GHW's = Coolest. Bots. Ever.

143

I will say my final piece on this issue and leave this discussion for others (I've not been a member long enough to have the right to say any of this but what the heck):

My Suggestions (suggestions not demands):

1. Forum structure:

Forum Information: Same

Robot Arena 2:
General Discussion: Modifications, Modification Ideas, Challenge Board, BOTM
New Member Area (GTM Academy) Tutorials - all versions/mods, links to tools and utilities - new user friendly/orientated. Organised for skill progression.
Stock Sub-forum:
Showcases - for stock, starcore, custom etc.
Tournaments:
General Discussion, rules etc.
Tournament threads - Display tournaments etc.

DSL Sub-Forum:
Showcases:

General Discussion - rules etc.
Tournament threads - Display tournaments,  etc.

Real Robotics - same

Software and Computers:
Game Development
Other Games

Hidden/Group membership: 'Junkyard'

2. BOTM completely open, no limits - submit what you like. Get everybody interested and building something at least once a month.
3. Rule that showcases should be designated/tagged in title by their owner: Art, Efficiency, IRL, Fun/crazy, Beginner etc. one of or multiple of? Everyone knows where everybody stands.
4. All new members get a showcase set up for them, with a link to tutorials section and beetlebros - no pressure, its just there if they want to look at them.
'Beginner' until a set number of posts or judgement by Nar or Acams or someone that they display advanced ability. Beginners get constructive advice only, not with attitude or ego boosting.
5. A 'continuing committee' of the most advanced/senior/long-time members: Acams, Naryar, Click etc. to keep everything running in the same direction and to keep the knowledge/spirit of GTM going.

Overall just a tighter organisation, more new user oriented/friendly, refocus on robot combat as a game and a sport that we are all crazy about.

(Congratulations to anyone who read this rant all the way through).

I wish I had discovered robot arena back in the 2000's when this place was buzzing with creativity and expertise. I would have been the right age as well to really get into everything and get properly good. I think I am too old for this forum now so my point of view and what I come here for is different to most. I still think if you want this place to grow again it needs to be 100% robot arena focused on the face, for people who are seriously into the game and build regularly. All the other stuff should be out of sight in 'special interest groups'. I'd go further and say there are 3 types of people here: 1.serious builders who are just interested in robot combat as a sport and the ra2 game. 2. People from point 1 who have done it all and mostly lost interest in robot building but still come here for whatever reason and mostly lost the passion. 3. People who want to mess about or don't have a clue. I'd say this place is mostly frequented by 2. Not their fault, but I don't see many people of category 1 here very often. In short I think the buzz went a few years ago (say 08-09) and we don't seem to be getting it back. Seeing how this is the last RA2 forum out there: It's fight or die time. Action is required!

I don't see how this has made the forum better. Putting the Junkyard out in the open just clutters it up if you're just interested in the robot side of things. It's going to be annoying filtering the irrelevant stuff in the unread posts. Seems like its just moving things from one place to another, not really changing much. This forum needs to be robot oriented and have all the other stuff in groups like before. People find this place when they get into Robot Arena and are interested in robots. Could put people off if they see a load of irrelevant sub-forums and childish posts like this crap. I can't be bothered with that stuff and I bet a few others might be feeling the same way.

Its NPC's with two Taz mechanisms on top. It's supposed to be a heavyweight. Its currently overweight because I rescued it from my old DSL which had altered components (for decoration) that my new one doesn't have.

This is a robot I made a few months ago which I've managed to get hold of again. It's overweight because I had to change components in the .bot file to get it working on my new DSL. I'd like advice on how I can make the weaponry more efficient/durable within the confines of the general design as it looks meaner than it actually is. All comments welcome.

Let me know if you need any robots, as I think my style is compatible to your specifications. I'd be happy to do something.
If you want to send a team, that's great.

I don't mean a team, as I don't have any MW's or LW's made. I meant if you find yourself short of bots I may be able to send individual bots. If you see any robot of mine you like, let me know and you can use it.

General Support / Re: Windows 7 64-bit problem
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:15:30 PM »
If you can you might want to see about changing how much ram you have in your machine. You will almost never need anything more than 8 GB.  Also if I remember correctly older programs for some reason like ram grouped in 2 4 8 16 etc. You'd be surprised how picky some things can be when it comes to ram. I think the safest bet is to take it to your local store (don't violate your warranty!!), get them to take you down to 2 gigs, and back up to 4 then 8 and see if that works. Testing the game each time. You can always keep the other 4 gigs as spares and you will probably need them.

Another option is to do what I have done: An older machine for older games. I have this PC plus a windows vista 32 bit laptop which runs my 16-bit games. Maybe you could do something similar.

I think the overall problem is your machine is too advanced for the game. Nothing actually wrong with it.

I have found that some older games don't like DDR3 ram, or large amounts of ram in general. I'm suspecting your 12 gigs might have something to do with it.
I've noticed that too, is there anyway around that?
None that I know of personally. Civ 4 and UT2004 are the main culprits but they still work after giving me an initial warning. But I think you should proceed assuming this is your main problem. I don't think its the gpu because Nvidia tend to be quite good for legacy. And I'm not even sure if RA2 uses the graphics card on high end machines. My gpu is noisy as heck and I would know if it was being used by the game. You could Google it and see.

I have 7 64-bit ultimate and I never have these problems either so its probably either gpu, ram or your current RA2 pack. Maybe you could try the XP virtual machine if your desktop's windows version is compatible. Unbelievably I managed to get a few very old games to work on it.
I've tried Virtual Machine before, it didn't work for me, besides, that would be a lot of hassle, opening up Virtual PC, booting up an OS within an OS, just to play a game.

Bear in mind that more and more old games are going to become difficult to get working in the near future. Its not just going to be RA2. I'd seriously consider the virtual machine. Microsoft have improved it since I last used it, the version I have now is more stable. I think this will be the way alot of older games get played in the future so we might as well get the hang of it now.

Disclaimer: I've never had problems with RA2 (other than the usual crashes) so I cannot be 100% I'm helping here.

Are you trying a fresh RA2 or one copied from your old machine? Maybe you could try a completely new install (i.e. download a new one) and swap files over until you find the problem causer. I have found that some older games don't like DDR3 ram, or large amounts of ram in general. I'm suspecting your 12 gigs might have something to do with it.

Glad to see its such a popular idea. I've got plenty more bright ideas where that came from but I think I'll keep them to myself. I shall stick to what I know best: Robot building.

Why do builders have their own page? I've not looked through the wiki much but I think I will work through it. Looks good.

I love that. You should maybe skin the chassis with the flipper steel texture to make it look better. I like these flipper bots.

See this is the sort of thing that having a robot fighting association or similar avoids. Its like a chess club, you don't play on the top boards before you reach a certain standard and everyone who joins knows that. It's not elitist, its just meritocratic. I probably wouldn't even get in cos of all the stuff I don't know how to do yet, but at least I would know there was a high standard to go for out there and it would be worth it (off topic but I think these are linked problems).

Sylandro you need to learn to build to a good standard before the other guys on here will take anything you do seriously. In the eyes of many here you have no credibility hosting tournaments or making mods if you don't know how to build good robots first or know how to AI and other such things. Its good that you are enthusiastic and want to be active but there are things you need to know how to do, and show that you can do before you should be doing stuff like this. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you or anyone else what to do or how to do it, I'm just letting you know most of the guys on here won't take you seriously unless you show a certain level of robot building knowledge/ability. I think you could be a great member in time but you have to go through the learning process like anyone before you can do this stuff.
