Okay, Overhaul is capable of self-righting. The late hit did prevent that. What difference would it make if they were back on their wheels after the match had ended? Would the late hit suddenly be less wrong because overhaul would be able to return the favor? I don't understand that logic.
It made it look like Overhaul couldn't self right and would have lost if the match lasted longer, which I feel like had a big boost for Lockjaw in the judges decision as Overhaul had pretty much controlled the fight up until that point.
That's partially it, the other side of it is that just because a robot doesn't look like it can do damage doesn't mean that it won't do damage. In this case, no obvious damage was done. The right thing to do was say "hey, my bad, sorry" and it looks like that's exactly what happened, after the initial in-arena conversation. You spend $5-10k and hundreds of hours on a bot and see if you're not a bit pissed at first when someone takes a free shot on it after the bell.

Do you still have DoS? You should bring some bits of it for display!
well the disk is ****ed but i really should have kept it, but I still have a lot of the frame and baseplate, the rest was gutted for money :)
"The plan" which I've just concocted would probably be building two heavily armored frames that we could strap different weapons into, so we could swap parts and such. I think a greenspan style rotary flail could be effective, since honestly it doesn't give a sh** how much energy its holding, if @400rpm it can dent whatever material its hitting, its going to make a lot of noise and sparks. If building hinges into your spinning disk is "building for maximium destructive power under the rpm limit" i'll be damned :)
We'll see, I'm in a weird place since I basically know all there is to know about the /mechanics/ of exactly how I want to build exactly what I want to build, I just have no idea anymore about the motors, speed controllers, radios, ect. anymore. And what the hell is with brushless motors, what kind of crack child doesn't list their motors by actual energy output? how the hell are you supposed to know anything? lol
As a NERC officer, I'd call a 400rpm Greenspan style rotary flail totally legit for the Sportsman class. As far as motors/gearboxes, the e0designs.com DeWut is very good. I'm also a fan of the Magnum775 from Robot Power, and a lot of people like the various banebots options. ESC wise I use the Ragebridge (v2 coming soon) in my 30's wherever possible. There's also BotBitz esc's and the Holmes Hobbies BR-XL that have been used with a lot of success. On radio gear, I use a Spectrum DX6i and one of the OrangeRX variants. (R410X and R615x)

Two things, late hits aren't cool independent of whether or not they do damage. When the fight's over, it's over.
Yeah, it's a bit rude to give the bot an extra ram, but that still doesn't warrant the team to start smashing the battlebox out of anger. It's not like the extra ram is going to end team overhaul's lives as they know it forever.
Also, Overhaul is capable of self righting and the late hit prevented that.
It looked like Overhaul was put into a position where it couldn't self-right, at least not for the last 6-7 seconds of the match.
On your first point, they were likely trying to get Dons attention since the match was, you know, over. There's also the whole "lots of teams pound on the glass in celebration" bit. It's 1.25" thick lexan. It's not fragile. On the self righting, it looked to be just about there when Lock-Jaw hit it, and if it couldn't, why not leave 'em there?

lol why do you hate overhaul so much
Builders got way too upset over a "late hit" that did virtually no damage and most likely wasn't even taken into account by the judges, and then were salty that they lost the JD after they got flipped over with no way to self-right (if they did have a way to self-right, they certainly didn't show it off very well).
Two things, late hits aren't cool independent of whether or not they do damage. When the fight's over, it's over. Also, Overhaul is capable of self righting and the late hit prevented that. It's a safe bet Don realized they were going to right themselves and charged in not realizing the fight was over already.

You mean Bot Blast?
Aw man this year's gonna be amazing
Yeah thats the one I'm thinking of something DOS-ish, a greenspan style spinner for the 30lb sportsmans, we'll just make two frames so I'll make something for the 30lb big boys club
Here's the relevant rule if you go sportsman with a spinny thing- Limitations on spinning weapons All devices rotating more than 360 degrees must not exceed 400 rpm. Weapon rpm will be measured by tachometer prior to the start of the event. To remain within the spirit of this class, you should not attempt to create the most destructive spinning weapon possible under the rpm limit. Specific weapons of sufficiently high mass or moment of inertia (MOI) may be limited to lower rpm or disallowed by officials if they deem the weapon to be too destructive. Officials may require submission of specifications including motor, voltage, gearing ratio, weapon weight and dimensions prior to the event. However, specific weapons of very low mass or very low moment of inertia (MOI) may be allowed at a higher rpm. The intent of said weapons should NOT be to deliver large kinetic hits. But rather cutting, drilling, scraping, ect. All weapons operating above the 400 rpm limit MUST be submitted to the NERC board for approval during registration. If you have any questions about the legality of a weapon you can read or post on the NERC Delphi Forumn here: http://forums.delphiforums.com/CJRC/messages?msg=2422.1or email NERC: robotconflict@gmail.com

