Modifications / Re: music
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:56:43 PM »
It's easy.
Code: [Select]
self.custom_sound = plus.CreateSound("blabla.mp3", False, (0, 0, 0))This goes when other stuff for the arena is loading, since it takes some time to precache the sound. self.custom_sound now holds a "handle" to the sound you want to play later.

Then, when you want the music to play, just run
Code: [Select]
plus.loopSound(self.custom_sound)

I'm pretty sure you can't play mp3's with Python code.  You need to convert them to wav's, which are huge, which is why you don't see very much in-battle music.

Night wheel?

N12.  The "N" stands for "Night" apparently.

Nice to see another fancy-shmancy bot exchange in the works... IMO the coolest feature about Goose's old bot exchange was the bot preview pictures that popped up on mouseover.  If you can remake that I'll be happy; any other features are just icing on the cake.

I know something you can do in the meantime Click.

You never did your "5 Bots to Watch" and "5 Dark Horses" for this tournament. ;)

You're right, I thought about it but I was in a rush to get the splash up before I left and didn't have time.

It's a bit easier to make predictions now that I've done two rounds of fights, but here goes.

My top 5 picks for possible winners (in no particular order):
Death of Angels 2
S Cargo
Infection 4
Terrible Sight
AntonYYYm

Possible dark horses to watch out for:
AntonYYYm
Deinonychus
Claw Cube 3 (okay I'm cheating a bit here... I wouldn't have picked it at the start of the tournament, but that's a dark horse for you.)
AntonYYYm (naming it twice because I'm expecting it to do really well)
1.8 (I would've picked All Or Nothing at the start of the tournament, but based on current brackets I expect 1.8 to go further.  And 1.8 is almost but not quite as good as AON.)

Also: Wooooo the videos are getting past 50% now!  Still not fully uploading, but it's progress...

For those who are confused about Flee Beetle: the name says it all.  It just runs and hides and lets the other bots duke it out, and in the event that another bot attacks it, it's built to withstand a lot of punishment.  JoeBlo got it right: the goal is to survive as long as possible before I have to use my other bots, and hopefully by that time at least one team will be eliminated or weakened.

Also, the humor in the match videos is good, and the False Advertising bye team = win.  You should give them misleading preview pictures to complete the deception.

-Looks at splash for first time-
-Sees Bisector-
-reminded of bot I was gonna enter-
-rage-

 :(

What bot was that?  Something similar to Bisector?

Too bad you didn't get in... I guess that makes 3 veterans now who missed out.

Anyway, I'm TRYING to upload the second half of the loser's bracket round 1, but the computer isn't cooperating.  It gets to about 50% and then quits  ::2mad   Yesterday and today it's done that.  With any luck they will be up soon... but I don't know how soon.

It just doesn't steer very well.  Which is somewhat expected with 6WD NPC fasts with hypno wheels.  And it usually goes a little off course on the initial box-rush.

I've tried various turn and turnspeed values, AimError values (part of my new Rammer AI), and a custom py that waits for the bot to settle on the ground before applying any throttle commands (meant to make it do a perfectly straight box-rush).  The AI just can't handle such a fast bot very effectively.

A dodecahedron is a terrible way to die.

Someone's been reading the DSL cheatbot2 part descriptions.  But it's a tetrahedron, not a dodecahedron.

Also, fact: the legs of spiders are most likely analogous to the mouthparts of other arthropods, not the legs.  So it could be said that spiders are legless and walk on their mouthparts.  Somehow that makes them waaay creepier when you think about that.

This is actually the same bot as the Kheper in Clash Cubes, I just redid the armor.  It now has more front armor, more rear armor, more chassis armor (Face Gasher won't have such an easy time anymore), and no wedges (no great loss).  Also has a bit more counterweight on the servo arm with a bit of extra weight I had.

This is also my MW for yoda's Survival of the Fittest tourney.  Because Kheper is good at surviving.  As long as it doesn't get flipped out.

Originally I made a totally new bot and chassis and stuff, with Ti sheets instead of discs and a Vlad flipper in the back, but for some reason the servo was too weak to lift the weapon arm, even though it was EXACTLY THE SAME as the original version.  I eventually gave up trying to fix it and just used the original chassis and setup.  No idea why this setup has a more powerful servo...

Amazing what just a couple of Lightning spikes can do.  Imagine Hydra with a normal flat top... it looks just like a basic face spinner.  But with the spikes on top... it magically becomes a totally awesome artbot.  And it still looks effective too!

There's gotta be a way to make it invertible with such big wheels though.

Maybe not popups... but other gut-rippers ??

Not very common in stock MW.  And every bot I've seen showcased for this tourney is a HS.  If I do encounter one though... well you know how effective rammers are in that situation.

