits.
If your thread has been moved (which applies to a lot of threads in the member's robots section) it shouldn't be hard to find. There are less than 200 threads in this section so recent threads are likely to remain on the front page of their section, and you can use the guide above to locate it. If you still can't find it let me know and I'll locate it for you.
There are still bound to be some threads in the wrong place, again if you find one let me know and I'll have a look. Most importantly I moved a load from the member's robots section to building tips and discussion as there wasn't any build in them. If a build had started in one of these (not just a gathering of parts) again let me know and I'll move it back.
Happy? All feedback welcome as I can still do as much moving about as I want =)

From a first impression, the kit's chassis looks far too weak. I'd make your own chassis from better materials. Most of the parts look suitable though, though I really would reccommend upgrading to lipos.

I'm trying to use Fingertechs in order to avoid using modified servos. Neither Robot Marketplace nor my LHS had anything smaller in stock.
And that would be your problem. Fingertechs are too heavy to be suited to (our) ants. They should be fine if you want to build an American ant though.

lightest robot i have made was 48g, 9g servos and a single lipo cell.
but yeah, using gearmotors and a 20g servo will get you to about 110-120g
I don't think it's even that heavy. The gear motors are 10g each, so I'm sure motors, servo, speed controller, receiver, lipos and wheels should come to around 80g/90g if sensible parts were used.

150g is more fun :P 75g is more more fun 50g is super fun!
If you can somehow build a robot for those classes it is...
I am confused as how you have got to that weight. As long as you've used the standard gear motors and a sensibly sized servo, everything should come to at least under 100g.

What parts have you got?

Build your robot well and whack the spinner as hard as you can. Unless the robot uses magnets it usually sends them out of control.
Does carbon fiber sound good to you?
Only if it's very thick, and spinners will just slice through it anyway. You're much better off with atleast a titanium front panel if you're looking at taking on spinners.

There is always one, two, or three trolls of those coloured usernames. In one newcomer welcome thread, Vertigo (yes I'm talking about that Vertigo who builds robot in real life) relentlessly annoyed the newcomer and was spamming himself talking in Spainish, but that was not the language the newcomer spoke.
I'm sorry but you seem to have all your facts wrong here. First of all, the newcomer was Spanish, and I believe that I said a couple of lines in Spanish welcoming him to the forum. It was then other members that started spamming excessively. I fail to see how at all how I was acting as a troll or annoying him. Even so, I fail to see how people were relentlessly annoying the newcomer. Don't get me wrong here. This was atleast a year ago and so I'm not getting into an argument about this because I doubt that anyone remembers it that well. The whole nature of the rep system means that some invalid applauding/smiting will be given. I know that when I was more active I did give a few excessive smites, and so has everyone else at some point. However, looking over the last page of rep changes, I only really agree with five, at a push. It does seem to have gotten much worse. I do think this has become a bigger issue than it needs to be. I think making everyone aware of this will prevent most of it, and unfair reps either way can be easily neutralised by somebody else. Again, if one member does do so too frequently, a smite should make them aware/stop.

Please don't use servos for drive, you'll be literally driven around in circles by faster bots. A pair of tiny escs from finger tech only weigh 4.5 grams each, and a pair of gold sparks(also from finger tech) weigh 28 grams each. That adds to about 65 grams. If that's too heavy for you, this gear motor would work fine: http://www.robotcombat.com/products/0-GM11A.html
The fingertech motors are far from ideal for a UK ant. They are too big and too heavy to be practical to use, and would force either extra gearing for 4WD or staggered wheels. They are also only available from the US. Ordering components from outside Europe is not preferable when you're only building an ant, especially since he doesn't want to compete with it competitively.
Anyway, I agree with haz on regards with the weapon servo, either that or the HPXF for an ant (I personally prefer the HPXF, but both work well). It you do want to use servo drive, which is wise if you don't want to use it competitively, I would recommend the SG90 servos from GiantCod (http://www.giantshark.co.uk/towerpro-sg90-micro-servo-p-268.html). I have not used them, but according to all accounts, they are easy to speed hack and, though can wear out, are not expensive to replace.
Thanks for the great info, yet again. And what luck! I already have one, I was going to use it for my weapon servo.
It's really not powerful or 'well made' enough to take the straight of being a weapon servo. The HPXF or HS-82MG that Haz mentioned would be much more suited to that role.

The version of Matilda in that one competition doesn't count - it's a replica.
Well, the shell used was one actually made pre-series one for Matilda. A few shell were made so that it could be quickly repaired if broken etc.
I believe the one on Matilda now was owned by one of the roboteers (possibly Alan Gribble), but the rest of the robot is not the same.
Right, so that'd explain the smaller tusks and things. Too bad they're not pneumatic, either.
They're still pneumatic to my knowledge
