Would different build styles have their own tournaments?
You mean like metas?
i'd be down for maintaining a rankings system like superbomb suggested. i've got experience with that sort of thing
Same here. I study sports statistics and analytics so this is my cup of tea (except I hate tea).
If we go down this route then having someone/some people keep track of this would be wonderful!

« on: September 17, 2019, 12:23:42 PM »
I am liking the sounds of a points system depending on where builders placed in a tournament! Thank you Hop/Nightraven for your suggestions, think this could make it a lot better.

CHANGES LISTED IN BOLD.

The RA2 2020 TOURNAMENT SEASON (name WIP)
- To try and encourage people to host/take part in tournaments, this Season would be a topic of some sort showing a list/calender of official tournaments.
- Hosts would have to sign their tournament up to be added to the official list/calender. New/unreliable hosts would probably have to commit to finishing a tournament first before having tournaments accepted.
- Builders will get points depending on where they finish in these tournaments. Around the Top 16 or so compete to be the champion of their respective metas. (with a custom award for added "ooooooh" factor!)
- I'm also thinking of adding BOTM and Challenge Belt into this somehow. BOTM is a lot easier of an idea (The 11/12 BOTM winners would be voted on, robot with the most votes wins Bot Of The Year). Challenge Belt could be top 8 or so builders that held the belt for the longest? Still unsure for this.

Thanks for the help so far, all criticism/ideas are still welcome as this is a big idea!

this is a sh** idea
Sorry to hear that, if you could give me some reasons why you think that and what you think would improve it then I'd appreciate it.
I like the idea, but I'd prefer if the top builders in each division went through into the end tourney instead of just the tournament winning bots, so we'd have builders that are incredibly consistently good, but never won a tournament.

Also would help the issue of having like 2 stock bots at the end of the year
Feel this is important to be discussed, could be a decent change if people agree. Perhaps builders who never win a tournament but come 2nd/3rd a lot could be added to the end of year tourney.

Hope to hear more feedback from everyone. It's a bit barebones atm but it's an idea we can work on together, regardless of if it goes ahead or not in the end!

Off-Topic Discussion / IDEA: RA2 2020 Tournament Season
« on: September 17, 2019, 05:24:06 AM »
Okay so this idea is the most experimental and if it went live wouldn't start until 2020. I was inspired by how the Roblox robot events were run and I did briefly talk with Sevalent about this a while ago.

- Every tournament winner heads to the "End of Year Celebration" to battle it out in a fun tournament where we crown the best of the best but also celebrate a year of tournaments/GTM/RA2 etc etc. These winners will of course be seperated by their meta and weightclass.
- I'm also thinking of adding BOTM and Challenge Belt into this somehow. BOTM is a lot easier of an idea (The 11/12 BOTM winners would be voted on, robot with the most votes wins Bot Of The Year) but Challenge Belt will require some thinking.

I am more than happy to discuss this with all of you as it's a very experimental idea that would require a lot of elbow grease but could be a lot of fun. I'm hoping with this, we can get more Stock/IF tournaments and have more variety in weightclass/arena etc as I feel we've been missing that for a long time. Of course for this to work, it would require EVERYONE to work together.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions and ideas.

Cheers!

Lots of responses, thanks again everyone! I'm gonna try and summarise your points....

BOTM:
- Sometimes BOTM could have a themed month (Makes the event more varied which I think would be cool)
- People seem to prefer FOTEPX's idea for BOTM (I would like to give this a test run with a checkbox or notification from the person to say "Hey, I updated my showcase and want this robot to be sent for BOTM please!" Might require some testing but think this would be a good direction to go in.)

Challenge Belt:

- Challenge Belt could use a dedicated host (Absolutely think this is vital.)
- Have the title defended once a week (Yup, I think I can agree with this too.)
- Parsec Challenge Belts for the metas (I am down for this, think this could be a great idea!)
- Have Challenge Belt title holders on the front page somewhere (I feel this is important, BOTM winnners get to be on the front page. I'll talk with 09 and see if we can get some restructuring going...that being said I can't remember who any of the title holders are. We don't want to overload the front page though, while Poke's idea is cool...not sure how we'd organise it.)