So, I have a general construction question. I understand most of the parts of assembling various kinds of weapons (except for pneumatics/hydraulics) but one thing that eludes me is how you put hubs and wheels and stuff onto driveshafts. I would imagine a press-fit would easily come apart, which makes set screws an obvious choice. But not every motor has a "D" head.
That leads me into my next question, how are the actual blades getting mounted on their weapon shafts? $50 follow-up, how are free-spinning axles built?
The "lower" tech the solution is, the better. I'd like to actually build a lightweight if the sport makes a comeback, but I'm not really keen on spending tons of cash on motors and batteries and all that. I take the Team K.I.S.S. approach to things and just pick parts from junk/scrap. That said, are Power Wheels batteries allowed? They are SLA's. (I'm terrified of batteries and working with electrical components, so having a robot that charges by literally plugging it into the wall is nice.)
edit: Let me clarify "low tech". The other day I was trying to take a motor and its belt/pulley assembly off of a clothes dryer that was being thrown out. (I stopped because I ended up slicing a finger open on part of the metal frame.) Being realistic here, what's the feasibility that the pulley assembly would have been of any use to me in making a spinner? I would assume the motor is a bust because it needs 110V or something, it was the pulleys I wanted.
Give this a read- http://www.instructables.com/id/Nyx-30lb-Fighting-Robot-Re-Made/It doesn't answer everything, but it covers a lot of the stuff you were asking about and covers a range of techniques.

On an unrelated note my sisters kid saw battlebots and heard from them that I used to do that, now he's all in frenzy mode so I'll be dragging him out to bot bash in a few weeks. Depending on commitment from him I might be making bots again at some point in the near future.
It would be cool to see a mini-DoS show up at Moto this year.
I'm not seeing that on builders db? It seems like east coast events are limited to like 6 pounders where i'd rather play around the 12-30 pound limit where i'm not doing crap like drilling holes in zipties to make weight, and the number of 1-6 pounders that are just a motor with a ridicilous weapon is a little scary when you can't fit enough armor in that weight limit to protect your expensive stuff I'm also at a pretty large disadvantage it seems since tech (like cheap speed controllers and batteries now, wat?) seems to have advanced quite a bit but there's no delphi forums hoedown to really troll for newer information and I dont really know a ton anymore.
I /do/ still have my 60lber in the basement but those SLA's are looking ripe, lol.
Registration isn't up on BuildersDB for Moto yet, here's the most recent Moto- http://www.buildersdb.com/view_bots.asp?eventid=395NERC's also putting on an event in Philadelphia in the fall- http://www.buildersdb.com/eventdetail.asp?eventid=410Mountains of event video at: https://www.youtube.com/user/mikencr/playlistsAs far as communities go, there's http://sparc.tools/forum/index.php and https://www.facebook.com/groups/RobotCombat/

Watched the fight and tried to take the perspective of a judge. This event used the SPARC criteria.
Points are awarded in 3 categories: Aggression - 5 points Control - 6 points Damage - 6 points
Damage is easy, 3-3 split Aggression was likely 3-2 for Short Stop Control may be what got you. Don't recall if it was a split decision or not, but for control and making a snap judgement I'd say it's either 3-3 or 4-2 for Affluenza, making the final score either 9-8 Short Stop, or 9-8 for Affluenza depending on who's doing the scoring.
The reason I'd say Affluenza could get the control points is there were a few spots where it managed to get around Short Stop and push it across the box/into the wall. Most of the other contact was head to head and resulted in both robots stopping where they were until they separated. Watching live, those full pushes tend to stand out to judges and that's likely why it got scored the way it did.
That said, the new Short Stop was a huge improvement over the last one and I look forward to seeing things continue to progress.

There have been complaints about Hworf blades all the way back to this time last year with BB9.
Moros was built for BB7 with the hope that it'd be absurd enough to get them banned.

Team itself put it up on my reddit thing
Given that the account was created today and that's their only post the legitimacy is highly suspect.

That lightweight is literally the worst thing I have ever seen Badnik. 3 hworf blades on a lightweight? You should be ashamed.
At least it was enough to finally get them banned.
