Yes, I actually agree that hiding under the blade should be banned in future tournaments.  It's one of those things that's only good the first time, like a joke or a mystery novel.

I actually didn't know that there was no collision on the center post until I tried driving into it (actually I did know from my early flat DSL bot Dead End, which some old veterans may have remembered, but I forgot).  I was originally planning just to hide next to the post which would have been completely realistic.  The lack of collision there just sweetens the deal.

It's not an unbeatable strategy though.  Slow bots won't get flung OOTA as easily, so something like Redstone Compass or Crocodile or LOL could outweapon Seek, then wait out Hide and either destroy it when it comes out and attacks, or win by points.  Hence why I said I was worried about Redstone Compass.

Looks like I've got 1002 Problems next though... this is precisely the kind of bot that will have trouble with Hide.

(Congrats to GRW for winning his first fight though.  1002 Problems is tougher than it looks.)

Edit: *actually looks at brackets*  Oh, I guess I get Yoda... that's going to be considerably more difficult.  I must hope that Tiamat is distracted by Hide at some point, so Seek can flank it or perhaps Tiamat will get flung OOTA.

In other news, I only just noticed Nary's sig is made up of razors...

:O You're right!  I've looked at that sig I don't know how many times... how did I miss that?  I thought it was just like hardening magma or something.

Also, voted for Gazea.

Tournament Archives / Re: No More Wedges Tournament Idea, Good idea?

This could be a good tournament idea but it needs some refinement.

First of all, the "if you kill your opponent you lose" rule has to go.  Otherwise you would get suicide bots and flamethrower spam.

There are better ways to enforce weapons that are not overly destructive.  For example, you could say "no weapons in close proximity to each other so that they hit at the same time".  So you can't have 2 razors right next to each other, like on a popup or shell spinner--they must be replaced by a single weapon such as a spike strip.  An exception could be made for weapons 40 kgs and heavier, which can't be replaced by a single heavier weapon as the heaviest weapon is the 70 kg hammer.  So a rammer with a bunch of 50 kg hammers in the front would be allowed.

Or you could limit spinning weapon weight.  Say, the total weight of spin motors plus anything attached to them (excluding drive and wheels) cannot exceed 250 kgs.  So you can use a 6-mag gearbox but you only get to put 100 kgs of weapons on it, and the dual Perm might as well be useless.

Tourney of Awesomeness was a good idea.  I would have entered it if it ever got into signups.

This, on the other hand... I'm afraid you're biting off more than you can chew.  (Pun not intended.)

As others pointed out, the tourney would take forever to complete, and because it also requires competitors to build new bots each round, you run the risk of people losing interest and procrastinating and holding up the whole tourney, like what happened with Brawl of the Builders.

LOL. I liked the forklift one.

That actually works in RA2.  :gawe:

I guess Havok secretly uses troll physics?

More people should put in the effort to give their bot a cool paint job.  Turns an otherwise plain wedge bot into a real eye-catcher.

You notice how The Troll's chassis doesn't seem to be anywhere?

:P

Also, just looked in your showcase and realized you did this first.

It looks like someone went in the arena after Naryar and Urjak's challenge and tried to reassemble the bots, but didn't know how they went and ended up with a hybrid of the two.

Hex plates don't attach to mags on DSL 2.1. D:

They do if you put on an ant sawblade first.  Just gotta sacrifice 4 kgs.

You might have better luck if the blades were more horizontal.  Right now bots will tend to sit on top of them and they won't do any damage.  Also, if the weapons spin inwards like I think they do, the normals are facing the wrong way.

Possibility: If you can't outweapon your opponent, try to hit their weak spot.  Maybe make a long undercutting HS designed to hit motors and wheels, like my Trial or Charybdis.

Mjorhmei did all right in BBEANS5, even against bots that severely outweapon it.  Maybe do something like that.

Or do something like Hammermill, my bot for my challenge with Sage.

The trick with sledgehammers is you need to get your opponent OOTA because you're not going to outweapon anything anytime soon.

Yep. "That's it! You're now a Lego wizard." I always wondered what that meant.

I hate the way it waits for ages before it plays that sound

first time i used it it gave me such a fright

There's your answer. :P

FB was in a sadistic mood when he made the txt file for the mega adapter.  The goal was to drive users to the brink of madness wondering what was causing all this lego wizard stuff in their bot lab and being unable to get rid of it.  Hence the innocent-sounding "cmp_attach.wav" sound file.

The sound effect itself is from an old game called Lego Creator for PC.  I'm not sure why he picked that quote specifically.

Were the blades facing the right way?

I mean they're pretty bad weapons, but they should do more damage than THAT.

You could have cut out like 3/4 of that match and it would have made no difference.  ;)

A rather good battle if you can sit through all that gridlock.

It's on the middle of page 10.

Well, I made a bot, and it's nearly worthless (hey, it's my first HW pure flipper I've ever attempted to build, what do you expect), but it sounds like there will be a lot of failbots in this tournament so with a bit of luck I could still do well.  ;)   Even if I don't, at least it looks rather cool if I do say so myself.

I think the Blue snapper is more of a game breaker

Agreed.  I half-wish that I never allowed it in the first BBEANS, as I think allowing it in BBEANS was what got it generally accepted as a stock part.  I remember when the Snapper II was considered a custom part.  I still don't like using it unless I really have to.

However, the other half of me likes the freedom of stacking it allows as much as the next guy.

I still want to do a stock tourney with no Snapper II's allowed sometime though.

is there any need for all those flippermakers just to make a flipper?

Although true, do you have any idea how ridiculous that statement sounds? :laughing

*must remember to put in memorable quotes thread once it's old enough*

And yeah, best thing you can do for your flipper is to give it 2 BSG's, or at least upgrade the one BSG to a JX if you feel like sacrificing some effectiveness for originality, which will either way require a rebuild to fit more batteries.

When they're AI'd, they work a lot better when they can drive straight both ways.  The difference isn't as noticeable with a human driver but it comes out when the AI takes control.  Case in point: 1.8 vs. All Or Nothing in BBEANS.  (I know 1.8 won more fights, but it got pretty lucky, while AON was rather unlucky.)

That bot looks awesome from that angle, but a few more angles would help as well.  I had to think for a bit to figure out what it was.

You're already very pressed for weight, so the only way you'll get a wedge on there is to sacrifice drive, which means you'll stand no chance against spinners.  If you do add a wedge you'll have to drop down to Astroflights (Slims will only save 10 kgs).  Then use a metal hinge with a long skirt on it.  Depending on what material the wedge is, you may have weight to strengthen the side skirts (which need strengthening).

And 8 light teeth should be enough for gut-ripping purposes.  It looks like the side skirts could help scoop bots on top of the weapon.

Can it drive straight in reverse?

This, I think, is the true mark of an effective rammer.

It does look good regardless; would be hard to outweapon.