As an additional idea: I'm thinking of designing Challenge Belt/BOTM themed awards to the people that win these events. Might be another good way to go "Oh, they're holding the belt? Gonna have to challenge for that soon."

This has been very helpful, thanks for all the ideas so far! I've got a good idea what direction to go in but I'm still up for listening to more ideas if you may have them!

« on: September 15, 2019, 02:56:43 PM »
Thanks everyone for the feedback so far! Really appreciate it!

BOTM:

So far, it seems people are okay with the format but I do feel recently that we haven't had many entries. Kix did mention this month we apparently have more which is good but perhaps we need something to encourage people to enter.
-FOTEPX's idea does seem good, perhaps we could do that with either the most liked robot from each showcase each month being entered into BOTM? (Perhaps a tad too gimmicky?)
-Perhaps a monthly award for the GTM users that win BOTM?

Challenge Belt:
Yeah, there is a "queue" for the belt atm but it gets forgotten about.
- As an idea, I think a bracket for each meta could be done in the first 2 weeks or so of the month to determine a contender, with the match against the current holder being held seperately.
- Challenge Belt award for the current holder?

These are just my ideas, please discuss this more! I feel this has been fairly productive so far!

Thanks!

Off-Topic Discussion / BOTM and Challenge Belt Feedback
« on: September 15, 2019, 12:21:52 PM »
Hello all,
short and sweet: I want to know your thoughts on Bot Of The Month and Challenge Belt as they currently stand. Do you like the current formats they have? Do you think they need to be reverted back to older ways/different ideas?  What would make these events better or worse in your eyes?

This might seem like a small issue to start with but I figured I may as well lend you all my ears while I work on the bigger issues.

Cheers!

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: On GTM's Reputation with Other Communities
« on: September 15, 2019, 08:01:08 AM »
On the point of getting people to post on GTM more, I think we should look at the unique stuff GTM can do, such as BOTM or challenges belts. Both these monthly events have been in a pretty bad/nonexistent state for a decent while, however with some rethinking I think they could be a good draw for people to use the site and the forums. In specific, BOTM is a bit of a mess right now as it's basically a free for all. Going back to either the old system of enforcing a theme, or FOTEPX's system of having your bots entered through posting in a showcase (which would also help the lack of bots being showcased) would benefit it I think. We don't need multiple categories, there's not enough content and DSL IRL is the only thing people play anymore

RE: The challenge belt, honestly I think it's fine to just restart as a monthly DSL-IRL mini tournament with changing arenas and weightclasses. We just need a dedicated host, and maybe admin support to give a forum award to the current holder couldn't hurt either.
I can agree with this, I think the idea for BOTM was there but fell a tad flat. I'll definitely keep this all in mind Badger so thanks!

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: On GTM's Reputation with Other Communities
« on: September 15, 2019, 07:32:08 AM »
Right, hello! I really appreciate this insight so thanks for your efforts.

- The community being seen in a negative/positive light is interesting. I know there are those who view GTM as "toxic" and those who are fine with it. I have been in touch with Yugitom as a GTM/GWars representative as well as Mystrsyko to try and bridge stuff in those areas. More work will be going into this alongside other communities and people.
- I would love to hear people's ideas on how to improve GTM's look! Please get in touch.
- Looking at ideas to try and encourage people to post here more. Been talking with Hop on this topic. We need GTM as it is where the downloads and the history is.
- Tournaments: ah yes, I brought this up before in the "Ra2 is sucky" topic. We need more tournaments, especially smaller ones. I do have a big idea to try and encourage people to host but it'll take a lot of planning.
- The fracturing of the userbase is an interesting one. Sure a lot of the active GTM users use OW/PWS but these servers were never ment to replace GTM.

Again, thank you for this: as mentioned, I do have ideas for improvements but don't want to rush them out. I'm also here to listen to anything you guys want to contribute, can't promise it'll be implemented but I'll damn well listen. Drop me a DM or whatever.

Cheers!

