gmax is a stripped-down version of 3dsmax which was created for creating game mods, but it is very closely tied to certain game developers, and only exporting to these game formats work. gmax doesn't save any other kind of files other than .gmax and specific game formats, so that it can't be used for other games.
The only way to create a GMF file for RA2 (yes, there are other file types that use this extension) is either using 3dsmax or notepad to edit the ASCII file. The only ways of exporting from 3dsmax are:
-The official Gabriel Entertainment .dlu plugin (which is a plugin, which gmax doesn't support for obvious reasons, and furthermore the .dlu is ONLY compatible with 3dsmax v. 4.x and 5.x, since later version of the software have the plugin format changed a bit)
-An unofficial maxscript (3dsmax script, which gmax doesn't support either), either dummee's original that supports 3dsmax 4.x and 5.x, or my modification which supports all versions of 3dsmax (again, NOT gmax) + a gmf compiler (dummee's or mine) to change it into a format usable by RA2.
Please lock and make this an announcement.

If team logos behave like textures, they need to be square and the width and height must be a exponent of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, etc.).

err wasnt this game announced like a year and a half ago? what have we heard from effe or the other main designers(i forget who does what)? i personally think effe has left us with anxiousness for a game that is never actually going to come The "other designers" was me. We abondoned the project because of lack of time and programmers (doing it with a two people team is pure suicide). I may pick it up after I finish working on everything I started (which actually may turn out to be parts of OpenRA, that means the unfinished gmf editor, planned advanced bot editor etc.). We're sorry for letting you down. On a brighter side, I may be back (with a working mobo) after the new year or so.

Update.
Well, I went through a crapload of computers these days. First, I managed to stitch together a couple of components into a semi-usable computer, Celeron 500Mhz and 128 RAM, made it run Windows 2k (Linux for some reason didn't like it), but one day the mobo seemed to fry (again?), and I switched over to a 10-year laptop. Unfortunately, this afternoon my GF stepped over it (silly me leaving it on the floor next to bed), and the screen cracked. I then went inspecting further the broken computer I stitched together before, apparently only some parts of the mobo fried, net is broken (fortunately I have one of those wifi usb cards), audio is broken, only one memory slot works and floppy works bad (strange sounds, probably some pins are disconnected, I'll deactivate it in the bios later), it runs very hot, but it boots Windows just fine. Well, I'll stay on Frankencomputer for a while, even if it crashes every two hours or so. I'll try to install some development tools (I used to run VC++ on a '98 computer when I was a kid) tomorrow and see if I can get to work on anything.
My main mobo still lies in it's box, waiting to be serviced (however I seem to have lost the warranty, which is bad). Let's hope It'll get fixed or replaced soon.
Anyway, until next time. Serge.

So I've had the chance to use this thing several times now, and I have a couple comments.
-One sort-of-error I found. The tool doesn't take the position of objects in the RBCollection into account, it just sets everything at 0,0,0. So if you look at a motor, the axle usually won't be in the right place, and arenas look like a hopeless mess.
-It would be nice to have a shortcut to reload the gmf you are currently viewing, so you can quickly see the changes you make.
-It would be nice if you could display the skins, though I'm not sure if that's doable.
But no major complaints, it's a very nice tool overall.
Edit: crap, just read about your motherboard. I guess none of this is doable then, at least not for a good while. Oh yes, this doesn;t actually read & interpret the TM's. It was going to be fixed with the GMF editor that was supposed to come out. The shortcut is very doable, but still, I don't have my HDD handy. Map reading would be somewhat more complicated, since it's quite a complex process to do (I started initial work on this, but again, no file access at this moment).

Unfortunately, the retirement is real, and the rickroll was just a joke. Oh, and kill, great you've found it - I knew someone would.
Anyway, I'm on the bus right now, I'll post more when I get back home.

Hello gametechmodders, Unfortunately, I decided to retire from the RA2 scene, at least for now. Due to a recent motherboard failure, I cannot access my SATA disk (I do not have any other motherboard that supports it), so in fact everything I was working on (it was meant to be a christmas gift for you guys, I had an almost completed 3d gmf editor) is inaccessible. I cannot afford myself a new motherboard, so I'm stuck on a '98 computer barely running Windows 2k, not even RA2. Also, due to recent personal problems, I wouldn't be able to keep the development speed I had earlier. If you want to inherit my projects, go on, drop me an email, and I'll make you an admin on the googlecode page do that you can commit source code to the SVN. I'm sorry if I gave you up and let you down, I really thought I'd never gonna run around and desert you, but this time I'm going to say goodbye. So, until I can afford myself new hardware, farewell, and I hope to see more revolutionary stuff from you. Sergiusz Bazański http://www.q3k.org/

The ASCII GMF file format is quite self-explanatory - the variable names are in English. The lines to be changed are in the material list - change the bmp file name.
I'll get back to work on the compiler this weekend. Sorry for the interruption.

The compiler does work . Anyway, the troubl with the box arena is that it is not easy to lower it's walls - the main collision part is just a cube with it's normals ("active" sides - in 3d modelling a 3d face can be seen from only one side) turned inside-out. So to lower the walls, you'll have to remove the main collision cube, and cretae 5 planes - 1 for the bottom and 4 for the sides.

you can also put this code in your AI , in the function 'activate', after the 'if active ...'
fout = open("C:/tmp/mybotsId.txt", 'a') # change the file name if you want goon = 1 i = 0 while goon == 1: if i > self.GetNumComponents(): break currentType = self.GetComponentType(i) fout.write("identifier " + str(i) + " : " + currentType + "\n" ) i = i+ 1 if fout: fout.close()
(be aware of the indentation problem). Here, code tags: fout = open("C:/tmp/mybotsId.txt", 'a') # change the file name if you want goon = 1 i = 0 while goon == 1: if i > self.GetNumComponents(): break currentType = self.GetComponentType(i) fout.write("identifier " + str(i) + " : " + currentType + "\n" ) i = i+ 1 if fout: fout.close()
