Other Tutorials / About 3ds max & RA2 (the modder's basic knowledge)
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:04:12 AM »
Holy crap, I thought it was well known already.

YOU CAN MOD RA2 WITH ANY (>4.2) VERSION OF 3DSMAX. INCLUDING THE NEWEST VERSIONS.

Yes, that's right. There are two methods for using 3ds max to mod RA2:
  • The OFFICIAL version uses Gabriel's GMF Exporter, it's VERY EASY, it does not require messing around with ASCII GMF files, but it works only for version 4-5. It is very, very easy to use (and very well integrated with 3dsm), but not only do you need to find both a version of max between 4.2 and 5.1, but also the Havok Exporter (not Reactor that comes with 5.0 and up). Even more annoying is the fact that those version are BROKEN on anything newer than Windows XP SP1. There are currently no tutorials available, but anyone familiar with Havok can use it (after reading tips on the RA2 exporter page).
  • The UNOFFICIAL version uses dummee's MaxScript exporter. It's HARD to use, and requires some knowledge around ASCII GMF Files, but it works on ANY VERSION OF 3DSMAX. What the script does is allow you to export manually the "building blocks" of components, like display and collision meshes, attachment points, lights and it's up to you to stich them together into an ASCII GMF File and then compile them using a compiler, either dummee's (or a version by FireBeetle that fixes advanced materias) or mine. The procedure is explained on my wiki tutorial.
If I see anybody sayign that you need an old version of 3dsmax to mod, I'm gonna invent a way to rip out their balls via the internet.

But probably that's just because I'm dumb enough to have laughed whenever we said "bitches" after whatever ominous statement the "characters" had to say.

"Bitch" was more appropriate, since it was mostly the vampire saying bullsh** to that girl, provided they weren't just staring.

Not yet, since Nary hasn't posted his GMF file.

Actually, both of the meshes are circular. The display mesh is 22-sided, and the collision mesh is 8-sided.

Yes, keep on circlejerking. That's so mature.

A : "iPad is FAIL!!111 <funny images>" lack of arguments
B1: "yea lol trudat" people agree because they don't have a slightest clue
B2: "yea lol i agree lol"
B3: "dat is tru rofl ipad fails lol"

C : "yeye the iPad may be crappy atm but it has potential lol" reasonable arguments
B1: "yea lol trudat" ????

A : "haha ipad suck lololo FAIL OMG" ignoring previous arguments, repeating previous statements
B1: "yea lol trudat" people agree because they don't have a slightest clue and they don't care about any other logic than the one that lets them to go "FAIL" and "OMG APPLE IS TEH SUXXORZ"
B2: "yea lol i agree lol"
B3: "dat is tru rofl ipad fails lol"

It's all 30 GOTO 10 when you think about it. There is no discussion, only kids covering their ears yelling "LALALALALLA I DON'T HEAR YOU LALALALALALA". Or like a mob just wanting to vent out their anger on random people. Or like a bunch of mindless sheep following another person / idea.

How hard is it to sort music manually? It may take some time for a big collection, but it's really worth it.

Your music wouldn't be a mess if you didn't download it from crap sources / rip CD's without getting labels from CDDB or FreeDB. Don't expect that the computer will "do" everything for you - maintaining a clean music collection takes some time and patience.

I recently watched the first film with a buddy, mainly for the lulz and to see if we can endure it.
We barely could. It was worse than we ever expected (and we didn't expect anything good at all).

Why the heck do people watch this stuff? It was 60% awkward stares and the POWER OF MOTION BLUR HECK YEAH. The acting was absolutely awful. Camera work mainly consisted of shaking and retarded angles. The editing was bad, and I mean it, BAAD. It was so badly cut that some scenes were WAY longer than they should be. The biology classroom scene? Why the heck would you make it so long?

Also, the story? Seriously? I know, it's a movie based off a book, but it made absolutely no sense. The dialog was retarded, with gems like "But I am already dieing!". Teen drama. Also, way to punish the only good character int he movie, the dad. It was the only person I felt bas about when that bitch treated him like this.

I just can't say anything more about this crap. Most of the time my jaw was near the floor, I never expected somebody can even ACCEPT this sort of "movie".

Anyone here seen it? Opinions? We will probably be watching New Moon tomorrow (ogawd), I'll share my thoughts.

As for the iPad, I see a lot of potential with this thing, but do not yet see it as something I would buy. Some things that would change my mind include: Built in iSight, the iLife Suite, multiple processes, competitive apps in the app store (MS Word, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc).

What I wanna see is a jailbroken iPhoneOS on that, it would allow multitasking (like it already does on iPhones and iPods).
Ideally, we would see Mac OS X instead of iPhoneOS, but that's not going to happen, since porting Finder and the most common Mac Apps to another processor architecture (ARM instead of the usual PPC / x86) is a lot of work. I can't blame them for doing what they did. They get a lot of control over the devices, but it's a real shame for advanced users, let's not lie to ourselves - most people just want to use the web browser.

Comparing processor speeds is stupid. An x86 is a really crappy processor for mobile devices. It has a lot of boilerplate needed for compability with older (real mode) software, is a power hog, and it's mostly not fully used on most computers. More complex arithmetical operations only arrived in SMD extensions (starting with 3dnow! and MMX, then came SSE1 up to SSE4), which are mostly used in advanced apllications (graphics, video editing) and not in everyday use.
How well a device works depends on how good the programmers are. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF3-U9Lb12k&feature=player_embedded# . See what you can do with an 8-bit microcontroller running at a 12 Mhz connected to a cheap touchscreen and 4 KILObytes of RAM.
ARMs are great CPUs for mobile devices. They offer various opcode modes for maximum cramming of code, they are light on battery AND on heat. An ARM running at 1Ghz is a MASSIVE, GARGANTUOUS  TON of power.

I think Apple should stick to Ipods and itunes... There stuff looks good and seems super hi-tech but in reality the only thing special is that they over price all there stuff.I really don't like mac products because of all those reasons. And a big question I've aways had was why didn't Apple put in all those customizable features that you get from jail breaking your Ipod in the actual Ipod.

Macbooks are on of the best laptops available on the market right now. They will last you forever.
Don't be a fanboy.