« on: September 01, 2019, 09:36:43 AM »
OW - Now that is currently the best RA2 server, the talking variety is there, but i do have some gripes
1. Where is the goddamn option to change my nickname
2. Mods - GM's do nothing that im aware of, maybe a secret judging channel or something, but Main moderators consist of: Toxic Hop, Sev, and Somene i dont have much respect about as i dont really know him. He became a mod as soon as he joined
Aye, the GMs help out with decisions and episode matchcards! Hop and BSRaven were given promotions in wake of this post/Mine and Hop's talks (Hop for GTM representation, Rabe for OW representation, Sev for PWS/neutral representation and me overlooking it all) and I hope we can bash our heads together and start making good changes not just for OW but for RA2 overall.

Yes my previous attitude/bending knee/pov wasn't the best but as I've addressed in my previous comment, I'm hoping these changes alongside personal changes for myself and the future help as well. I'm here to try and help make things better and I know some people may doubt that but I'm hoping to prove it. I appreciate the feedback a lot Kix and thanks for your words yesterday. :heart_smiley:

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: TL:DR Ra2 is sucky

Right then...so first of all, Hop discussed bits of this with me about bits last night so I'm happy to see his thoughts in full. Time for a big essay but for the record, TLDR: I mostly agree with everything Hop has said.

Tournaments
Right, I do feel this is mainly my fault. "It's not a evil intent thing" as Hop said to me last night. You wanna try and make things fairer and more equal but you end up causing more issues (like Thanatos Redeemer which is still a ****ing massive derp on my part). While I have seen tournaments using elements of the OW rulesets and that is an honour(?), the beauty of GTM/RA2 tournaments is that every tournament should be different or FEEL different. Back when I joined GTM, I think Annihilation Nation had just ended, Banter Wars was ongoing and there was a lot more variety. Different arenas, different rulesets, different weightclasses. I feel we're heavily lacking that today. In terms of OW: while I'm working on OW4 atm, I am going to be heavily tinkering on the ruleset for the future so it isn't as limiting.

Modding
I 100% agree with Hop here. Heck if I trusted anyone to "fix" or "patch" RA2 then it would be Geice as he has imo the most sense out of any of us. However, that is his choice and no-one elses.

Discords
Might come as a shock to a lot but I agree wholeheartedly again. I do feel there is a stigma against GTM/RA2 in general. In recent terms, I've been seeing people coming to the GTM homepage, seeing topics like the "seagulls" topic and going "Yeah, this is GTM alright". After heavy self-reflection, I don't feel my introduction to GTM was the best. My showcase was recieved well which was great and encouraged me to keep building but the Discords are where things started to get a bit rough. When I was looking after the AHOL discord, I was being told "Don't invite them, they're from GTM etc etc" I think that started an unhealthy mindset that has persisted all this time, not proud of that. I do feel we need to mend the relationships we have with other communities but only if they're game to do so. I know RA2 doesn't have the best standing with ARC/Garry's Wars from what I've seen/heard so we can only try and improve if they want to do the same.

As for OW, yeah I agree. I do think that the people who don't listen to feedback or complain about making changes that then say "Why are they being mean to me, they're so toxic, do something" need to toughen up a bit while I do feel that the other side of the coin generally mean well but can come across very harsh at times then it does appear a bit borderline. Yup, the comment about my trust is true and after some heavy thinking, I'm gonna be reshuffling the Discord roles and taking some chances.

Basically, if you want to improve, you'll listen. If you don't and go up in arms about making changes or "THAT'LL TAKE FOREVERRRRRR" then you'll keep having issues.

Zoomers
I guess I accidentally talked about this in the previous part but yeah, can see where Hop is coming from. You can also be in both teams at the same time as some people have showed! :P

Garfie
Erm...you whut?

if someone like orc, sev, or killer wants to run the community then i have 0 issues
I'm sorry but no. I haven't done a good job of running OW (something that I'm trying to improve as I've hopefully shown I want to do via this wall) and believe the community would be better run by someone else.

Again, I'll repeat at the end:
TLDR: I mostly agree with everything Hop has said.

Hoping we can make the future of RA2, however long it lasts, a brighter one.

P.S: Hoppin is still a twit but he loves OW and that's all that matters :heart_smiley:

Toaster chose not to enter it. In fact, IIRC, he hasn't entered OW4 at all.
He's planning on entering the World Championship, he has ideas but isn't sure what to go for yet.

In other news, the qualifying video(s?) will go up next week!