That's it, I'm making a hammer bot for Metal Mayhem.

I'll just count on one of the HS's to take you out before we fight.

Point: don't make a bot just to counter one threat... wait I should probably take my own advice.  Oh well.

One more piece of advice: I would angle the plows the other way so there's a wide opening in the front.  As it is now, they could block the weapon.  With the plows the other way they would help feed bots toward the center.

And it's also a good start to a bot.  Good weapons and drive, good space management.

All right it's been long enough.  Here's my final bot for Metal Mayhem.

It's designed to beat HS's, specifically of the SnS variety.  SnS's have an annoying tendency to knock bots to the side and hit the wheels or the back--well, that won't work with Thwartoise.  It's armored on all sides.  And the best part is, I don't need to worry about popups in this tourney.  Just VS's and flippers.

Also, it uses a custom AI that attacks with either the front or the back, depending on which side has more weapons.

I'm guessing the problem here is that the mace has no TVERTS and TFACES.  It's like the round extenders and the DSL bars and similar components... you can only make it a solid color using MATERIAL_AMBIENT, MATERIAL_DIFFUSE, and MATERIAL_SPECULAR.

The solution would be to map out TVERTS and TFACES on a .bmp... but that would be really hard with the mace, since it's so irregularly shaped and has so many little faces.

Hell yeah I broke the arena!

And not just once... twice!  (Look in the background at the end of round 3.  One of the flippers is stuck up.)

Anyway, I think my bot qualifies as a decent catfish remake, don't ya think?

Really needs to be invertible though...

1) Rust In More Pieces (a bit like Robot Wars Extreme, no real winner just a pile of different events using bots from the first 2 RIP, includes Grudge Matches, Tag Team, Winner's Tournament, Rumbles etc)

Would I be able to update my bots?  I have a Megawhirl VI that just needs to be skinned and AI'd.

1856
if that is soo, i think there will be a lot of bots with heavy hammers attached to whatever the builder wants.

And/or popups.

But this is an interesting idea.  It would be even more interesting in stock though.

Site News and Feedback / Re: Rules of Banning
« on: June 26, 2010, 02:39:04 PM »
How many warnings is it?

I think I got, like two back when I was the forum n00b.........

3

So let me get this straight.  3 warnings = ban?

Does this happen automatically?  (Can't find where the settings are in the admin panel).

And is this a temp ban or a permaban?  Or perhaps that is up to the banner, based on the seriousness of the offense (I would lean toward that).

Loser's bracket round 1, part 1/2 is up!  And brackets are updated.

And there seems to be some confusion over The Mini Warrior vs. AHH COME ON!!!.  For the record, a Havok forfeit only forfeits that one round of the fight, not the entire match.  It's just like any other type of win--if you get 1 win by Havok forfeit but your opponent gets 2 TKO's, you still lose.  So The Mini Warrior is moving on, not AHH COME ON!!!

But Havok forfeits don't count on the BBEANS rankings.  I don't keep track of those.  Reasons: it would be a lot of work going back and recording all of them from previous BBEANS, all the previous BBEANS have used different Havok restart rules, and wins by Havok forfeit don't really give any indication of how good your bot is.  It's more like your opponent losing than you actually winning.

Yes.

Because of some havok, that said... but wait. Is that the skirt hinge that havoks or the BSG ?

If you go through frame by frame, you can see that the hammer gets caught between the iron spikes and gets sort of twisted out of place.  When the BSG tries to snap back into place, it flings the bots everywhere.  I'm betting this only happens against AHH COME ON!!!

What is Draw Distance?

It is the maximum distance at which the game will display (or draw) stuff.  Anything beyond the draw distance from the camera isn't displayed, with the effect that there's this wall of black fog in the distance.

So with a bigger draw distance you could, say, see from the start to the finish line in the Drag Strip arena, or see all the way to the bottom of the Keznorg IGC.

The reason for having a draw distance at all is to reduce lag, but you could easily bump it up to a lot more than it is now with little to no effect on gameplay.

lol I made a team for this... got it all AI'd... thought I was being pretty clever... but for some reason, I had it in my head that this was in the Combat Arena.

Oh well, there's plenty of spots and I already went to all the work making the bots, no reason not to enter.  We'll see how I do in an arena with low walls.  If anything, I'll be an easy win for somebody someone.

Maybe I'll change some of my bots if I can come up with a LW or MW that's better in this arena (I think my HW is still good, at least).

Although I do really want to see how the LW does... it uses a very unconventional (and possibly controversial) strategy.  ;)

Edit: Hey cool, I just thought of some bots I can use that are much better in this arena AND don't ruin my team's theme.  Expect an update...
